Hi, I'm post-stpm student 2009. I get to know that Aimst University offer Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) which I'm interested at. I am thinking to take Aimst as my backup if I don't get MBBS in local university this year. Reasons are due to Aimst is recognised by our Malaysia Government and the tuition fees are cheaper.
However, I don't really know anything about the Aimst. Any Aimst medic student here can give some feedbacks about mbbs at Aimst?
Your guidance will be appreciated. Thanks =D
Hi, I'm an AIMST-ter but I'm a dentistry student but I have many friends in the MBBS program. What do you want to know about AIMST ? If you want to know about the MBBS program only, i can tell you that my friends are complaining a lot about it.
There are 200 over students for the MBBS program this batch (2009/2010), and when they do their practicals, especially when they go to the disection hall to study the cadavers, it is really hard for them to learn anything as almost 50over students are in a group (we dentistry students have only 20++ students per group). Besides that, the lecture hall is always overcrowded, and I heard many of the good lecturers are leaving. And as usual, there are too many things to study and too many exams and too many people failing.
I don't know why you choose medicine, but if you're interested in any science-based program, I recommend you to take dentistry because our lecturers are quite good, and we have our own dental hospital (they don't have a medical hospital in aimst so medical students have to go to government hospital outside during their 3rd year). And we have sufficient high-tech dental chairs which are imported from Germany. Most important of all we have only 75 students(my batch). The facilities for BDS program is good, I think it's good too in MBBS just that there are not enough to accomodate all the 200++ students. And for the BDS program, we have visiting professors from UK during each modules of our course to teach us on specific topics, in which there are none for the MBBS program. Of course, most lecturers for the MBBS and BDS program are from India =)
Hi everyone ! I'm a student from AIMST University currently in the BDS (dentistry) program. I started this thread specifically for this year's SPM leavers who want to take up MBBS (Medicine), BDS(Dentistry) or BPharm (Pharmacy) degree.
Starting from my year (2008 ), those who have obtained 9As and above in SPM are automatically given the JPA scholarship and were sponsored to study the Foundation in Science in AIMST, and are now continued being sponsored to study the 3 degree programs mentioned above. Almost half of my classmates in BDS are JPA scholars. However, many of us did not know that JPA scholarship will be given until we were halfway into the foundation program. Hence, many of my friends whom did not study in AIMST at that time did not secure a scholarship to study for the foundation program and then the degree program.
Please note that I'm not advertising for AIMST. It's just that many of my friends did not know that JPA are sponsoring for students to study in AIMST for their pre-U and then for the whole degree course, so many of them whom wanted to become doctors or dentists or pharmacist but cannot afford the 200K++ fees, resorted to taking STPM and are trying their luck now to get into public universities with their preferred course. I do not wish to see this happen to other SPM leavers, as it's really saddening.
Starting from last year (2009), those with 9As are automatically JPA scholars prior to entering the Foundation in Science program, unlike our batch whom have to pay 10k and then only apply for JPA midway through our course and get refund from JPA months later.
So, for those whom have scored good results in SPM (2009 batch), as long as you are a JPA scholar(i dunno about the latest application procedure or rules, you have to find out yourselves), the good news is you can enroll into the Foundation in Science program and then depending on your foundation results, you can enter the medical course being sponsored ENTIRELY by JPA, except the accommodation fees which is 3k per term if i'm not mistaken (which you can cover using the RM770 per month given by JPA as "pocket money").
However, please beware that competition is increasingly tough, so please make sure that you are really interested in these medical courses and are capable of doing so, before you enroll. FYI, there are 600++ students now in last year's foundation program, and they'll be competing for the 300+ only places available for degree programs (200 in medic, 75 in dentistry and 50 in pharmacy). Obviously, half of them will be left out and have nowhere to go in the end =(
Also, please bear in mind that the foundation lecturers sucks, but the degree lecturers are real good and helpful (at least for BDS), so no worries =) At my time, the foundation course is really easy, but I heard from my juniors that it's really tough now, with many assignments, projects and homeworks.
By the way, the intake for this year's foundation program is April, June and July. The exact date can be found in their website www.aimst.edu.my.
Regarding why I recommend AIMST to SPM leavers and not to STPM leavers or other pre-U, it's because AIMST give priority to their own foundation students when applying for the degree program. And as I said, there are too many foundation students and too few places available for degree, so it's logical to think that "outsiders" stand no chance to compete for the seats, especially for BDS. It's become a trend to study BDS (I dunno why), and out of the 75 seats in my batch, there are only around 5 lucky students who are not from the foundation course.
If you have any other questions regarding AIMST, I'll be pleased to help =) Good Luck !
The overall conditions in AIMST :
Food + Accommodation - Cheapest rate at Rm 450 per month (4/room, food included). The food doesn't really taste good, but it's improving now. They serve chicken chop or fish and chips every thursday ! And occasionally they serve wantan mee, koay tiao soup, lam mee, loh me, chicken rice etc prepared by hawkers outside =)
Campus - very grand, with many nice buildings, and there is a sports complex which houses an olympic size swimming pool, badminton court, squash and tennis court, a tiny tiny gym, basketball court and also a running track with a football field in the middle. The only flaw is that the sports complex is very very far away from our hostels, especially the boys' hostel, and walking there is an exercise which is more than enough XD and you have to pay a few ringgits to use the sports facilities, except the gym.
Hostel : There are 4/room (RM450), 3/room(RM500), 2/room(RM550) and 1/room (RM600) hostels. But mostly foundation students are given the 4/room ones and are NOT allowed to choose their roomates, ie, they pick who's staying with who RANDOMLY. The other rooms are reserved for degree students, and the 1/room ones are air-conditioned, which are reserved for international students or higher degree students only. BOO. Oh ya, occasionally you'll get visits from various kinds of insects into your room (bathroom, living room, bedroom, toilets included). And the amount and size of these insects could really scare the wits out of new students heh...
Lecture halls/classrooms : All are fully air-conditioned. And the foundation students use the lecture hall in the dentistry building while we dental students are thrown into small classrooms =.="
Lecturers : Foundation lecturers really are not that good, but the degree lecturers are really good. I seldom fall asleep during lectures in my degree course, and the anatomy lecturers are among the best of all subjects. Many of these lecturers are from India, and I heard from my MBBS friend that IMU and other singapore universities wanted to employ some of these lecturers, but they chose AIMST because of its majority indian management.
I can't think of anything else right now. You are welcomed to ask =)

I am planning to enroll in AIMST for my foundation in science. But I can't seem to make up my mind whether to choose dentistry or medicine after foundation. I've been trying to find out which of these two will have more job oppurtunities in the future. I read from one of the website that doctors will get a starting pay of RM 6000 after completing housemanship. Are dentists the same?

Jace, is there any post-stpm student get MBBS? actually im jpa scholar pidn 2008 for form 6 then i can choose to continue my degree at aimst and will be sponsored by jpa~i can say tat medic is my dream. but im quite worry im not accepted by aimst as i know the foundation students are crowded.
yhui18 : the intake for the foundation program is on april, june and july, so you don't really have to rush. What do you mean by alternative? If you wan medical courses, you can choose among IMU, Manipal, PMC, PIDC, Mahsa or Masterskill and I think there's a new medical college called ACMS if i'm not mistaken.
Shelly : You don't have to make up your mind now until you finish your foundation program. Only then you're able to apply for whatever degree courses you prefer.
uuyw : sorry, i can't answer your question as i'm a dentistry student. But from what I heard from my friend is that there are a lot of assignments and the course is quite tough. If you're not that into chemistry, it's gonna be tough.
JYong : I think i answered you in msn =)

Hi! Do we have to go for an interview in order to get into the degree programme?
May I know whether there is bond if we get the jpa sponsor for dentistry, mbbs and pharmacy courses?

May I know whether there is bond if we get the jpa sponsor for dentistry, mbbs and pharmacy courses? There will be bond if you receive JPA scholarship, regardless of local or overseas. Bond period is 10 years for medicine and dentistry, 6 years for pharmacy.

Is MBBS course as stressful as ppl say it is?
Hi! Do we have to go for an interview in order to get into the degree programme?

As far as I know, there's no interview to get into the degree program. When you say bond, you mean bond with AIMST or the government? You have a 10 year bond with the government if you get jpa for MBBS and BDS. Pharmacy the bond should be shorter, not sure though. You have to check with JPA. With AIMST, no.
Is MBBS course as stressful as ppl say it is?
VERY....many of the MBBS students look really pale whenever we see them, and they've got lot of acne due to stress :P Anyway, it depends on your interest. If you take MBBS just to please your parents or any other reasons without having any interest in it, you're gonna have a hard time then...

starting last yr those who came in for the foundation course are already jpa scholars,ie you have to apply for jpa BEFORE you enter AIMST. I think if you score 9As and above you're guaranteed to get the jpa scholarship (dalam negara only, not overseas jpa).
if you go for matrix or stpm 1st, you're still eligible to apply for degree programmes in aimst, but there's no guarantee you'll get a place because they give priority to the foundation students. after the foudnation students have fill in the places then only they open it to "outsiders".

there's no wifi in the campus, except in the cafeteria, and its really slow. you have to use LAN cable in ur room, and only 1 person in the room can use it at one time. You can wear formal clothes if you like. Tshirt and jeans is ok, but no sexy clothes or shorts or short skirts. it's more conservative over here in aimst :wink
how much is the BDS programme and what is the value of loan that ptptn gives?

really?hahahha
whats the wink for
apparently there are rumours going around the sungai petani area that aimst students are known to be a bit "WILD"
LATEST UPDATE : My friend's friend went to AIMST to inquire about the degree courses and came back with a shocking news....
AIMST has increased the tuition fee for the MBBS and BDS Programme !!!!!!
MBBS : From 220,000 to 360,000 (OMG !!!)
BDS : From 210,000 to 250,000
And there are rumours saying that the previous april batch foundation students whom just finished their course and got their results, there are 145 of them applying for the BDS programme which has only 100 seats available.
And rumour said that this coming foundation programme has over 1000 applications...i'm not sure whether it's this coming april intake or the 3 intakes this year. Whichever it is, it's still a huge number =.="
wat????????????????????? 360k??????????? how is dat possible??????i tot the purpose of establishing aimst is to help needy students?during the edu fair, the representative said they might increase by 30 or 40k only. :(

hah..I think that is appropriate given the other similar standard med schools cost about the same in malaysia-IMU and Melaka Manipal.
Plus Aimst has better facilities than IMU and MMMC and these three unis are recognized only in malaysia..so what's so great about the former when compared to the other two?

hi~if u are post-spm 2009, u can refer to jpa scholarship PIDN 2010 at the following link:
http://www.recom.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10086
Regarding the JPA scholarship 2 study in AIMST, you have to refer to the JPA's policies on how to apply because you have to apply the JPA scholarship (shud be PIDN) under JPA, and not AIMST....

Hi, Jace, hoping for some clarifications here, you said that Foundation students will be automatically given the JPA scholarship for 9As and above right? How bout if I applied for PILN? From what I heard, students who failed to secure the PILN will be given PIDN instead, hoping for some help here. I tried opening the AIMST website several times but it keep telling me service unavailable..
During my year (2008), we applied for PILN first. The PIDN came automatically during june or july, to all whom have scored 9As and above for their SPM. Actually I said automatically because JPA produced a list of JPA scholars to AIMST (without them applying for it or anything), and those who are in the list are then required to apply for the PIDN, just that there's no interview but only submitting of forms and documents. One of my friend who's got PILN even found her name in the PIDN list...
However, I heard from one of my friends who is a SPM leaver that now even for the PIDN you have to undergo the application and interviewing process, just like the PILN. This you definitely have to check with JPA because AIMST is only a university listed in the JPA-PIDN program list, they have nothing to do with the PIDN policies or application. You have to apply from the JPA department =)

Previously,if im not mistaken,PIDN will be given automatically if you failed to get PILN but u met their requirements.
This year, there is an option to choose either you wan to apply PILN or PIDN.I applied for PIDN,same as PILN,I had undergo interview too.
I'm quite confused about your info, could you pls explain further? As far as I know,JPA will not automatically offer you a scholarship. Please correct me if Im wrong.
Furthermore,do you sure that the fees will increase?Last month I met their staff in education fair but they didn't mention it at all.:notrust
hey, im new here. I have some questions to ask.
regarding on the hostel, if there is 4 person per room, is it a double decker bed or just a single bed? and everyone will be provided with study desk and cupboard?
wi-fi isnt provided inside the hostel means we have to buy a broadband?
May i ask the seniors. Since we will be staying in the hostel, do we have to bring things such as electric kettle ourselves or theres a dispenser inside the hostel? things like pillow will change as soon as theres a new batch of student coming in or we have to take care of those thgs ourselves?

Latest fees for MBBS is RM260,550 and for BDS is RM260,650.
However, the MBBS program is still the cheapest in M'sia among the institutes which are already recognised by MMC.
which institutions are recognised by MMC?What about Cyberjaya and UCSI?

However, medical school conducted in m'sia will gain recognition by MMC normally after the graduation of pioneer batch. So, recognition won't not be a problem if u study in M'sia.

well 2 years ago the PIDN could be regarded as "automatic" because 1 or 2 months after we enter the foundation programme in aimst, the university came out with a list of those who were selected for the jpa scholarship without them applying for the PIDN prior to that. Then only they submit their documents and all that plus sign the agreement. At that time this PIDN just started and there were alot of confusions still, so maybe what occured las time is different from now...And yes, the fees had increased, you can check it with the aimst staff =)

it's a single bed, 4 beds in a room, each of you will hav a study desk and a cupboard. You can buy a broadband if you want, because for the 4 per room hostel, there's only 1 internet port, that means only 1 of you can use the internet at tht time. Or you can buy a wireless router =)
you have to bring practically everything because daily appliances are not provided, including pillows, kettles, and blah blah blah...

Hi there. Just got to see this thread. Dropping to say that I'm currently studying MBBS in AIMST, batch 15 (Aug 2009 intake). Therefore, I can also help in answering some of your queries.
@<hidden> Kirii : regarding the fees, i think what's on the website is the latest one. if still doubt, do call up the marketing department.
and replying to one of the questions asked by a recommer in one of the previous pages on whether is it really stressful studying medicine, IT IS NOT. it all boils down to your study style and how you manage your time. you may have heard many medical students or other people saying that studying medicine has no life (eg. sleeping 2am waking up 5am because need to study, all the time facing books, no time to hang out etc). That is all rubbish. i can tell you that my bunch of friends and i here DO ENJOY ALMOST everyday. be it in class, during meals, during tea time, we even go for frequent exercise (frisbee, badminton, ping pong, squash), we even have cool clubs (D'Glitz - another version of Glee). so we are just any other bunch of students who enjoy our course and our life too. any other courses are also stressful, just how you can handle it and make it not stressful. :)

2)How many foundation,a level, stpm students in your batch?

ok....if im not mistaken, according to the brochure,BBB is enough to enter its MBBS?
however, did u face any difficulties when applying to aimst?
and, what is their results for those from foundation?
they met the minimum entry requirement or score straight As?

My time, it was 3 B+ minimum requirement.
No difficulties, just that they might give priority to the AIMST foundation students.
Those from foundation, I dont know about the grade but they have to obtain minimum 215 out of 300 to qualify for MBBS. This all I refer back to when I first entered in August 2009. Now I dont know has the thing change or not.

Erm, can i choose for 2person per room instead of 4person per room for my first year of foundation there?
And, when does the class start? During commencement date? or intake date?
joyce_limyp
23-05-2010, 11:17 PM
@<hidden> Desmond : I don't think 1st year you're allowed to do. You should register for 4 per room 1st, then later maybe you can write in to apply with solid reasons. They might consider giving to you. Regarding when the class starts, if Im not mistaken, they will :
1. registration day
2. orientation day
then right after the orientation day, which means the following week itself classes will start immediately. do not worry about the class, take it easy. you have yet to register and be there, why worry when the class starts?

joyce_limyp
25-05-2010, 05:48 PM
@<hidden> ecq : Do not worry. It will not be too crowded. The lecture hall can accomodate up to 300students and more.
@<hidden> Desmond : yes, can wear jeans, but must be dark coloured, cannot be faded or tattered or torn or stylish. just a normal and simple one.
joyce limyp: are u a senior here? so we still dont gt to choose our friend as our roomate?
Desmond
25-05-2010, 06:39 PM
hmm, can wear T-shirts? @<hidden>,@<hidden> i heard some senior say T-shirt is not allowed. THey say must wear formal clothes. Eg. Long sleeve + tie + black trousers. Is it true?
Desmond
26-05-2010, 10:20 AM
Besides that, how is the orientation there? Is it terrible? Haha...
And, do the hostel provide pillows?
joyce_limyp
26-05-2010, 08:18 PM
@<hidden> ecq : yes, im a senior here. regarding room things, im not too sure because ure foundation means less privilege, cant choose this, cant choose that. so im not certain about this.
@<hidden> Desmond : guys need to wear formal to class, shirt + tie + long pants. pillow better bring your own. some rooms got pillows some room none. i brought my own. i had to be pillow-less for a week because my room no extra. please put all your questions into a post will be fine. thank you.
Desmond
26-05-2010, 08:51 PM
Hmm, thankyou for the infos. How about the blanket? Do we need to bring our own too? By the way, long pants do include jeans? =P and shoes must be the working shoes?
joyce_limyp
29-05-2010, 09:17 AM
Blanket bring your own. I already reply you regarding jeans on earlier post, please look back. Shoes is better to be working shoes though sports shoe also ok, but it will look weird with your formal attire.

Hey,
Il be joining in for the Foundation in Biological Science leading to a MBBS Degree in AIMST for the July 2010 Intake.
Im a SPM 2008 student, thus am i still eligible for the AIMST SPM Excellence Award? I got 10A'S & 1B3.
Besides, thus anyone have any idea what is the first payment like?
How much do i need to pay during registration?
Must i pay the lump sum of RM 450X12 or do i pay it monthly?
The RM 8550 is it broken down to be paid in tri-semesters?
Thanks alot!
Looking forward to meeting up with some cool coursemates!
Yeah!
Cheers.

Er, i can only answer you that you need to pay RM100 processing fee during registration. And, you will need to pay RM7230 which includes yuran and school fee for the first semester if you're selected. Hope that helps =X
can we wear t-shirt for classes? the 'dress code' state that t-shirts not allowed. but during the edu-fair, they told me t-shirts are ok..and if t-shirts are allowed, must it have collar? thnx in advanced.

Jace,
hi,you've mentioned that if anyone gets 9A's and above will get JPA straight away in Aimst?? The 9A's u mentioned ,is it include A- and A?? Or just A+ only?? :) Sorry for the late post here.
uuyw : if you're a male, t-shirt is literally not allowed especially if you're taking the foundation course. if u're a female then it's ok to wear t-shirt(normal tee without collar) n jeans or skirt...
xiana: las time it was A- and A+. but i heard they changed the system again, and some juniors told me dis jpa thingy was abolished bcz the government does not have so much money anymr =S i dunno, u'd better check with the jpa officers (n they're not very friendly usually LOL)
