Dear all,
I am a JPA scholar bound for UK in 2011 to do my law degree. Recently, there has been news from a couple of classmates in my A Level class that the allowance in UK has been reduced to 700 pounds per month regardless of the location of the university.:cry Those aiming for UOL is definitely dead meat. Has anyone received such news? I personally have got no letter or circular from JPA.
What are your views? Or if you have any info feel free to share.

I dont think that's true.It is still 950 pounds a month in london ( I have two cousins here under jpa as well.It is still insufficient given that they are in UCL and LSE respectively but..i guess its doable, their parents still send them about 500 quids a month each.
the pound is also very low now..so JPA is saving a lot compared to sending students to other countries.for example the Allowance in Poland is 700-800 euros if im not mistaken.(I could be wrong though because Im not privy to such information and personally do not have any friends who are studying in these countries.)

It would be rather unfair all the scholars have similar allowance. Living expenses is different depending on the location. Hopefully JPA do not take such measures.

thats true.but you see..if someone goes to queen mary or st george's living expenses there are much lower than edinburgh or glasgow or even bristol..so..it doesnt make sense that people in these unis benefit from the 950 allowance. It really depends which zone u are at at in London..there are 6 zones FYI.
well..you can always opt for the law schools outside london. They are pretty decent too..like nottingham, bristol.

I am applying for UCAS in a couple of months time. Personally I have listed down a couple of unis. I would be giving a shot at Oxbridge and from my research, Oxford is the 2nd most expensive place to live in UK after London. I am also putting my hopes on Queen Mary and King's College (yet to decide on another 2).
Based on the Queen Mary officer which visited my college last week, the accommodation in campus is around 118 pounds per week which gives a balance of 228 pounds left assuming the you pay for 4 weeks of accommodation in a month and you receive 700 pounds allowance per month. 228 pounds could be more than sufficient if you cook but most accommodation do not allow you to do so.
From my senior's experience in LSE, accommodation cost up to 700-800 pounds a month. With the new allowance, its probably dead end for the scholars especially one doing Law (like me) which requires much studying and reading. Besides, we are not allowed to work anyway.
I think JPA should think of that.

u r allowed t o work as per jpa's new policies
228 per mth is enough for a month if you manage it well.
800 a mth for lse's accomodation?must be the most expensive one.
how sure are you this is going to be changed?
if u are nt allowed to cook it must be a catered hall.never heard of halls that dont provide cooking facilities as well as not being a catered hall

It's still 950 for me. As of now, there is no official news whatsoever, so unless I get a letter, I'm going to continue assuming that it's only a rumour. =P
There were also rumours last year that apparently they were going to increase our allowance, and nothing happened, so take these rumours with a pinch of salt.

I just went through my agreement last week after receiving them back from JPA. It is still stated as Pelajar TIDAK dibenarkan berkerja sepanjang tempoh pengajian sama ada bergaji ataupun tidak. Even volunteer job is actually not allowed.:oh

Just to digress a bit. In my place (US), the students work although JPA said no because the allowance is not enough sometimes. The cost of living in the residence hall is higher than the allowance given. Hence, JPA also tutup mata to such cases.
