hello people,
i m having some problem with my Compaq Armada M700 laptop.
My problem is this. My laptop just hang suddenly while i m using it and after it hanged, no response at all from the keyboard and mouse and i have no choice but to force shut down it. Then sometime, it will just shut down itself without any warning. There's a small beep sound before it shut down itself automatically.
I thought my laptop might be infected with virus but my laptop just hanged while i was running the virus scan. So I have no idea if there's a virus hiding somewhere in my laptop.
Somehow I suspect it's some hardware failure. I forgot to switch it off when I went to sleep one night but then I did set my hibernation on after idle for 45 minutes or so.
I had contacted the compaq online support but I don't think I will get any response soon. I am thinking maybe someone has the similar problem might wanna share the experience? Or maybe the computer experts around recom might be able to tell me what's wrong or what to do? At least I can have some sense of what's going wrong with my laptop and won't be conned when I sent for repair later and have to spend big bucks for that.
anyway, any recommers knows of any good computer shop to go for repairing in melaka?

I leave my Compaq 1075 running 24/7 and no problems yet.
I suggest u send it to the Compaq folks if you are still under warranty. They have great service. Don't know about in Malaysia but in Germany, my fren with the same model as mine got his whole m/b changed in 3 days with no extra charge. They even came and picked his laptop up.
I think it's a hardware failure. Might be ur cooling system. Try checking if the fan suddenly runs at high rpm before it shuts down. Get a diagnostic software which supports the board. (don't ask me, I don't know about any software which supports laptop boards except for the tools that came with ur laptop from the manufacturer). Some boards show the temp of the CPU. Test with ur hands by feeling the keyboard and the bottom of your laptop. If it's REALLY hot, it's definitely hardware failure. Most likely only the fan. It's a precaution measure of the board to shut down if it runs too hot so that it won't harm ur Processor. Cheaper to change fan than Processor.
Try this test. put ur laptop on your lap and see if you can stand the heat. If it's too hot to even put on your lap, then u have a problem. After all, it's a laptop ain't it?

wwhong, as my father is an EE and is working with computers - PC, laptops, servers, main frames etc. etc., I have consulted him (he has seen your post) and he has given the following comments:
Compaq Armada M700 laptop usually comes with a recovery CD disk. When you bought the laptop, did the laptop come along with a recovery CD disk?
He said that one possible cause could be virus. If you have the recovery CD disk and if the data is not important, just put the CD in and reboot with the CD to recover the system and reformat the hard disk.
However, be warned that you will lose all your data on the disk.
If after doing this and if the laptop still behaves in the same manner, then it is hardware problem (which he thinks is quite unlikely)
He agrees with kevinlym that the cooling system could be a possible cause.
Hope this helps.

Can you please post your system specs(processor/RAM/OS..etc)?
FYI, if you are using an AMD laptop, it could be time for the phase change material between your heatsink and processor to be replaced. Also, if you are running an AMD laptop, there was an issue with Windows XP and the Powernow! drivers. Please download the new drivers. Check your chipset. if is is a VIA chipset, you might also want to download the VIA 4-in-1 drivers.
Good Luck!

Thanks for that Steppe! say thanks to your dad too.
about the spec of the laptop, i have to go check it out before i can post here. oh man i couldn't even remember my own laptop's spec.
anyway, this is a second hand laptop and the previous owner lost the recovery cd.
i din bring back my win xp cd. so i guess, the best thing i can do is to send to a computer shop to check it out.
I will try out what kelvinlym suggested (hope my lap won;t get burned)
anyway, i will post it here what's actually wrong after i send for check out so that u guys can avoid or at least know what's going wrong if u have the same problem next time.
Appreciate your help, guys.

Yep.. hard-locks are one of the classic symptoms of over-heating or impending hardware failure. If you know your hardware specs (looks like you don't :(), you might want to find out what's the temperature of the CPU.
It might be a virus, but that's pretty unlikely too since not many (VERY few) viruses causes hard-locks, and if you have an updated anti-virus software running then the possibilities are pretty slim.
How long have you been using this laptop? Do a google on memtest86 , install and run it, and see if it reports any errors. A single error is an error too many.
The best way is still to let Compaq settle this for you assuming it's still under warranty. Remember to backup your stuff first!
