Some questions here...I don't know how to style these clothes that I have, so I kept them stored for now...hope that someone can help=)

1)I have a long-sleeved yellow shirt with ruffles on the front...it's pretty but also looks too much like office wear. How can I wear it in a way that it's more youthful-looking?

2)How do I pair very long skirts with tops? I don't really fancy them, but I have bought a few on occasion for special events. Can I incorporate them into semi-formal use as well, so that it looks good, and not just wear them once a year?

3)I have a long-sleeved shiny shirt that my family member bought for me on sale (I didn't ask for it). I don't really fancy it, so I only dare wear it to formal events. How do I style this?

PS: If all you want to reply me is "go search googlelah" then don't bother replying...I do searches also but this is a pretty specific question...unless it's a site recommendation. I was hoping for some ReCommer's personal opinion:)

Thanks a million!

Hey there, maybe you can upload some pictures of your clothes? It is much easier to give suggestions that way!

I'm working on it...Will upload as soon as I can. Anyway here's a general description of the clothes I mentioned...

1) The yellow shirt is long sleeved, and the collar area has some white ruffle patterns which are quite fluffy and extend to the chest level, but follow the collar shape.

2) I have a long brown skirt, the material is velvet-like and has a belt that comes with it. It's wide-pleated. Another one is a floral skirt made from thinner material and has some pleats at the end. Blue color. The third one is plain maroon(off-red), slightly flared with lace details at the edge, the fourth one is a blue denim skirt at 3/4 length and has wide pleats at the bottom half. (#4 is my favorite of them all=))

I also have two knee-length narrow-pleated skirts: one is plain white , and another is made with sari cloth(pattern is similar to batik motifs)...

3)The shiny shirt is 3/4 sleeved and pink in color. It's quite plain...

Thanks! :amuse

The easiest way to "dress down" office-wear tops is to pair it with jeans, and maybe some strappy sandals or ballerina pumps.

Might pop by later to advise on the other clothes that you have, because they seem like a toughie and might take a bit of good thinking before deciding on a direction you should take. XD

1. my friend has a shirt just like that.. try pairing it with a high waist skirt ( black if u wna play safe )

2. have u ever tried turning your skirts into dresses? instead of wearing them as long skirts, turn it into a bare back dress and fit a waist belt into it.. the effect, given the right sort of material is great ! :)

3. when you say shiny, exactly what material are you refering to. shiny as in disco shiny or silk-like ?

Thanks for all the ideas so far!

(After stashing through a really full wardrobe)I found the clothes I mentioned...not all of them but most:) here they are:

(the pictures are clickable thumbnails)

The yellow shirt:

The skirts(cross-reference them with my general description for matches). PS the longer skirts that I described look like knee-length but because I'm short when I wear it it looks long on me...
http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy71/ebii_shyn/th_clothes006.jpg (http://s779.photobucket.com/albums/yy71/ebii_shyn/?action=view&current=clothes006.jpg)http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy71/ebii_shyn/th_clothes005.jpg (http://s779.photobucket.com/albums/yy71/ebii_shyn/?action=view&current=clothes005.jpg)http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy71/ebii_shyn/th_clothes007.jpg (http://s779.photobucket.com/albums/yy71/ebii_shyn/?action=view&current=clothes007.jpg)http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy71/ebii_shyn/th_clothes008.jpg (http://s779.photobucket.com/albums/yy71/ebii_shyn/?action=view&current=clothes008.jpg)

And the shiny shirt...(the material is a little coarse but shiny, not silk-like)

I have to say, you are sooo cute to post about things like this here. :)
Hmm... I would like the yellow one with the plain colour skirt.

*cough* I don't have a wonderful sense of fashion though. :))

Aww...you're saying that I'm cute? *blush* Or do you mean my clothes collection? Or even better, both?....(wonders)

I needed genuine advice ok...buit also after I joined ReCom I wondered if there was anyone around that can help me with something unrelated to education of any sort...so I was sort of 'gauging Recom's usefulness' in a way by posting about this...:amuse

FYI people I kept those clothes in storage and dare not wear them because don't know how to style them at first...interesting ideas that you all gave. thanks a lot! :wink BTW if I wear the yellow shirt with a no sleeved, short denim jacket will it look OK? (I have no occasion to try this outfit yet, and based on my bad sense of fashion I can' really say)

PS: When I posted, "Guys what do you think" in my previous post 3 guys almost immediately replied to this thread... Restless, alter_ego and nickvl you 3 are guys right? (sorry if i got that wrong)word taken bulat-bulat.:amuse

hahaha.. celine, i think its safe to say that a lot of ppl get mixed up over fellow recommer's genders so no biggie :D funny though :P hey.. do you have something in white like a office-ish kind of blouse or even a singlet ? i think it can work well with the 'ethnic' skirts.. i mean, its better to pick a single colour ( light colour ) top to mesh with the floral print skirt.. so it kinda looks like the focus is on the skirt.. ermm, how do i say this ? okay.. erm in outfits, you find a focus point where you unleash your creativity ;) then the others is just to well.. blend the outfit in ? not sure if im getting the right message through though :P ahahaha.. i hope you get it.. but its my opinion larr. :) but the skirt with the belt is soo cute ! :D

it's not good to match the yellow shirt with the sleeveless denim jacket because i just want to keep it simple. emm, the yellow shirt can be matched with mini skirt so not whole part of ur body is covered up. I also agree that plain feminine blouse( white/milk) goes with the floral skirt.

Yay me! :wink Not only am I bumping quite a number of old threads, I'm pioneering a new kind of thread as well...(starts boasting about being perasan :wink kidding)

I like a lot of the ideas here...you guys have great fashion sense(that I so don't have...I ask people how I look before appearing with anything other than T-shirt and jeans in public)lol...

Here's an interesting fact: the second skirt from the left can't be bought anywhere. The confession is: My grandmother sewn that for me some years back:)

Any ideas on the pink shirt? To me it looks auntyish a little...how do I look younger in that?

does the pink shirt has buttons?
if so, I guess can use as sweater...

aww.. thats a family treasure you've got there then ! :)
erm.. tight jeans can work with anything.. so if you cant find anything else to go with the pink top.. like what glassy said, GO WITH JEANS !!

The pink shirt doesn't have buttons...

I always wear jeans to play safe most of the time...but I love jeans! yeah they go with just about anything!:amuse

The skirt that my grandmother sew...that's one of the rare times where she sews for me nowadays. She used to sew most of my childhood dresses, the puffy-sleeved layered kind, but when I became a teenager I asked her to stop sewing dresses...so now it's skirts, or repairing my clothes collection...I sound so ungrateful:oh

well u could match the yellow fluffy collared shirt with a fluffy white mini skirt. dont have to be too fluffy, a little lacey maybe. tug it in and add a belt, a dark brown would do nicely. roll up the sleeves, make it a three quarter sleeve shirt. and for the skirts, any kind of body hugging singlet would do, preferably white, matches with anything. if too exposed, match it with a long cardigan, the colour that matches the skirts or black. black matches with everything and anything.
for the pink blouse..no idea yet. probably roll up the sleeves and wear it with a skinny jeans?

This came a little late, but thanks for all your helpful suggestions girls (and guys)!

Just one thing...I don't wear miniskirts, or short skirts without leggings..just don't fancy guys "noticing" me in the flirty kind of way when I used to wear one(which wasn't even mini, just about few cm above the knee!)...my legs are not very shapely also...so my skirts are knee-length...

Once again, thank you to all fashionistas who have helped in this thread:laugh
