I was reading master of none's suggestion to royston to make software under recom's name. hehehe...I think it's a great idea. However, i'm have no ideas right now.

I think the first step to make software is to to think of a problem. A problem could be something that is too hard to do, too tedious, or just takes too long to do manually. Once we have identified a problem, then it would be easy to produce programs to solve them.

So in this forum, I hope we could suggest problems that our master programmers can tackle.

THis is another easy way to make Recom more tangible.

Oh Kevin, you are really into it.... hahah...!!

I have no problem to build a program but I have 2 concerns:

1. I may not be the best person to develop a program as my knowledge is so trivial, furthermore, the programs that I used to work on are those utilized by machine, not really usable in normal mode.

2. I am working currently, if due to my workload and the program been delayed, this is not I wish to happen as well.

Why don't we try to come out a problem, every member who has the interest may have a try, sort-of a competition. The period of completion may be 1 week or so... how is it?

Syamsul, the same concept that can be applied in the Mandarin Learning section. I will think of a way to come out some interesting competition so that all the members can take part to join the fun, meanwhile, learn up something new...

How?

By the way... one thing I feel quite funny, Syamsul... what triggerred your mind that "royston" should be someone lead these software development job? hahahaha....!!! :P

I just came up with a project. This one is for chen chow.

We know he spends time to get news from all these different sources. How about we write a program that crawls these news sites and gets the headlines for the day from each of these sites. It could be more than just the headlines. If chen chow can give some idea on how he does it, we could perhaps work out some algorithm to automate this process. It may not be as good as his selections, but it will help ease his burden by maybe preparing a smaller pool of news articles he has to sieve through.

I think chen chow will probably have some idea how to do this too, based on this IT course that he's taking :)

Anyone up for the challenge?

Hey, quite obvious, you work for Intel and you said u have the experience from in C++ and assembly, isn't it obvious ;-)

anyway, littlebigone, I'm really interested. I think we can sort of find the ways how things can update once in a while, like google news
http://news.google.com
(scroll all the way to the bottom and it says, computer program select the news)

we need more idea in designing this stuff.

haha... brother... that's just for fun only. i like challenging stuff. the program that i have submitted to the creative corner, i used up almost 3 months to finish it... as u can see how poor my programming skills is... :P

anyway, i wish to put in my effort to make recom improve. anything u need help, just count on me ...

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're saying here. Does google have a computer selected news section ?

Have you guys heard about "newsfeed"? I think this program you guys are planning on will be much much easier if we just take advantages of newsfeed that many news website provide .. that way the program does not have to waste time looking for headlines, filtering and extracting them for our since it can just get the headlines from the newsfeed ...

it;s okay if we want just headlines...but I;m thinking more of a data mining thing, where we can use some probabilistic algorithm to gather a set of news item that may satisfy our needs. For example, maybe articles with the words students, or articles with the words "vision 2020"

Sometimes, these news items are not just in the headlines.

Alright, I found the newsfeed thing..
they use the XML parser engine, RSS

http://www.mnot.net/rss/tutorial/

we're almost there.

Wow! This is amazing! I am really 110% supportive in this project under Recom's name... sounds brilliantly attractive to me! :)

Maybe someone who has taken a course in Data Mining can chip in to help? :D

Way to go guys!!

if you want to find articles with words "vision 2020", y not use google?

How about asking Fall 2003, 15-211 students in CMU?
They had just completed their very own google assignment recently.
It can be optimized to meet ReCom's needs.

As far as I know, Han Chun (hanl@<hidden>), Eujern (eujernl@<hidden>), and Yong Khong (ykc@<hidden>) have done it.
I am sure they would be glad to contribute their codes and knowledge.

yeah, great idea! hui lin, bring em in!

littlebigone, you have done something similar too right? So, you could be of great help too!
