RTM is undergoing a tremendous improvization effort and I have seen RTM's website . http://www.rtm.net.my/english/] RTM [/url] . And it is pretty good~!
May be those who are back home could update us on how the improvement goes?
And about the "infotainment" tagline which DBP has made a number of announcements to oppose it. What do you guys think about that?

It's not so much about the issue of the Malay language absorbing too many English words nowadays, or any kind of protectionism for the national language. I think it's more about when there are enough Malay words in the kamus to describe the same thing, and yet many people still choose an English-sounding word for it.
The DBP is pissed at the "-tainmen" part of the word, that comes from "entertainment"; an English word; whereas there is a perfectly sensible and common word in Malay for the same thing -- "hiburan", or perhaps even "ria", which DBP proposes.
Yeah, we all know that RTM wants to jazz its public image up in the face of stiff competition from the other more lively new TV station, making it look like it's hip, swanky and cool with the times, and well, using that word "infotainmen" somewhat achieves that effect.
In any case, both the DBP and the RTM have the rights to fight for what they think is right for their organization. RTM for their ratings, and DBP for their mandate in promoting the standard Malay tongue.

First basic rule of any language - if you use the language, use it properly. Combining words with words of another language (even a part of it) just isn't the way.

Kadir is ridiculous. Technical term he said! He should have stayed in the tourism department I say!
If RTM were a French institute, it wouldn't have survive the French linguist assault.

regardless of what you guys say, at least they have a live stream from the new website which is cool. Hope they don't stop the stream when F1 starts. :D

I dont think the word "infotainmen" makes me feel it's hip, swanky and cool with the current trend. To me, it's an insult to our Malay Language which has been going through an immense assimilation with English Language over the years back. In fact, IMO our society likes to use English in their daily conversation in Malay Language and then in their writing too that DBP has to accept some of these Malay translated English due to popularity. Someone may say this is acceptable since that Malay Language originates from other languages from the beginning and the influence of English in Malay language is some sort of language evolution. But I see this evolution as another kind of globalisation that are eating up the originality of Malay Language.

i think it's not at 10 anymore right? that's why they call it berita dunia. it used to be dunia jam 10. yeah, i like it. farith is so much passion in reading news. :P
and that might be the only rtm news in which u wont hear anything about "kemiskinan di kelantan (and previously terengganu too)".

In fact, the catch line "infotainment" is not a mixture of Malay and English language. It is completely in English - i.e. Information + Entertainment .
To those who wish to download patriotic songs to listen on your own, RTM site (www.rtm.net.my) has a number of patriotic songs available.

yup, but still, they are using an English word and two Malay words in one sentence.
Now, Kadir once said artists should not mix English and Malay in their lyrics. But I guess RTM is not an artist...

did he? i think all of us must have listen it wrongly... or the media has reported it wrongly.... hehe
i don't think RTM is any better (after watching(wasting) several days, checking what it has to offer)... besides the so-called cool advertisement abt the new tagline, there's nothing new abt it...

I checked out the rtm website and i can sometimes get streams to watch tv but sometimes more often than not i get a messgae saying the server can server no more streams which is frustrating. Its pretty cool though. I wish all the malaysian stations had the same streaming tv website. well done rtm for bringing back this feature which they previously had for tv1 some years months ago.

hmm... i don't think RTM is that bad.
a lot of my friends don't like RTM, said RTM TV and Radio channels suck. but when asked, they all admit that they've never even watched or listened to RTM programs. heh, like a philosopher diagnosing a leukemic mutt.
Do you know that RTM contributes a lot towards Malaysian entertainment industry? How do you think artists like Sheila Majid and Siti Nurhaliza got famous?
RTM TV shows may not be as good as what you can get from TV3 and all other privately owned TV stations. But I think you have to consider their target group as well. To some people, RTM is awesome. their Hiburan Minggu Ini, Bintang RTM and Forum Perdana has considerably high ratings. and there's this really funny program where people call in and sing karaoke. i really like it. That's just for TV1. TV2 is so much better. I guess it all depends on the kind of programs that you prefer. I like the movies that they show on TV2. and ER. and the chinese shows. etc. etc. And then there's the full coverage of events like Perhimpunan UMNO, SEA Games and the Olympics.
Also, you have to consider the fact that sometimes, RTM just don't have a choice when it comes to the kind of programs they can air on their channels. They are government-owned TV/Radio stations. If not them, who else are going to support all those crappy programs that Malaysian companies produce? they have to do whatever the Kementerian Penerangan tells them to. Unfortunately for RTM, Kadir is a really crappy menteri.
Have you ever listened to RTM Radio stations? they have so many stations that concentrate on different interest of their various target groups. also, they are probably the only ones that promote ethnic music and culture.
but I went home last summer to a family obsessed with "Bintang RTM" and RTM's Malay soap operas. I take it as a sign that RTM is definitely improving. but people bad-mouthing it is not helping.

if rtm keeps supporting them, then where's the incentive to work like hell to produce programs that actually make the cut and meet the industrial standard? by merely supporting them, rtm does not support emerging artists, it breeds inferior ones.
same argument as the malaysian bumi affirmative action policy...

learn from mistakes.
don't you see progress in RTM's TV programs? (unless you yourself don't watch RTM that is)
A person, no matter how ambitious he/she is, does not suddenly become a genius producer. everybody have to start somewhere.
A lot of the RTM's TV programs are produced by young producers. go figure.

I sense that people are talking about whether RTM has improved.
But why would we need such a question at all ?
What in the first place make us less advanced in terms of TV production ?
Look at HK with only 6 million population, or Singapore with only 4 million population. With such a much smaller pool of population (and also talents), why did we allow ourselves to do worse than them in the first place ?

I really couldn't c much changes in RTM tv channels in terms of presentation and also the choice of programmes showed on-air. Indeed, I would certainly prefer to watch tv3 which has more up to date and lively shows to watch. Just try switching the channels. And I also wonder if the information put on the infotainment part in RTM are accurate. I couldn't remember any at the moment but some certainly does raise my eyebrows. RTM certainly have to put in much more effort in improving other than changing some names, colours and logos.
However, the rebranding of RTM's radio stations certainly have some effects, which I feel are now almost on par with other radio stations.
