Depending on your location and your interests, you might want to consider the volunteer program at Zoo Negara. I really like this program.

Here's a link: http://www.zoonegara.org.my/volunteerprogram.html
Do check it out.

Basically, all you have to do is fill in this form: http://www.zoonegara.org.my/education/pdf/volunteerprogramme.pdf
Then submit the form either by post, or if you live nearby, you can just drop the form off. After that, just wait for them to tell you when you should come and start the program. :)

It depends on where you'll be placed. Basically, a zookeeper will be in charged of you, and you just do whatever they tell you to do. How your experience would turn up to be very much depends on how nice that zookeeper is. :P

On my first time they placed me in the Children's world (I was still in school at that time, and they typically put kids volunteering here). We fed the animals, swept the floor, clean up the whole Children's world area, etc.

Since the volunteer program is aimed to nurture love towards animal, the zookeepers would spend some time to teach you about the animals. If they sensed that you have certain fear towards animal, they might as well help you overcome that fear. FYI, my friend was so scared of guinea pig, and somehow managed to overcome that fear after spending quite some time playing with them. After you have finished every work that the zookeper can possibly come up with, then, they might take you on a tour around the zoo, and chat. If they are too busy, then they will let you have a break and go see other animals on your own.

At other times, I've also been placed in the bird section. I don't have much memory about that place except that we fed the birds, and clean their cages (just use a broom to take the feathers off their cages). But I guess this part is nice too, since I get to be much closer to the birds compared to when I was just visiting.

p/s: I never have to clean up the animal poop though.

Haha as long as i don't have to clean up poop i'm good with it. I think i'll get a few friends to join me and give it a try.

I'm afraid of snakes. Afraid is an understatement really. More along the lines of terrified and so on. I cannot stand snakes, even those "ular daun" or "ular lidi". Sure hope they don't try anything funny.

I'm scared of snakes too. Once, they brought out a snake for us (the volunteers) to touch. I took my time to gather as much courage as I can. And finally when I think I was ready, the snake became a bit edgy (from being touched by too many people), and the zookeeper decided that it's time to conclude that session. Too bad that I didn't get the chance to confront my fear again after that.

If you take an LRT, stop at Wangsa Maju, and from there either take taxi, or RapidKL. I don't know which bus you should take.

However, the zoo website stated this:

Getting Here:

Address :
Zoo Negara, Hulu Kelang, 68000 Ampang, Selangor Darul Ehsan

By Light Rail Transit System (LRT) :
- Alight at Wangsa Maju Station, Kelana Jaya Line
- Board a taxi to Zoo Negara

By Bus :
- Metrobus number 16 from Central Market, KL
- Rapid KL number U34 from Putra LRT Station, Wangsamaju, KL
- Rapid KL number U23 from Titiwangsa Station, KL

If you go and volunteer, do share your stories here. I'd like to know if there are anything new nowadays.:amuse Thanks.
