Hello,
Since we just moved to the new server, I seriously think that there are more stuff need to be fixed. If you catch any problem in this site, please post it here.
Thanks

Yeah, all 4 links on miscellaneous, recom visions, sitemap, from the tiop nav bar are broken. Same goes to web links on quick navigations.

I think there's a tool for automatic resizing of pictures. Let me find out and let you know, so that we can just auto resize / crop any avatars that are too big.

I also saw a spell checker module written for "easy integration" with php nuke (softspell.com) any php nuke expert wanna try it out? They have demo on their site.

The links will continue to be broken until the domain name is fully resolved... usually takes about 24-72 hours :)

I just want to announce that I'm now taking a break from ReCom's webmastership for a period of 2-4 weeks. the reason being the school is opening plus I have two major website projects to do .. that said, I will still log in to participate in the forums but just as a normal user .. I will be back to help as soon as i get my hands free of stuff ... thanks and good luck to all of you.

shoot any deliverables over here and i'll try my best. i'm quite settled in now, and it still won't be my turn to be on-call for another 2-4 weeks.

I'll be quite busy too this few weeks as I'm preparing to UK....

Btw, the address in the address bar.....can it be changed into www.recom.org ?
It's http://nac01.kinetichost.net/~recom/index.php now....

the domain name is the most trickiest thing whenever we change hosting. So, I might say, it would take another 2 weeks to change it. Plus, the name is under Bachok's name... I just need to wait for him to come back home and we'll go from there...

It's just a small problem actually....may not be a problem to most even... I think, cos not many notice that.

Why would you need two weeks to do that? Where did you register your domain on?

I think the propagation itself will take 24-72 hours.. but I think our ISP (USC) might be keeping the DNS cache for too long so we won't quickly see the change on our end.. but others on other ISPs should see it fine

I think the domain is only forwarded to this address, hence showing the domain of the host instead of recom.org

You need the domain to be "hosted" and not forwarded. You need to do some changes to it and make sure the domain is pointed to the nameservers of your host.

Other problems:
- Time on banner, forum time ...all seems not right.
- Avatars (Suddenly a lot of ppl having no avatar)

The times at the top bar, they're all 3 hours ahead. probably because the server is using EST

forum time is all right though

the avatars? must be the work of the Avatar Nazis :P

Sometimes....the loading time is quite fast....but sometimes its a bit slow...slower than previous server... Was it just me? Anyone else having the same situation?

Here's a brain dump of a few fixed items and ToDos. If you guys see more things broken, please do not hesitate to add on to this.

Gallery was fixed last I check :) (who fixed it? thanks!)

Creative Corner permissions problem fixed. I uploaded a new song for merdeka day karaoke.

World is still weird, not bothering for the time being coz works most of the time.

Visions link in menu fixed.

Enlarged textarea for feedback.

Work Items:

Tour is broken - the whole module is missing - ichol?

Pagination - add more links, maybe each 5 pages, instead of just the first and last three pages. tomorrow (sleepy now)

Fix the last page no post thing. This is gonna be hard, does anyone have experience dealing with the pagination math?

Avatar auto-resize?

Performance? pandaboy complained abou it - but I've had no other incidence? Our code is relatively lightweight and the bandwidth from the hosting service has been reasonable. If there's an isolated case (certain pages on the website) then post it here too.

Quick reply? (i.e. post at the bottomg of last page) Anyone a fan of this - this requires a lot of re-engineering of the bb code, and possibly break things. Unless there's some very compelling reason to do so (e.g. increase posting by 100%) I'd suggest against it.

Ok, everyone, shoot away!

Aside: The more I venture in to the phpnuke framework, the more impressed I am by the contributors. There's a lot of thought put in to the design. In wonder how many clever things have we broken since we started customizing on the code base.

The pagination issue seems to be an affliction of many BB software.. not only phpBB. I can't remember the exact solution but I recall that the fix is just to add a -1 somewhere in the code..

Automatic avatar resizing is definitely possible using built-in functions in PHP.. there should even be pre-made code around somewhere.

Performance - I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one, jinjoo :) Try looking over the Web Page Speed Report (http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/wso.php?url=http://nac01.kinetichost.net/~recom/) of Recom's home page. It weighs in at over 50kb, which is really quite big. Some of the images can use more optimizations for starters.. don't even get me started on standards-compliance ;) I don't think that the webhost is the issue here but of course, the speed highly depends on your geographic location too :)

Yes, I really like quick reply because it's so much more convenient since I don't really use the GUI to format my post anyway.. it'll also save the webhost some bandwidth because it's one less page to download. A quick googling for "phpbb quick reply" yielded quite a bunch of results - it's just an add-on feature so it shouldn't break anything.

Does anyone think that the page that comes up after you post a message is redundant? I like and am used to forum software that immediately redirect me to the thread after posting something.. but that's just me :D

Yey - that's one down. Thanks screw3d for your tip - I didn't know people already wrote it. I'll look for more prewritten stuff. Meanwhile everyone is free to test and post comments about the feature, anything from appearance to security hole etc. Hope this will encourage more people to post replies (and hopefully not degrade the quality of the post) 8)

I've looked at the reports about the bandwidth. Seem pretty normal for such a colorful site like ours. I know we're no google. But also keep in mind that most images are cached locally and only retrieved once (instead of the what the web page is doing, which is querying from scratch). The other times you'll just get back a reply stating that the cache the user has is fresh. What I do agree we should focus on is this:

TOTAL_SIZE - Warning! The total size of this page is 166781 bytes, which will load in 33.64 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Consider reducing total page size to less than 30K to achieve sub eight second response times on 56K connections.
Basically we need to introduce less pix on the gateway page. The page itself stands as 10823 bytes, trimming that brings the page up quicker and the images will flow in later for new users. Good tool though. Will bookmark this for future use.

Now if you'll only make it dock directly below the thread (above the "newtopic" and "post reply" buttoms) Looks neater to me that way :P

Yeah I'm a picky nutjob

hmm, I can imagine putting this right below the two buttons and move the Page x of x and watch this topic for replies away, and then make a clear title that this is the quick reply box. Putting this higher will make the quick reply box very confusing especially with the new topic and post reply button around, which I think is more essential. Or should I throw away navigation stuff? Like the middle link, put it much lower or further to the right?

jiinjoo
02-09-2004, 02:25 PM
tired.. there's some aesthetic problem on the right. I'll try to replace the pagination code tomorrow with something better, possibly with every page, but without the server precalculating every page's post in advance. Zzz....
