Hey, I think this would be a great idea.

I've been spending sometime fixing the Malay Google site, because it's just painful - lots of grammar mistakes. I was wondering how could I get hold of some language expert and all of a sudden I thought - hey, can't we just ask all our friends on ReCom here to help? Afterall a large number of you score pretty well for your Malay right :) Unlike me who's still pondering the difference between putting a -kan or a -i behind a verb, translation should be no problem for those who's still using the language everyday.

and sign-in (if you have gmail it's the same account, or else just create one). Select that you know Malay and then you'll get to see all the phrases. I corrected some of them but it still doesn't show (they are going to verify each and every submission by hand) but just submit what you think makes sense.


And we can use this forum to discuss certain words. Like the one I was pondering for a while - preferences. The current translation is "pilihan" like http://www.google.com.my/preferences?hl=ms, but pilihan is weird....

A few more to get started like "turn on" a feature - do you hidupkan SafeSearch? or you pasangkan SafeSearch? or what?

How about the phrase "Saya Rasa Bertuah" and "Carian Canggih"?

The current translation is "pilihan

err... i think the first word that pops up in my mind is kegemaran. Like when u prefer something, u would say saya lebih menggemari pilihan tersebut. pilihan is more like alternative or choices... or picks... how about KElebihgemarAN? errr... i dunno... coz we have words like ketidakjujuran.... so maybe that fits?

I think it's better to translate it from the context, not lexically ... for example:

"Advanced search" -> "Carian canggih"

I think, since what "Advanced search" really means is to find things using more criteria, it is a "more detailed search", thus, "Carian terperinci" fits better ..

"I'm feeling lucky" ? OK, now who here really knows WTH was the people at Google.Inc were thinking when they decided to use that phrase? what is the significance of using "feeling lucky" to relate to quickjumping to the 1st result of the search? perhaps, it's something like "I want my most matched result, quick!", or perhaps "however long the search result will be, I don't care. Just give me the 1st" ... only after understanding that could we find the "I'm feeling lucky" malay translation of that phrase ..

that said, these are my choices:

"I'm feeling lucky" -> "Carian segera"
(since it gives the 1st search result so that you don't have to wait for the whole list to load up)

"Preference" -> "Konfigurasi carian"
(since what you really do in the "Preference" page is to configure your search)

"Global Preferences" -> "Konfigurasi menyeluruh" / "Konfigurasi global"

"turn of SafeSearch" -> "Gunakan 'SafeSearch'"
(when you 'turn on' a feature, you use that feature .. unlike a lightbulb, which lights up at the moment you switch it on, you merely choose to ask the Google searching engine to use the SafeSearch for your next search. thus-> "Gunakan SafeSearch")

Of course, there's "Pilihan Bertuah" but Barakah is to be preferred, don't you agree?

I don't have a "kamus dewan" but I checked some standard-looking malay language websites and they use "konfigurasi" in their pages .. so I safely assumed "konfigurasi" is already imported into malay language ...

note: it's my habit to do some little research 1st b4 posting something in here ... I hope everyone else does that too but I can see some don't do so ...

Like I said, do not translate lexically; translate from the context ... you don't really have to rack your "perbendaharaan kata" (i.e vocabulary, come on guys where has your malay language gone to :P j/k) to find the word that lexically means "lucky" in malay ... think about what the button "I'm feeling lucky" really does and find the best malay phrase to describe that ...

While pressing the "I'm feeling lucky" button does effectively give you the highest ranked page, that's not what the phrase "I'm feeling lucky" is supposed to convey.

We should try to capture the flavor and spirit of the phrase, grounded in cultural specificities as it is and with all the idiosyncrasies of Google's merry band of hackers.

Focussing on the effective function often results in a loss of flavor, especially when in this case, the phrase in the original language doesn't even convey the effective function.

Right now, based on what I've just written, my best approximation is "Carian Bertuah."
