This issue of safety and security has been discussed pretty at length in the local media lately. We have seen the establishment of Rakan COP, the reactivation of Rukun Tetangga, crime watch, residents association etc.

What is your view point on this issue?

Is it merely due to the media coverage? Do you think it is safer or more dangerous in Malaysia now compared to say 10 years ago? this would be a good question to answer for those who are currently in Malaysia or those who went back recently. Don't judge based on perceived notion portrayed in the media, but through your personal experience and feelings.

Is the crime watch by resident associations beneficial in the long run? Remember that these people are doing it voluntarily, and this may affect their productivity the next day. Any suggestions/remedies that could be put forward?

ReComers, lets put our thinking thoughts on more issues concerning our country and hopefully it will bring back the intense discussion and concern in ReCom's forum.

hmm a few months back my parents' car (parked in front of the house) got burgled. he got away with about rm 70 in coins and the car stereo. it probably happened during the day when people are not around working (it was my mother's car and she was at some kursus at langkawi), so and rukun tetangga wouldn't have been able to prevent it, unless they recruit an army of sudip wielding makciks heh.

as for house burglary, well i havent heard of any burglary around here recently, so am unable to comment.

the RT would only go on patrol at nights, usually, so i guess they would have some effect on night crimes. but during the day, i am not so sure.

Have you guys been to Kota Raya recently on Sundays? It's filled up with people from Asian countries (esp Bangladesh, Indonesia, Phillipines, etc)

I practically got harassed by the guys (foreigners there). There was this Indonesian guy which groped my "hindquarters"(to put it nicely) :x while walking from an opposite direction. Then, there was this group of foreigners (which I think are Thais or Burmese people) called me (I was alone at that time) and when I ignored them, one of them threw a cup of iced drink at me! I was so angry :x but recalling Darren Kang's case, I just quickly removed myself from that place. saiaku, saiteiiiiii

Just imagine, being back in KL for just a month and I had encountered numerous 'unfortunate' incidents.

I think it is because some of the Malaysians have the 'I don't care attitude'.

Another example happened on my way back home (after meeting Kerek at KLCC). The bus did not take the normal route (of which I remember). He just threw me somewhere dark and lonely (with no taxi, less to mention human around-->I do not really have an idea where it was...no handphone nor public phone in sight , S***) and he scolded me for not getting down at the last station (I guess he was hurrying to take the bus home). I had to walk a lonely walk of 3km (9pm at a lonely street is scarry) and I was so relieved that I got home (I am from Cheras) in one piece.

Any KL girls out there want to share their experience?

Is pepper spray useful?

Because Cornell Police did a safety talk and they argue that it is not safe.

The police chose a girl in the audience and then ask her to hold a pepper spray, and then just talk to her, as another police hug her from behind, and see her reaction. She didn't manage to have any reaction at all...

And the police repeated it with different audience and none of the students manage to react anything...

So, is pepper spray safe or good enough?

hmm how clean was that demonstration? it was probably on a stage in front of a lot of people. the girl probably didn't feel any danger and the proper "fight or flee" reaction didnt kick in? i wonder would her reactions been any different if say, she was alone at a bus stop at night and a guy comes to chat her up?

Everywhere is not safe anymore..even during broad daylight. I suspected that development has something to do with the increase of crimes. But I dont know what explains that. For the past few years, crime rate at my area was really low.. But now, after getting more developed with 2 newly build shopping centres, lots of snatch thefts, house break-in and etc were reported. Police are useless...neighbour reported the house break-in but they take hours to arrive. Who should take the blame?

hrmmm...
I doubt we can do anything about it, aside from staying at home and hoping they dont come to your house. Definitely someone in the government should do something to try to reduce crimes. All this crime rate increase is because our socioeconomic factors. As they say, money is the root of all evil.

Things the government should do:

1 - Look into the socioeconomic factors that cause crimes to happen and mitigate them.

2 - Reduce the use of foreign labor in other to create a high-tech and mature society( has anyone else noticed that we have become too dependent on 'slave' labor?)

3 - Tell the police to shape up or ship out.

4 - Create more jobs.

In the US, most people are homeless because the choose to, not because they had no choice. Of course everyone wants a high paying job, but crime is no way to get money.

If the government wont do anything about it, or if what they do have no effect, then we have to be prepared for all eventuallity. One thing is for sure, those who commit these crimes should be punished in a way that makes him/her an example to everyone else, i.e.: rule by fear of force rather than by force itself.

The issue of safety and security of Malaysia is worrying.Althought relevant people guarantee that our country still in safe level, the cases of raping, snatching, robbing, stealing and murdering increase gradually. We seldom see the police patrol in rural and urban areas. The criminal seems realizing the weak point of police force and society before starting their crime. What should we do?

We have to be careful once we go out. However,it is also danger staying alone at home.Be aware of the suspicous people who are strolling in your area.Don't talk to anyone who asks for your help as they use this tactic to cheat the community. The most important thing is police force must on thier duty and increase the patrol time in an area which has criminal cases.Environment safety needs cooperation of the society and security force.

Just to let you know that you guys should be careful and not letting any strangers to touch you. stay away from sales man and missionaries. you can't trust anybody nowadays

it is possible to hit a person in a certain manner and the person goes blank so that the person can be programmed to obey certain commands. this can be done using various methods such as hypnotism, NLP or Pattern Interruption.

This is not something new, although people are not taking it seriously.

I think kissing in public is illegal.

Singapore is worse I think.. if you get caught doing oral sex you have to stay in prison for 2 years (culture shock for some westerners eh?)

Seems to me that we're doomed to act like robots. No showing any affection! No showing anything but obedience!

dude, do you seriously don't mind people having oral sex in front of you? engaging in any sexual activities(oral, vaginal, anal etc) should be strictly private. to me, kissing is still okay but anything 'heavier' should not be done where other people can see.

I thought that the oral sex thing was :
If u were to get caught in doing oral sex then~> you might go to prison up to 2 years. No matter u're doing it in ur home or in the street...??? :?:[/b]

The problem is...
doing oral sex in a hotel room is also illegal in Singapore.

I am not sure if it is illegal for husband and wife to do oral sex or 69 stuffs but possibly it is also illegal in Singapore.
