View Full Version : The concept of hacking

I'm by no means the best computer programmer in the world, nor the best hacker. I'm not even a geek. I think I'm masterof_none.
Anyway, I open this forum to explore the concept of hacking brought by luke.
Before that, let's look where the term 'hack' come from.
It came from MIT's http://tmrc.mit.edu] ( where all their members 'hack' the stuff there. It means to 'improve' something..or something like pranks. MIT people know best.
But, the media has manipulated the idea of hack, changing the definition into somebody who tirelessly try to break into a system.
This is not the origianal idea, and MIT students out there can verify this
(Hack culture at MIT still exist)
check this out:
[url]http://hacks.mit.edu/
The best book to read is Steven Levy's :
Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0141000511/qid=1069484002/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/103-5518116-9765453?v=glance&n=507846
So, hackers doesn;t mean you create a virus, buffer overflow, stealing password or something like that. Those are crackers.
Hackers are all the people who download the program and make it from good to better, from better to the best.

basically, hackers are programmers.
but hollywood helped screwed the concept
there are 2 type of hackers
white hat and black hat.
The white hat is the your every day programmer.
The black hat is the baaaaaaaaaaaad people.
script kiddies are could also be called hacker but most ppl would argue n00b does not deserve to be identified as hacker

Sadly I do :(
And if not, there're tonnes of l337 speak dictionaries out there.
Hacking is, like many terms out there for example spam or program or mouse, been borrowed in to the computing/technology realm to fill in the void. Having such a large boom in the field, there're insufficient names to go around describing behavior.
If you look up a dictionary, hack might mean something like "to cut or sever with repeated irregular or unskillful blows" or "to clear or make by or as if by cutting away vegetation". Basically you want to make something work, but in a crude manner, you hack.
That's why we "hack" everyday, sort of.. We need to get the homework program running and still can't make it work, we "hack" last minute. Bad guys want to get their money from the bank so they "hack" the bank's server. This will be the best literal treatment you can justify, beyond that it is pretty much convention, a.k.a. no fixed definition (e.g. is 14 yr old script kiddy a hacker? how baout 15 yr old?)

Yeah... Just to chip in, since I used to be so obsessed with the so-called hacking until I realized that I was nothing more than a script-kiddie. That was like when I was in form 1 btw. I dare say the majority of hacker wannabes who fall in this script kiddie category, don't even know the slightest of what programming is all about.
Linus Torvalds, the man behind Linux, is an exemplary white hat hacker. But I don't blame black hat ones though, because if you look at the matter in a positive way, they are the ones who have contributed towards the improvement of netwrk security systems. Sometimes they intrude, leave a note to systm admin, and leave; simple as that.

I think you got it wrong dude.
White people are called crackers. And black ppeople are called niggers.
Both are authentic American slang.

You can learn those anywhere on the Internet, just google it.
If u r lazy to learn it just find some l33t translators out there. Eg. http://www.jayssite.com/stuff/l33t/l33t_translator.html
There are many different version though....
eg. 1 w0Nd3R 1f aNy0N3 W1LL und3R5tANd u2?
eg. 1 \|/0|\||)3r 1|= a|\|`/0|\|3 \|/1|_|_ |_||\||)3r57a|\||) |_|2?
