Hi, I know i've been an ass, but I really need some help from those who are familiar with computerrs.

I spilt water on my keyboard (I know I know). It's a old laptop (Presario 1200).

Now, the DOWN button sticks, and is constantly being "pressed" even if I don't touch it.

Is there anyway I can disable the button?

Cheers!

i used to own a presario 1200XL400 long time ago.

To fix the keyboard,

1. get a T9 or T8 Torx screw driver
2. see the panel where your power button is? turn yur laptop around and right under it should be two screws holding it in place.
3. remove the two screws and use a swiss army knie to gently pop the plastic panel off
4.your keyboard should be easily accessible from here, slide it up and out from your comp.
5. gently disconnect the ribbon cable from your comp
6. slide keyboard up and out fully and disengage from comp
7. rinse keyboard underrunning water for a while
8. hang to dry for a day or two
9. blow with hair dryer before you do put it back on
10. reverse process to fit it back on

have fun!
and this is jsut a tip, do as u please but dont come back to me if it gets really screwed up
hehehehe

Won't rinsing keyboard make it worse? This is not funny!

My comp is my breadwinner! I still have a 15,000 word paper to write!

nope it wont, as long as it is not water with sugar or anything like that. Clear tap water should be ok. I've done that on my comp before. plus,

1 - I'm not telling u to dip the whole computer in water
2 - This is from experience. Take it or leave it. Sending it to compaq will probably cost u and arm and a leg.

3 - an alternative is to use a keyboard Remapper

No, no soap :P :P :P

Another personal wisdom - don't buy Compaq laptops. Their keyboard controller is really bad. Yours is the 3rd case I've come accross, the other two friends I have one has a 2 stuck and the other has one of the insert/delete/home etc keys pressed.

yea, i agree compaq's keyboard's bad... koz mine's compaq's too... sometimes the dirt can just go in... and then stuck there... and then.. u can't press some particular buttons

do you have an extra PS/2 slot on your laptop? or a USB? Get a cheap keyboard connect it to your laptop.

well...keyboards sometimes do get some of these symptoms...but some are more vulnerable than others, as in the Compaq case here...do vacuum it regularly to suck up the dust or alternatively, get a air-blaster (the canned thing usually sold in computer stores) to blow out the dust if you want better effect...

When the keyboard controller gets out of whack, it might be too late to do that. The key will be permenantly pressed. And most of the time the fix is to replace the keyboard controllers, which might cost quite a bit. And then you'll have to count on the technician's magic hands coz laptops aren't your plug and play desktops where you can just take something out and put back in and expect it to work the same way as it did. Well, at least it has never worked for me! :)

NEED HELP!!!

ok... I'm having this quite common hard-to-resolve problem:

just moved to a new sublet for my spring and summer.... have to connect to a wireless connection at my new place, however, when i try to connect to it(with all the WEP key entered and everything done), it says i'm connected, but data aren't transfering...

and to make sure that the problem is with my laptop (or my PCMCIA wireless card), i tried it at another place with wireless internet connection... and as expected... the problem is with my laptop...

any idea??

(i'm really doomed without my internet connection...)

er... not really sure with the jargon...

Network Authentication: Open
Data Encryption : Disabled
Network to access : Access point (infrastructure)

TCP/IP :
Obtain an IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically
Automatic private IP address

tried repairing but it wouldn't work... what other info do u need...

i'm googling this at the mean time... many people seem to have this problem... and there are quite a number of solutions... (patch update, hotfix.... and all) but amazingly, i left my thumbdrive at my room... need to go back and grab it for trasfering those hotfix to my laptop....

darn... felt so helpless without internet connection... looks like i won't survive long without internet...

not sure if this is correct, but it works sometimes on my laptop:

goto network connections, then if you see any connections that are 'bridged' - then right-click & unbridge it

Doucle click on the wifi icon at the taskbar, search for the wifi connection that you intend to connect to. If the network itself is hiddne you will have to connect to it manually.

Enter the name of the network and the passphrase (if required). Connect and voila, you have an internet connection. If you don't have the passphrase, go and get it from the admin. And no, we are not going to teach how to hack the passphrase here.
