I was wondering if maybe we can implement a feature where members can rate a forum post based on its usefulness and/or relevancy to the topic maybe using the formula Sum(Votes x Points)/Number of posts. And maybe display it instead of the HP, MP EXP thingy now.

Maybe more useful since it can show the community standing of the poster.

Just a suggestion heh

what kind of style? there are many kinds of rating. my suggestion is to go with the way "reviews" are rated on amazon. On amazon you get a question like:

Was this review helpful to you? http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/detail/yes http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/detail/no (Report this)

So maybe we can have something like:

Was this post helpful to you? http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/detail/yes http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/detail/no (Report this)

And as a follow up - since post on the forum are more like conversations, what does it mean to have some of the post being "better" than others? Unless the comments are about one single thing.. You get what I mean?

How about rating the entire thread instead of a single post? So that we have more like a:

Was this topic helpful to you? http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/detail/yes http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/detail/no (Report this)

i was thinking along the lines that the user himself will be rated based on his posts. can't think of a site that does this at the moment though.

that said, a thread rating system would be interesting too. how about assigning AktifPoints to individual threads? Though that would only indicate popularity and not usefulness.

I would think that we could have rating for individual person for the post and also each thread.

i would like to bring to attention this suggestion again but for a different reason.

Is it possible to have a post rating system ala slashdot that allows us to hide posts that get low or negative points. There's just too much to go through on recom now and i was thinking maybe this might help organize things for the more serious participants.

I'm not totally sure if this is feasible as recom is not just a put your comments up forum but also a request for help forum. So it may be the case that questions or requests won't get voted up and thus may not be read by some users.

Maybe we can only implement ratings such that we can rate down posts.

A rating system would spell the END of misled_youth.

However, I have to agree with the suggestion.

No, I don't think it's feasible to implement comments ala slashdot because of the exact reasons you said above, and also that a lot of the comments in slashdot are mutually exclusive while there is coherence among recom posts.

Anyway, what is the HP, MP EXP thing? Is it still there?

From my experience on other forums this rating system is not new and has been done on other forums, using repping system to rate the post, and the thread and single individuals.

Here?s an example of a forum with such system :

http://www.narutomania.com/forums/

It?s a very good forum with proper system.

I doubt forum like PhpBB can apply such system but it is possible to use this system on vBulletin forums.

How about these two MODS:

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=46456&highlight=rating

so how how?

youngyew...i agree with you that a rating system may distract from the flow of the thread.

How about my second suggestion, that we only allow mod downs.
THat way posts that are irrelevant or are personal attacks or are rude in any way will get modded down.

of course moderators will have a say if people are abusing the rating system and can reset the rating of any post.

What if the forumers do not trust the mods?

I trust the mods, as long as they rate the posts based on the merit of the message itself but not the person who posted the message.

I doubt that they are unbias.
