SINGAPORE: Malaysians led by media, hotel and property tycoon Robert Kuok dominated a list of South-East Asia?s 40 wealthiest people released by US business magazine Forbes.

The South-East Asian Top 40 had a combined net worth of US$47bil (RM179bil) and the poorest among them was worth US$210mil (RM798mil), according to a report appearing in the publication?s Sept 6 issue.

Malaysia accounted for 10 entries on the list, followed by Thailand with nine. Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines each contributed seven names.

The roster included one prominent politician ? Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra ? but not a single woman made it into the exclusive club.

Kuok, owner of the South China Morning Post newspaper in Hong Kong as well as the Shangri-La hotel chain and real estate developer Kerry Properties, had a net worth of US$4.1bil (RM15.6bil), according to Forbes.

He was followed by fellow Malaysian Ananda Krishnan, owner of Astro and Maxis Communications, who was estimated to be worth US$3.5bil (RM13.3bil).

Third on the list was Singaporean property developer and hotelier Kwek Leng Beng, who is worth US$2.8bil (RM10.6bil).

Tied in fourth position with a net worth of US$2.3bil (RM8.7bil) each were Indonesian tobacco tycoon Rachman Halim, Singapore real estate developer Ng Teng Fong and Malaysian financial and property magnate Quek Leng Chan, cousin of Singapore?s Kwek.

Thaksin, who made his fortune from telecommunications, was ranked 16th with a net worth of US$1.2bil (RM4.6bil). ? AFP

Can anyone get in touch with one of them? We can certainly start a thread on "How to be one of the richest man in SEA" and invite them to be the expert on this matter...

Closest I can try is Francis Yeoh - can go sing opera for him :D

don't let it bother you. nobody gets rich by being of a particular race. in the long run, it is how you manipulate your brains, charm, intuition, opportunities and the people around you that gets you the wealth. you can complain about your misfortune or change your circumstances into your advantages. pick your choice.

Talking about donating to charity, anyone has any statistic on how much these rich people have donated to charity?

In a way, they have contributed their part in the income tax that they have paid, but it would be great if this notion of contributing back to charity could be further expanded...

Any say on this?
