I have come across an article in BBC "Malaysia Challenges India and China". This article talks about the constant in-coming of many MNCs which are looking to locate its call centers and to outsource it in Malaysia.

What is your take on this issue?

To have call centers, we need good English speakers. We need to train people to brush away as much of our local accent as possible. Customer satisfaction surveys shows that having calls handled by a person with differnt accent performed worse, when given even amount of patience.

It is big business no doubt. The trick to figure out how to have a trained workforce for a low price - the constant struggle in outsourcing :)

sorry to be the party pooper, but i think it's hightime malaysia (re)considers carving its own niche in higher-end industries. other industries like outsourcing, agriculture, manufacturing has its fundamentals in low national price levels and international exchange rates. we have neither.

instead we should focus on refining what we already have, the much-touted MSC, and higher value-added products. in other words we should aim to compete against singapore and taiwan and all the other friendly little tigers.
