ubercool!
would be really cool if the biofuel business takes off. we'll be less reliant on fossil fuel, and the agricultural sector will get a boost.

Getting ready for biofuel
Eileen Ng

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 4:
From cooking oil to biofuel: Malaysia is close to making palm diesel a commercial reality.

Palm diesel could soon be available in petrol stations for as low as 85 sen a litre, just two sen more than the pump price of diesel.

However, to make the biofuel attractive to consumers, the Government would have to stop subsidising diesel, which is sold for 83 sen a litre now, Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui said.

The Cabinet committee studying the Government's fuel subsidies would make a decision at its next meeting, he said.

Subsidies for diesel and petrol cost the Government RM9 billion a year. Average crude oil prices have held at about US$41 (RM155) a barrel this year, the highest in 21 years. Crude oil hit a record US$55.67 a barrel in October, but has since eased to about US$45.

Palm diesel has long been proposed as a renewable source of energy, an alternative to the world's depleting reserves of fossil fuels.

In Europe, the EU Commission is aiming to replace at least two per cent of fossil fuels with environment-friendly biofuels by the end of next year.

Chin said the ministry was preparing a report on the commercial production of palm diesel for the Cabinet committee.

Pricing was a major issue as the current price of petroleum diesel would be too close to the price of the palm diesel, he said. "When crude palm oil (CPO) is converted into palm diesel, it costs about two sen more per litre than diesel." The cost of producing palm diesel included refining and distribution costs, he said.

The report will also look into the legal framework and availability of palm oil.

"On production cost, palm oil is 40 per cent cheaper than other biofuel sources," he said.

Sources said plans were already being drawn up to get petroleum companies' co-operation to place palm diesel pumps in their stations.

Representatives from petroleum companies were expected to give their views at a seminar next week, they said.

Chin said there had already been interest in commercial production.

A Klang Valley company had even proposed to build a plant in Negri Sembilan to produce biofuel for export to Europe, he said.

"We would be happy to allow the company to do so as long as it does not disrupt supply to the traditional industrial users," he said.

The technology to convert CPO into palm diesel was developed by the Malaysia Palm Oil Board in the 1980s.

The fuel is less polluting.

If this is going to take off, the distribution is a problem. For instance, its hard to find pump station that offers natural gas for ngv and electricity for electric car in the US, even more in Malaysia.

Somebody needs to provide the fund for infrastructure that enable the proliferation of such fuel. And so far, it has not been met with much success.

have they really cracked the long chain hydrocarbon? If not, combusting this fuel would be creating a lot more greenhouse gasses than normal diesel...

i agree... but they shld introduce it slowly and by implementing it regionally...(sectionally)step-by-step.... like introducing the self service gas station (starting with Klang Vallry, and extends it slowly)... it is rather successful... i think

Malaysia has implemented the use of Natural Gas for public vehicles(Taxi) at Klang Valley too, about 2 years ago, if i remember correctly... BUT, there's a huge problem, currently, only Petronas is selling Natural Gas, they shld really build more such stations...... there's only 1 station around Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya area....)the station is only 1 block away from my house... and too bad for the station, there's always a long queue of taxis at the station, deterring other vehicles user from purchasing gas from this station becoz it is always congested... it has become the unofficial taxi station of Subang Jaya...the NGV incident shows that the planning and implementing of the NGV is lousy... and they shld really learn from their mistakes...

so, if they really want to make this palm diesel a success, they shld really make a darn good plan AND follow the plan.... no point having a first class system and 3rd class maintainence... same to this, no point having a first class plan, but no class action...

how about the diesel engine??... do they need some modification to the normal diesel engine in ordre to combust the Palm Diesel more efficiently??? if yes, how much does it cost???all these questions need to be solved in order to have less problem after its implementation...

this biodiesel is made of palm oil and diesel right ?? then how can they say it's renewable, think about it, diesel !!

think if the funding keeps going in, sooner of later they will produce a full-palm-based diesel..so no big q abt erneuebare energie...

5% pal oil an 95% diesel...?
hmmmmm

now there is already oil-water composition fuel so....

Perth alone has a fleet of HYDROGEN fuel cell public busses.

Why can't with we see that in Msia compared to those chimney on wheels we call Rapid KL?

we can then fuel all of our cars with biodiesal. all malaysian cars will be biodiesal cars and mas will have a fleet of biodiesal planes. :D

yaya...fuel all of our transports with biodiesel and we will see a lot of cars stalling in the streets and airplanes faling down from the sky...luckily my favourite air-asia is not included...

so 30 sen rise is a psychology agenda to make rakyat accept biofuel without questioning?
boy, they sure are master of brainwashing

nah...the tax for diesel vehicles in the peninsula is still damn high...
