Hello,My name is Athif from Saudi Arabia but basically an indian.I was planning to visit KL this week for checking out universities. So just need a few information.I saw some hotels/single room for rent in BUKIT BINTANG.I just want to know if that is a good place to stay and if it is near the city centre? And I heard from many people that there are a lot of robbers out in KL,so I would like to know if that area is fine for living or not?
Thank you.

Hello Athif :) This sounds like it's going to be your first trip to Malaysia. Well, something you should know is that Bukit Bintang is located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the capital in Malaysia. So, definitely access to public transportation to get where you need to go to will not be so much of a problem. There are a few vague things you should clear up before you can expect some reliable help.

1. Are you looking for local private universities ? (UCSI, MMU, UNITEN,UTP, etc)

2. Are you looking for local foreign universities ? (HELP, Taylors', Monash, Nottingham, etc)

3. Does your university of choice needs to be somewhere near the city ? Because many campus sized universities are not exactly located near to Kuala Lumpur. Nottingham, MMU and UTP are a few examples to name.

4. What course/field you are planning to study ?

A warning though. Bukit Bintang is not exactly the safest place to be. It's a happening part of the city that almost never sleeps but with a catch. Snatch thieves are sadly all too common in a place like this. The most abundant criminals are the ever-sneaky pickpockets. This is all avoidable by just following simple rules. Ask for directions from locals in the nearby malls or shops or police officers ; travel around the city light ; don't make yourself stick out too much as a tourist, beware of strangers offering you help and selling you their wares.

Hope this info helps :laugh

Actually I have checked out TAYLORS university and the LAKE SIDE CAMPUS OF TAYLORS in subang jaya,INTI and UCSI.As the session is going to start from january,I thought of having a better look once i visit Kuala lumpur. The only problem is where I should take a hotel.Thats the reason i ended up on RECOM.ORG as this was really helpful when I wanted to have a list of universities that i wish to apply to.So,I would just like to know the best place in KL to take a hotel where i have atleast 75% guarantee that im safe :D

The fact is that Taylor's University, INTI and UCSI are all far apart from each other. Therefore, even if you should stay close to, say, Taylor's University, it will be a great distance still to go to INTI and UCSI. You can't really say where you can stay that you can reach all three places easily and fast.

So, if location to the university isn't that much of a fuss to you, and you wish to stay closer to spots like KLCC (the Twin Towers), Bukit Bintang, etc. there are choices for you. You can stay at Corus Hotel which is opposite the Twin Towers, or Novotel at Jalan Alor (Bukit Bintang Area). But these hotel aren't very cheap, and if you're looking for budget hotels they might be a farther distance away, such as the Smart Hotel in Wangsa Maju (a short train ride from KLCC). I've also heard of Cube Hotel, but I've never stayed there myself.

I was in the KLCC area for eight months when I had my industrial training at the towers in 2009. Although I encountered no untoward events, it is never wise to take safety and security for granted.

The fact is that there is no way to place a percentage to even suggest that you can be guaranteed safe. When in Kuala Lumpur (KL) city, you need to be constantly vigilant and never dress yourself in such a way that you will stand out in the crowd. Attracting too much attention may not be what you want after all.

Also, if you are travelling alone and that you will be spending quite a long time in Malaysia (a country which is foreign to you), I would suggest that you contact friends in Malaysia (if you have any) and update them about your travelling plans here - keep in touch with them most of the time if possible, or at least inform your embassy/consulate office/high commission office that you are here in Malaysia. I do not intend to frighten you or to give you the impression that Malaysia is such an unsafe country (it needn't be unsafe for you - just do what we do and that is be vigilant), but you can never know when these unwanted incidents may happen, no matter how small the probability may be.

Things that you would not want to do in KL include:

walking alone in dark alleys or dark streets
hanging around at places like KL Sentral, Central Market, etc. where they are usually quiet at night
hanging around the Wangsa Maju area too late at night
dressing yourself in a way that makes you stand out too much
carrying too much valuables with you in the streets

As long as you stay simple, you ought to be all right. It's best if you're travelling with a companion.

Little correction: Taylor's University is the Lakeside campus, while Taylor's in Subang Jaya doesn't offer degrees, only Pre-U programmes.
