Please read up on the website. The host file can help thwart a lot of advertisements in websites. Less stuff to download = faster web page loading. It also prevents sites like ads.doubleclick from collecting personal info and stuff.

Just donwload the google toolbar and spy bit search and destroy. Both would help tremendously. About the hosts file. YOur right. But the two program i recomended would do more then that. Just google for both.

Have you even went to the website? Both programs are completely different from what the Host file will do.

Google toolbar stops popups, and spybot removes spyware from your computer. The host file prevents connection to all these ad servers altogether. Completely different stuff. Ack I hate explaining all these. Read the thing!!

I found that spybot s&d also creates this host file automatically. I guess it also updates it when we update spybot......

ditto :) Compiling a good hists file isnt that easy.. so with the help of thousands of other on spy bot search and destroy.. save you a lot of time modifying the hosts file yourself.
