I can choose one optional module for my 2nd year course, and I'm interested in taking a subject in business. But the thing is..I have no basic background in business at all, except for the accounts subject I did for SPM (basically forgotten most of them already).

Ok...first of all....I wanna tell a bit about my long term plan. I'm doing Biochemistry at the moment...which basically means that it's a research based course. But the thing is, I don't want to stay in research field forever....like staying in the lab all the time...bla bla bla. So I'm thinking whether it's possible for me to work in business + science related field for example involved in managing a lab (instead of conducting the research itself), and etc. I know in this case, I have to work my way up very slowly....

So what type of business module is suitable for me to get started? Economics? Macro or micro? Accounting and Finance? Management? or what? The list for business modules are not out yet, but I have to let my department know by this Friday that I wont be taking science modules as my optional module.

So all comments will be deeply appreciated. Thanks!

Can you attend a few lectures from each module (just to shop around)? If you can, I would recommend choosing the modules that you find you can learn best -- i.e. good lecturers, interesting material etc.

It's often not really important what you learn, but rather how well you learn it.

I could do that, but the thing is....we're at the end of the term now....and most probably I wont understand what they're talking about (hence I will ended up hating business..lol). Besides, I've got plenty of lectures, tutorials and lab classes to attend as well... :?

I've tried to looked up on some books about business, but I don't know which area is more relevant and useful to me.

Personally, I would think that a basic course of macroecon or microecon would be a good start, if you prefer to learn through the more theoretical stand point. From the more practical stand point, perhaps finance would be a more relevant one. It is very difficult to pinpoint in this way, as if you may feel courses like entrepreneurships, business management, marketing, sales etc would be a good start too.

I agree with chenchow, something basic will do. In my university, those from science based majors without much business basic take simple courses like principles of economics and financial accounting, supposedly the 'foundation'.

Yeah, accounting could be a good start too. The only reason I don't mention it was that you have taken some accounting before, so I was thinking perhaps you can try to learn something else.

However, for anyone that plan to learn some business, in any aspect, there are tons of resources available online.

I would say that it would be possible, but ideally she should try and pick up english. English will be essential in most of the hotel job, but I still think that it is possible.
