i think if u wanna have a higher band in ur MUET... u have to score well in ur paper 3 there is 45 % if i did't make any mistake... and beside that u have to read more newspaper like THE STAR.. i think Reader Digest also can make u imporve ur english words... my teacher said use more hard words that can luar ur examinor..... talk more english so that u can do well in ur speaking test... Jia you Jia you

ya, i agree with that...jus a little bit of caution, only use words that you really know the meaning of, it won't help if you use a word jus for the sake f using it, that'll be disasterous...:)...magazines like Times and Newsweek will also improve your english (a lot), or, as an alternative, look for magazines that is of your topic of interest :)...
and if your english is good by the time of the exam, don worry abt the points given in each paper, jus relax and do as if you're doing a revision....all will be fine:)....
keep it up:)

I've forgotten which component is under which paper, but here goes.
For listening, you need to be familiar with English. Reading alone wouldn't help much if you don't get the pronunciation right. Listen more to English news, radio stations, or just watch more English TV programs would help. Also, you need to be able to process the information heard, so it's not just about listening, but understanding.
For speaking, I can't possibly give a lot of methods here because for me, since my first language is English and I've been public speaking and debating since Form Four, speaking in English comes naturally to me. But the thing is, ideas are important. Within the preparation time, organize your ideas so that it is smooth flowing. Try to understand the ideas and not memorize them, as with understanding, one could build a ten minute speech if required to.
For comprehension, that is a test of understanding. It's something like listening, but it's text based. So basically, read more, try to understand what is being read instead of just reading for the sake of reading. Ask self questions, and try to answer them. Be analytical about the things read, and all should be fine.
For writing, ideas are required, so read more and keep up to date with current issues help a lot. Also, practise organization of ideas, be analytical, and try to see that the analysis interconnects with each other. Put that into writing, and it should be fine.

Perhaps a good way to start would be to type in full English, rather than short form. That would enable you to ensure that your spellings are correct.
Other ReComers could help point out your errors too, if you want. You can just mention it when you post.
Another way would be to read as widely as you can. Read on any topic that you have some interest in. Try to grasp the understanding, and also try to write more often. You could practice it by reading many of the postings here in ReCom too, and post more often in many different topics. That would help you in your learning of English language.
Moreover, try to get some of your friends to speak with you. Speaking frequently in the language would help build up your language command. Fluency would come gradually.
All the best~! Post your questions here in ReCom~! Yeah, by the way, sign up as a ReCom member too~!

Out of topic but I had a real effed up experience with MUET. I got a Band 5, just one point shy of Band 6. But that wasn't the thing that irked me. What irked me was that my examiner for the speaking test couldn't speak proper English, apparently. When I left the exam hall my English teacher came up to me and said "good luck girl - your examiner just now can't speak English for nuts".
What happened after that? I got perfect score for the objectiev paper and listening test - lousy marks for oral (highest in my school) and lousy grade for writing (highest in my school as well).
To add salt to injury? My friends in other school whom I know to be less proficient in English compared to myself got Band 6.
Gah.
mine was marking his tuition papers all the way while we are sitting for our oral test..ah well...

sorry to hear the situation as explained by balderdash and wawa. How about the experience of others?
This kind of situation merits serious concern.

Jeszz87,
1. To improve your writing skills, you don't really have to rely altogether on composition books. Those are just examples on how essays can be written and how points can be elaborated and put into paragraphs. Well, in my opinion, you have to read more articles, newspapers, magazines or books in English, so that you get used to how words are strung into phrases and then sentences. You will get used to the flow of English sentences after a while.
2. Not necessarily different methods for different stages. Just choose the one which works best for you and that you are most comfortable with. Past year questions? Yeah, practise with them if you can find any. The style for examination questions is almost the same every year.
4. Idioms. You lose nothing knowing more right? You can quote some in your essays when necessary and impress the examiner.

yeah, i agree with that, there's actually no need to buys all those composition books just for the sake of improving your english, although you may improve, the money's not worth it...you may just as well go buy items which i have stated in my earlier post here...anyway..good luck to you who are takin the exam later on:)

From what i know that MUET exam is held twice a year....once in April and another once in october....(correct me if i'm wrong)... I have a question here: shall i sign up to be a private candidate for MUET for this coming October session?? My english is not that fantastic(perhaps i can say it's quite poor) but i would like to sign up for it earlier....the reasons i want to sign up early is:
1. Can gain experience in that exam
2. If i'm not lucky enough, i got a lousy topic for the speaking and ended up with a poor grade then i will still have a second chance & third chance when i am in upper 6.
3. If i'm lucky enough, i got a good grade then i will have one subject less to worry in upper 6.... can truly concentrate on other subjects....you know one subject less means you will have a lighter burden...
Anyone...can give me some idea??

I understand that there are altogether 4 candidates in 1 group. Wut if the other 2 or 3 do not turn up, will the oral test still go on?

yen_05 : Why not? I took MUET while in lower 6 as well. As you said, you can gain experience. Some of my friends even took it 3 times. So, it's up to you.
shrenka : The groups will only be allocate on the day itself. So if some candidates didn't turn up, the person in the quarantine room will rearrange your group. Sometimes there are groups with 3 people only. So don't worry about it.

What did you think of this year's May MUET? Overall for me it's quite okay, with the exception of the Essay question, which I find to be terribly vague. Something along the lines of "An educated person is more mature". I seriously don't know what 'isi' to write.
isnt lower 6 2005 can take muet this coming novem\ber?how bout your opinion?isnt we can take muet for twice times??

You really should be glad that topics so open came out. I was wishing for that kind of topics (with that level of freedom), but too bad it wasn't quite so.

My teacher told me for the essays in PA, they mark according to marking schemes. So if you give a point that's not covered in the Official Ministry of Education Approved Answers (TM), you don't get your marks. This means the more general and vague the question is, the more treachrous the paper.
I don't know if MUET is held hostage to this archaic system. I hope it's not (in which case, yes, freedom, yay). If it is, I can only shake my head in disgust.

Hi,I am a new user here!nice to meet you all(concern in study)!
I am a lower six student,I will be taking the muet in october,so I have a few questions to ask you guys!
Questions:
1)Any recommend books for muet?Actually does we need to do reference books and go for tuition in order to score muet?or it is enough with the help from school teachers?
2)As I will be taking it this year,so what preparation do I need to do to obtain better result? My english standard just average! Is it reads a lot of articles and speaks more english?Any other effective ways?
3)As I haven't been through such examination, can you all please give me some ideas on what will I come across during that day(exam)? How does it carry out?
4)If I am a private candidate, how am I going to do the group presentation? Is it with strangers?
I am nervous about this muet, maybe it is my first time.I really hope to do well this year so I can concentrate in my other subjects next year!By the way,how to overcome my panic and nervous during a presentation?
Thanks to those who kindly reply!!!

IMO, if you give the examiner a good impression, you will be awarded better grade. So, never forget to greet your examiners and smile to him. Be polite, humble , keep eye contact like you fall in love with the examiners.......
If the examiners like you (so there is always an advantage for being good looking), you will be awarded Band 6 instead of 259 marks.
Anyone disagree???

The 29 April muet exam is listening only? Or added with writing, compre? N when we will know i am going to which day speaking test. I am quite anxious about my speaking test and i want to know who i will grouped with during the speaking test.
for me.the way i improve my english (still in the process) is by to read ,speak ,listen (n understand it) ,and write a lot.
but u will not get the result in just two days.its a long-time learning. alot just get bored in the middle and give up.
but if ur interest an passion triumph over that bad feelings, anything is nothing.
