China used to be called a sleeping giant. Now, as the world's fastest growing major economy, it is often called a waking giant.
In this view of China, what is happening now is a steady build-up of Chinese economic power backed up by increasing military strength, all designed to enable it to resume its role and to make up for the humiliations of the past.
It is now 25 years since China started reforming its economy and opening to the world. During that time it has been transformed from a poor and introspective communist backwater, to one of the world's most important economies
Goods made in China now fill every Western household. China's need for raw materials to feed its economic growth have forced it to scout places like South America and Africa for new suppliers
In short, for the first time in modern history, China's development has an impact on people all around the world.

To put it simple, cheap labour, huge market, undervalued currency - that's why they matter so much. A lot of companies around the world outsource their production there, and it's only logical that they keep an eye at the regional economy and geopolitical situation.

China is nicknamed the factory of the world...
However, the Germans are afraid to buy goods from China.
Sometimes I see stuffs in Germany labelled NOT FROM CHINA
esp. bicycle parts.

are they really afraid... or they are trying to make China-made goods appear inferior??
actually more like they are trying to use their reputation to their advantage... like german made bike parts are good... and VERY expensive...

Nope.
It is Germans attitude.
Germans want to use only good quality, durable things.
?
I think they have bad experience of using non-lasting cheap quality China goods. (sorry, that?s Germans?attitude)
It has nothing to do with making China look inferior..
The problem is with the quality of China goods.

good idea... but i think if u can convince china men(if u do notice, most of them don't) to use hair wax/hair cream or hair gel, then, and export lots of these hair products to China, u can really earn a lot, and improve our country's palm oil sale too...
if u do become rich by doing so, remember me for the idea :P...

Unless your toothbrush factory is in India, Bangladesh or Indonesia, I don't think you can come close to matching the average total cost of a toothbrush manufactured in China. And since their cost is so cheap, they'll outsell yours for sure. :D
Because china is our(chinese) beloved motherland. We cannot forget where we were, where we belongs and where we came from and therefore, china matters alot , to me at least.
Moderator Action: The debate about the "motherland" is moved to this thread (http://recom.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2705). For this thread please stick to the topic. Thanks.

I was in China for 3 weeks last year, visiting a number of places over there, from Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Panyu, Huadu, Xian, Yangling, Shanghai, Suzhou, Beijing and Tianjin.
In overall, I would say that I see a number of positive changes over there, however they have a number of essential issues to deal with.
The first and foremost would be the energy crisis in Shanghai. I am not sure how is the situation over there now, but when I went over in July 2004, the situation was horrible. The city was not lighted at the night, and the factories had to close down 1 day per week, i.e. being able to work on 4-day week etc. In many of the discussions with government officials there, they are trying to solve this problem, but it is not going to be possible in the short run. Energy demand has grown beyond control, especially with the fast growth in that region and energy supply is not catching up fast enough and they just can't produce energy over night.
Another issue to deal with, which we in Malaysia, may be facing is that in China, in particular over at Shanghai area, the infrastructure is modern, but the people are still with the 3rd world mentality. Some of them may be wearing coat etc, but their attitude and behavior are still like 3rd world. You see a lot of problems that we see in 3rd world nation, like littering, vandalisme etc. There is a lot to catch up, and it is precisely the problem that we are facing back home too.
And another issue would be about the greater and greater income disparity. To those who study economics, the Gini coefficient would be more like 0.5 over in China. That's very hard, judging that in 1980s, it was more like 0.33 or so. Like it or not, 60-70% of China's population are living in rural area and spend most of their time on farming. That's still the main job over in China and industrialization is mainly happening around the Coastal region and perhaps around the Pearl Delta Region and also Yangtze Delta region. Another area of industrialization would be where the railway passes by in the central part of China, but pretty much majority of area in China is still plagued by poverty. The policy of tickle down from more developed area is not doing so well, and we still see areas like Shenzhen and Shanghai being prosperous, about per capita of USD5000, whereas a lot of other areas in China, per capita is way below USD1000.
Having said that, I have seen a lot of young and promising government officers over at China. During my dealings with them, many of them are very well-educated and also more importantly, they are very open-minded.
I am grateful to get the opportunities to spend 3 weeks there, with students from over 90 universities, and completely sponsored by China and Hong Kong government. This year, a few other Recomers are going down too, Yi Duan, Sui Lin and Yan-Min. It would be great if some more ReComers could apply for it. http://www.chinasynergy.org.hk .Anyone studying at any university could apply. It would be a good way to get to know China from a closer perspectives.

Why China matters?
Because of only one reason : There are a billion people and it's birth rate is still higher than US. Bummer.
other reason : china has a potential strength in military and economy to balance out the unilateral world created by the arrogant US. many countries invest in china for this purpose (hehe...just my speculation) making china stronger faster so that they don't always have to say "yes" to everything the US said. by the way, i really hate this statement from george w. bush
" be with us or against us "
he sounded like darth vader in star wars movies. damn it. may be we should really train some of the osama laden's guys to become jedi to fight him....
