just wanna know am I the only crazy person who tortures his/her laptop/ desktop...

So, how many hours does ur computer is running a week...(not off or on standby)

Virtually, my laptop runs 24/7... sometimes, after like 10 days or more, i feel bad about it and will switch it off for about 1-2 hours... and then, let it run for another 10 days...

how about u guys??

I did that too and I have to send my laptop for repairing...
I waited for 2 months to get back my laptop..

The tech. people have to change a new motherboard and hard disk for me..

it is free of charge as it is under guarantee.

I think we should shut off our laptop max. once in 3 days...
I do that daily nowadays...

my desktop has been alive since, emmm, jurassic period?

There were a number of reboots but the powerline is always connected.

My longest streak: 27 days.

Switching it off daily is still OK. But don't do it if you use your laptop in short bursts. And switch it off after every use. The heating and cooling down of the internals will reduce its lifespan.

not using laptop.. using a personal computer

my computer is sharing between my two younger brothers and I...so... it's quite busy working too.

:D erm... my pc 'sleep' not more than 24hours sometimes in a week... but I vote for around 50..hahah...

why huh? because my brothers use it to run some programmes that help to 'leveling for online game'...haha..it's kinda cheating.
if you don't understand it.. just forget it

Same here. I used to even leave my lappie on overnight.
Let's just say I learnt it the hard way that it's no way to treat a laptop.

I leave it on 24/7 too. Omg...will it explode!? It folds protein when I go to bed....also when I go to classes....that's why it's on all the time.

Must switch it off tonight...

Is it true that switching PC/laptop on and off will damage them?

I never let my PC running when it is not in use... But I use it quite often a day...

i think the sudden change in temperature when you switch it on does put a strain on the small moving parts of the PC/laptop.

while we are on the topic, I want to ask for opinion here. I have an external 200GB harddisk and it's very precious to me. Lot's of MP3s, anime, manga bla bla (RIAA, please don't sue me  ) ... sometimes I think about making it internal, i.e putting it into the CPU casing but the thought of having it roasted always stops me from doing so. What do you guys think? Am I too paranoid or is leaving it as an external really a smart choice (since I can turn it off when it's hot etc etc)?

btw, my Shuttle XPC is 24/7 on except during the time I'm away from the room for a long time (weekend trips etc)

I don't know why, but if I swtich off the main cable power supply to the CPU(desktop) it goes crazy. After that, if i switch it on, it goes bonkers, just lines and lines (abit like matrix) :P appear on the screen. Will have to restart like half a dozen times before it returns to 'normal'. Since then, I always leave the cables 'on'. :?: :?: Why does that happen?

leave it external - i suppose you have a case for it/you left it 'naked' with all the cables around it? It's more convenient that way, but perhaps a bit slow if connected to USB.

Think i read it somewhere b4, the advice is to leave your desktop on 24/7 except for monitors...and for laptops switch off once you're done...think this is because of the way the things are built, laptops are more compact and thus most parts might overheat and cause fatigue/creep to the materials and eventually lead to failure...

hmm..try to disconnect things that is not essential for you to work with your computer (second hard disk, sound card...etc) and then start your windows...if it starts normally, then your power supply unit have to be changed...

if that doesn't work, try to borrow a video card from a fren and then try in on your pc...

guess wat.... my laptop just died... after abt 2 years of torturing...

i was updating my blog, and was downloading stuffs... then, suddenly, it BSOD'ed... and next thing i know, i try rebooting it, but it just won't, and the hard drive was kinda slightly louder than normal... tried chucking in the recovery disk into it, but, it just wouldn't work.. no pulse, no sign of life... dang...

i think that's it... going to send it back to Malaysia and have it repair and chuck it to my bro... haha.. alas, i'm handing something to my elder brother... enough of hand it down stuffs...

one question, anybody here using a Mac Mini?? i planning to get one...

so, maybe it's not a good idea to on ur laptop for long hours...(but surprisingly, i've been switching my laptop more often than usual for the past 2 weeks) because of moving around much and all...

what do you think of stanby mode?

does the laptop "sleep" or the CPU is still running?

I don't think so.

Typically your computer will be outdated before it actually dies. A typical chip these days can burn non-stop for 5 to 10 years. So even if you leave it on for 2 to 3 years, which is typical of some of my boxes e.g. those that serves internet traffic, there wouldn't be any difference.

You'll damage your laptop if you put it in your bag and go mountain biking with it together. Slamming the lid, jerking it during standby (not hibernate, i.e. when the harddisk head is still on the disk and not parked) etc. shorten your laptop's life a lot more than powering it up and down.

Powering up and down is usually just an unconvinient thing. Why should your laptop / PC take longer than your TV to start working?
