View Full Version : Man or woman, who is the bigger shopper?

I know this will create a great contreversy in the forum.. That's what I want anyway, *LOL*. Honestly, who is the bigger shopper?

Woman - who shops frequently by buying cheaper stuff, such as their clothes, make-ups and mainly stuff related to grooming.

Man - who shops rarely by buying expensive gadgets such as guitars, amps, video games, huge tv screens and anything considered gadgets to them.

Any ideas?

I have ever heard someone gave a description against man/woman for their purchasing attitude:

Man will purchase a bottle of tomato source with $10 even normal price is only $1, when they need that tomato source.

Woman will purchase a 1-dozen-box of tomato source with $0.50 each as the normal price is $1, even they don't need that tomato source.

I don't know how to compare which one "bigger" but both parties have their own point of view. For man, as long as I need it, that item will help me to solve my current need, no matter how much is the price (of course have some limitation), I will purchase it. But for woman, when they found something which they know it is much more cheaper than the normal price, maybe they don't need it at this moment... but they will keep it when they need it, or rather give to others who need it.

If you really talk about expenses, well... among all the men and women, there are also a lot of people who like to buy things just for the sake of buying, right? This is not depending on the sex of that particular human but it is simply due to the attitude problem after all

i think we need a statistic to figure this one out. i'll find some stats about this after my stats exam tomorrow.

But HAH! girls! we dont need a stats to figure this one out! it must be girls! and i gladly admit that im a chauvanist in this issue

it depends how u define "shopper" first.

if u define shopper as those who shop around for the whole day without buying anything then definitely girls are the bigger shopper. (i think even girls will agree with me, right?)

but if u define shopper as those who spend in shopping then guys win. for guys, we go shopping because we need to buy something not just for the sake of shopping. we rather spend time playing games or sports. that's the average guys and of course there's some exception.

not related to shopping but was a research I read awhile ago regarding male/female habits.

Researchers wanted to test which sex was the more vain so they set up a two way mirror on the side of a sidewalk. Then they set camp and counted how many times each sex stopped to look and admire themselves in the mirror. The winner?

The male sex!!!

What does that say? Men know how to look good nowadays!?!??

eheheh...

first of all, bigger shopper here, i assume, related to the bigger amount of money they spent when they shop. i didn't consider browsing through things you like in shopping mall like women usually do as shopping.

women love to shop but the things they bought are not that costly as compared to things that guys bought. i somewhat agree that guys are willing to spend a lot on the things they 'think' they need.. for example, why buy a plasma tv when you already have a tv?

the newest and coolest gadget is very expensive and yet guys spent a lot of money to get them.. so guys are a bigger shopper than girls..

just my opinion... :) cheers..

beg to terribly differ by a distance of a light-year.
i could easily find the opposite.

but then, it's only fair to assume it depends on the individual (reads the amount of wealth), not on the gender.

very interesting littlebigone. i actually learned something from my intro to anthro class not so long ago. my anthro professor (who is indeed a man) did argue in class about which gender is more showy. he thinks that men are more showy because they like show off the stuff they have. for instance, they want nice cars and cool gadgets to show off the opposite gender. women do like to groom but they don't necessarily do that to show off the opposite gender. but this is very subjective and it's just his opinion, i sort of agree with him anyway.. *LOL*

Heheh...shopping?

Guy: Drives to Best Buy, goes straight to the item he's interested in, checks it out, exits immediately when he's done. Buys it online for a better deal.

Total shopping time: 1 hour.

Gal: Goes to a shop, scrutinizes every piece of clothing/accessory/whatever, tries on something she thinks she likes, decides she doesn't like it after all, tries another one. Repeat 10 times. Goes on to another store. Repeat 20 times. Finally ends up with 2 bags of stuff.

Total shopping time: 6 hours.

hmm...i think because guys and girls are interested in different stuff. yeah, why buy a plasma tv when u have a tv? it's different experience and better. almost the same as asking why you still buy the new comp while u have the old 486? why upgrade to win xp while u oledi have win me? why girls still buying skirts, shoes and handbags while you already have one or more?

i think some electronics stuff such as ps2, x-box and the likes are not really the industries that matter. they are more of the entertainment business that doesn't matter that much. as for make-ups and dresses, i guess they are our entertainment. hehe.. so we're even :P

women like to buy more clothes because they don't like to wear the same outfit again and again. i bet if you go out with your girlfriend, you don't wanna see the same outfit all over again right :P.. hehe..

we, guys, gamers. w00t!

Generally i think it is fair to say that Men and women are equally big spender/shopper.

Also i have to say that women buy more practical things then Men does. I could easily live without so many things i have bought. PDA, fast cars, Plasma HDTV (i only get 2 channel in HDTV-lol) IPOD? geez i havent used that for months.

I used to upgrade my Video card every 6 months, now i don't even play anything except CS, and that's like 2-3 times a week.

The worst thing is they seach the whole shop and then settle with an item they like with the prospect of buying the item so bright and yet for no apparent reason, they just put the item down and walk out of the shop...geeez...i guess this is one of the biggest puzzle of women.

Personally I think that women are bigger shopper still, as if they are married, they have to shop for household stuffs, grocery shopping, kids' clothing plus her own shopping expenditure...wow, I'm sure that will come up with paramount of amount. As for men, even if they are married, mainly they just need to shop for electrical appliances, gadgets, thier own clothing (most of the time my Mum will help my Dad to purchase his clothing as well).

SHOPPING MATH A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need.

Reagrding the aboved quote from SIG-Jokes+Wow+Interesting Articles, I think that women are meticulous in spending money (sometimes perceived as stingy from guys' perspective), they are quite good at bargaining! Fancy those housewives bargaining skills, sometimes they can get quality stuffs at cheap and reasonable price. However, there are times that cheap stuffs will have greater possibility in getting faulty products; but expensive stuffs can't guarantee perfect products as well yet the possibility is lower than cheap stuffs for sure.

Basically, i think that men and women shop equally a lot, but women spend more time on nonsense. Once my friend asked me to go shopping with his gf and his gf's friend. When we stopped by at a stationary shop, his gf and her friend started arguing whether green stapler looks nicer or the red one... and believe it or not, this process took more than 30 minutes. By that time, i'd already paid for some stuffs which I'm looking for my project ... There are more trivial things that women spend time arguing with each other while shopping, but to make the whole point short, they do not buy it in the end .... it's just a waste of time (and energy wasted on the debates)

That is an interesting question you have there. Who is the bigger shopper, men or women. In my opinion, the answer lies with how a person defines "bigger". A shopper is a person who goes out to the stores to buy something, which makes a "bigger" shopper a big shopping fan (a person who shops a lot and in turn buy more items although the items aren't necessary to be very expensive). A survey has been done lately in America and it has been found that one in four trips made by a woman is to shop which brings us to the conclusion that women are bigger shoppers compared to men (the frequency of women going shopping is much higher which means that they in turn buy more items compared to men such as cosmetics, clothings, accessories, shoes and etc.....) Moreover, women go shopping for fun (it's just like going golfing for some of the guys - it has been a way of life for the women) and they do not have a specific item to buy in mind. This means that women tend to buy more items because they buy what they see. Men on the other hand normally has something to buy in mind before going shopping which brings us to the conclusion that they'll only buy what they need and desire (for example handphones, digital cameras, pda and etc.... that they have been eyeing for quite some time). Also, men rarely hang around at shopping complexes or deparmental stores for no reason because most men can only stand shopping for 45 minutes (women can do that for a much longer period according to a test done in 2002). To sum it up, women are bigger shoppers in my opinion. In the contex of the original question, i conned up the term "expensive shopper" for the gender who buys the most expensive items. In my opinion, I think the items that men and women generally buy are equally expensive. There has been an arguement that women are more expensive shoppers because they spend a lot on cosmetics and facial wear. In this modern society, men are more and more into the usage of cosmetics and facial care too. What's more, men actually go for botox shots too which was once a woman thing. I must say that it is practical for men to buy expensive items (that is if they can afford it) such as pda's, digital cameras, expensive phones, play stations, games, hi-fi's, electric guitars and etc....) Without the men buying those stuff, there certainly wouldn't be any advancement in our technology (such as telecommunication technology, software technology, music industry technology and etc...) because there's no market. Women on the other hand tend to spend more money on accessories. Some women are inclined to buy diamond rings or neclaces which are very costly (some of which can buy us a car!) So, I would say both men and women are expensive shoppers! :D

Wow..seem like you understand the men quite well. Personally, I agree with you.Men are also avid shoppers. Sometimes their passion for shopping is greater as compare to the girls'. Well, the main reason is they take thing more serious. Every time before they shop, they will plan ahead. Therefore, whenever a man shops, he will buy a lot of stuff.
