From my interaction with my peers in the field, bio medical engineering is a very general area. Pretty much it is the application of electrical/mechanical/chemical engineering to the human body.
I willonly be able to elaborate a little bit on mechanical and electrical area and only stuff being done in my university, but will leave the rest to others who are in the area.
biomed(electrical):
- designs instrumentation for gathering data on human physical processes.
- design medicine dispensing chips in the human body.
Biomed(mechanical):
- airbag design(impact biomechanics)
- exoskeleton design for stroke rehabilitation
- design of nano body sensors to check for allergies/cholestrol levels
- modeling and monitoring of the human heart.
- design of human prosthesis
What to study? you will know when you have taken enough classes, as with all other fields. Make sure you have strong foundations in physics and math and you should be fine.
Good luck!
