Huh... and to add one another bad stuff for windows and also as a precaution for others too, this is my experience...
About a week ago i opened up the net, and soon was prompted to download updates from microsoft.com via internet explorer... since it was from microsoft.com i thought the updates should be reliable and would improve the performance of my pc... the next thing i knew was i could not even load windows (xp) the next day when i opened up my pc.... eventually , re-format was the only solution and i lost most of my files....
And that was not the first time microsoft.com has done the same thing. Previously, I downloaded updates from it and then wasn't able to fully load windows. Lucky I was able to re-install the drat OS on my own and things were back 2 normal...
So, the question is... How reliable microsoft is?? I'll never respond to updates ever again~... Aiseyman..

I don't know much about Apple, but Microsoft's maintainance and reliability level is very low. Each of Microsoft's OS seems to be plagued by many bugs. I don't know about Tiger OS. Maybe Pang Ping or other ReComers can explain further? Btw, Apple's monitors are my favourite.
PS: I just made a stupid move to switch from Microsoft Windows 98 SE and it gives me a whole world of trouble. For heaven's sakes, don't follow my footsteps.

I guess you mean, switch to Microsoft Windows 98 SE? :)

i think it's hard to compare both since the software available for each platform is different.
If you want the newest games & certain software like CAD, you have no choice but to use Windows XP. There could be problems in your computer which could have triggered the 'crash'. If you've installed the necessary security measures, your computer should be fine.
A few more advanced tips to improve XP:
http://www.maximumpc.com/2004/01/the_best_reader.html
Anyway, Tiger OS X is a very good OS from what I've heard - with many cool tools (e.g. Quicksilver, Garageband, etc). Anyway, i think if you use your comp mainly for surfing & doing homework on MS Office, definitely consider OS X....but probably buy it later when the ones running on Intel comes out.
Consider Linux too, almost every software's free & it's superstable for programming.

No offence or anything, but is your OS original? A pirated copy could promt an error.
I'm just assuming.
maybe you downloaded a service pack? that's always fun. i saw a mac mini the other day, and i was shocked. i sorta knew it was supposed to be small, but not THAT small.
i bought my 15" PB 6.5months ago
i gotta tell ya its worth every penny
i laugh at my friends when their pc / laptop fails infront of them
my pb has been dropped twice and its still sturdy and scratch free
yea it might be a few hundred bucks more but trust me its worth it
the switch from pc - mac was a smooth ride easy transition for those that are concerned
yea there are a few programs that you can't get on a mac but the ones u can they're a lot better.
everything is a touch away in the mac world.
i have yet to get the tiger osx tho
but panther is kicking enough @<hidden>
be a part of hte mac family.

A mac's interface is much more appealing to the eye as compared to windows. Not to mention Apple's creative way of presenting their products (think iPod), which not only looks good, but works well too!
The only down side is that Apple's products tend to be more pricey and less ...err.. illegitimate software (you know what I mean) to go with it.
I guess that's what holding the malaysian society back from using macs.

The price factor is one of the major reason. I was told that most modems equipped with windows computers are winmodems which are not pure modems. Erm, can we link up windows and macs on the same hub for internet sharing? Any specific changes we need to do?

IMO with Mac mini and iBook, price is not a big factor anymore.
I don't think there's any problem sharing internet between both of them.
Some people are afraid to use Mac bcause they are not familiar to it. There used to be too few softwares (and games) can be run on Mac.. well not anymore! Mac can do almost everything a windows can do (and a even more)
You can also use windows on Mac by running virtual PC.
I'll be bias since i'm using Mac =)

AFAIK, yeah there's no problem to connect to a hub to share net connection, no special thingamajig to do. not too sure about file and printer sharing though. experts?

it's true its true.
It's like, whenever I want to play something, like civ, i have to get civ for mac instead of civ. bah!
many ppl i know consider switching to mac for the unix-core, and the eye-candies are just bonuses.
i should also mention, many ppl i know use dual-boot linux for serious programming, and windows for office productivity and gaming.

i think you can also do that with your computers..there should be tools within Mac to help out with the task:)
and Microsoft's maintainance's bad?? i wouldn't say that, cz microsoft's the only software company that can regularly post updates so that their users are protected from viruses..hehe...but seriously, a software as big as windows can't be ever error free..and btw, if you do read online, linux actually have more security holes than windows and mac..its just that linux's not a big targer for hackers bacause of its small user base...
About a week ago i opened up the net, and soon was prompted to download updates from microsoft.com via internet explorer... since it was from microsoft.com i thought the updates should be reliable and would improve the performance of my pc... the next thing i knew was i could not even load windows (xp) the next day when i opened up my pc.... eventually , re-format was the only solution and i lost most of my files....
please...if some pop-ups ask you to install anything, including from the purpoted microsoft update site, do yourself a favour and close it...get to the official microsoft update site by using the start -programs-windows update button to see for yourseft if your computer does need to be updates...use that instead, rather than responding to pop-ups from internet explorer, because hackers can spoof the source website...
a little more work can do wonders keeping your computer virus free...adn do yourself justice here..don't use internet explorer until version 7 comes out in a few months...try alternative ones like firefox or opera..they are much safer to use:)..
hope that helps..c'ya
p/s : according to the reviews of mac osX 10.4 (tiger), its laden with bugs..its cool, i must admit..but i'll wait a little longer to see if apple can make it more stable first:p[/b]

about window, it is recomended not to update, the update SUCKS!!! because when i update my SP1 to SP2, my network connection fails, what do you think, do you think that stupid? so i recommended not to update, if you told me to update, i rather install anti-virus and other program...

that won;t protect you from viruses at all...system updates are designed to help patch up holes that crackers can use to exploit your system...
networking fails?? haha..something's obviously wrong, how about setting it up all over again??...hmm..for me, i'd rather have a little inconvenience to protect my system from attacks...it only involves a little work, butit's worth the effort... :)

I will be getting an ibook G4 soon.
Hopefully, I will get to lead the Apple SIG (read: Microsoft hater's club).

I'm wondering which is the best OS for an old machine? Something which houses less than 1GHz of clock speed, less than the standard 128MB of RAM and less than lets say 20GB of hard disk space.
As time passes, more OSes are getting better and better, and their requirements climb higher and higher. I'm hoping for one good OS and I'm going to stick with that. Be it Windows or Linux. Why not a Mac someone asked? Well because 'old' machines don't have DVD drives yet. (I heard the OSx86 comes in dvd iso)

redhat 7 if you can find it..

Fedora Core 2, its free.

Er, must it be Fedora 2? Because they have Fedora 4 on their webpage. Are there any major difference between 2 and 4?
Fedora is the free version of RedHat isn't it? So should I get RedHat instead of Fedora?
I found another distribution: Zenwalk Linux (formerly Minislack). Anyone have any idea how it fared? Heh, I'm just attracted to its name.

Core 2 is more stable. Core 4 has some issues with VIA graphics drivers...unless u want to do a full text install.

Okay, I found Fedora Core 2 (Tettnang) and Redhat 7.3 (Valhalla).
And Third, will a Redhat 7.3 be okay or must I look for 7?
Found both distributions on linuxiso:
http://linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=64
http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=7
Oh no, http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/fc2/x86/ says that I'll need more RAM than I can offer:
Minimum for text-mode: 64MB
Minimum for graphical: 192MB
Recommended for graphical: 256MB
Shoots...looks like I'll have to get something else.
