what do you mean by changing streams from arts to science? If you were formerly an arts student for SPM, nope you can't change to science. I was an Arts student and my combi was PA, Econs, Literature in English and Math (the syllabus for arts). PA was compulsory, Econs is cool as long as you know your stuff, Literature of English wasn't offered in any Ipoh school so I had private tutoring twice a week (heard only less than 50 students take it each year throughout Malaysia) while it would be advantageous to have SPM Add math to take STPM math.
Other subjects commonly offered would be Accounts, Malay Language, Chinese Language, History, Pengajian Perniagaan...hehe and I am not too sure what else :)
Whether it is true that Arts students need better results compared to Science students to get into uni.....I am not sure. I had 2As and 2Bs and I got my first choice UM (in which I stayed only 2.5 days). Then again, you'd have to understand I chose a course that probably no one else wanted - Sastera (English). My other friends who had no As all got their first choices either in USM/UUM - for courses like Mass Comm and Management and Accounts. On the other hand, many of my friends in Science stream couldn't get their first choice.
But it's your call ultimately - where does your interests lie?

I'm formerly a science student, but maybe result are too bad to get in science so my name appear in art in the f6 list...i'm thinking of appeal for science.
So what is the Literature English all about? sound interesting..from what i know from my friends, they said that PA and Malay is compulsary, then the rest is like u said, got Account, Pengajian Perniagaan, seni, geo and Ecco.
Y just stayed for 2.5 days??
I wish to take architecture.

Really?? Malay language is compulsory in STPM for humanities stream?? From what i know, PA is compulsory in both streams but i do not think that Malay language is compulsory in humanities stream. Btw, Mathematic S is also offered to students in art stream. :D ...Did you take up extra subjects in SPM....like principle of account or art??

Literature in English is indeed interesting but it would be recommended that you have a good grasp of English in order to do this subject. also, check with your school whether they offer it or if they don't...ask around in your town to see if private tutoring is available. For my year, Paper 1 was Critical Appreciation (commonly known as practical criticism) - where they give you an unseen piece of prose and poetry to do prac crit on. Paper 2 is British Lit....depends on what your teacher (or you!) choose to do....I did Austen's Emma and Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience and something else ahha I don't remember. Paper 3 is World Literatures in English- I did African lit (The River Between), Indian Lit (The Painter of Signs) and Malaysian lit (The Return). I loved studying for it but as I've said, it's ultimately your call.

Malay is NOT compulsory. Your friends probably thought it was compulsory because your school offered the combination with included BM.

I got an offer from NUS to do Arts. And I couldn't stand the hostel. Sorry la, I quite xiao jie hehe....
And to yen_05: yeah the math for arts stream is called Math S....that's the one that I did....all the Stats.....ARGH....

my heart broke into pieces when i heard 18 marks..bcoz i got 19!!
and also..art stream's subject are teaches in Malay?? would it be a large different with science which teaches in English?

I was a triple Science+Add math SPM student - already had 10 subjects and back then nobody took more than 10/11 subjects...restrictions I think. My sciences sucked but I think I had 12 points for my triple sciences but there was no way I was ever going to do sciences again. I had an aggregate of 9 for SPM overall and decided to put it to good(?) use in arts :)
I don't understand what you mean by it being different from science stream which is taught in English. As far as I know, only Math and Science are in English. So shouldn't be a problem I figure.

I would like to clarify that only PA is the compulsory subject in STPM. Other than that you can choose for urself. Perhaps ur school required all the art stream students to take BM. Well in my school, all the art class students have to take Econ and all the science class students have to take chemistry. So if you in art stream and don't wish to take econ in my school, you have to switch school. My school does not allow students from Art stream change to Science stream while they do allow students from Science stream to change to Art stream. So basically i think art stream students can't change to science stream but again, it depends on ur school. Try to appeal man :)

english lit is not as easy as u think.. it's very deep. anyway, the subjects offered are solely based on the school's discretion. but of course u can take additional subjects :D

hey guys,
what about science/arts after stpm? i'm not sure about what i'm interested in. i've been asking ppl about economics n business but, i only get a simple idea of what isit about. how do i find out more about em? i mean, how am i supposed to know if i like these art subjects more? and how do i know if they'll suite me? like, accounts, economics, law?
actually, i dont find any trouble dealing with science subjects. maybe because i'm only entering form6 this yr. so, it's just the beginning. ppl are telling me that arts is a lot easier than science. is it really so? i mean, if u want to excel, u have to work hard on either side right? i dont really think accounts will be easy, u gotta study ur part as well.
the point is, i'm lost! i've been thinking, like forever, and there's still no asnwer. to get a simple life, as in, the 'safer road' , i can choose to study pharmacy. but, i if i want to be risky, i can choose things like law+econs/ commerce..then i work my way up. but, what if i fail? i cant bear to think of that. ok, i'm a coward but..i am la.
so, can u ppl give some advices? u pros..

audrey girl,
safer road? looks like you already know where you wanna go and what you wanna do in your future. if that's the case, why bother to ask anymore? im not trying to be sarcastic but i dont think that becoming a pharmacist would lead u to a 'simple life' as what you thought. (i'll leave this those who are studying sci to comment :P )
i dont agree with you on arts stream is easier and what not. How do you know? you dont listen to your friends or whoever who said it. If you don't study consistently, i can tell you that you'll feel like banging your head to the wall when u r left only days to take on the papers. trust me. it's not that easy.
personally, i think that you've already found your niche. Go for sci stream gal since you can do it. Don't be influenced by what other people say. They might say that it's easy but what are their results like?

stevemc90, i am not saying that arts is easier. i said, that's what ppl say but i think that we have to work hard on either side if we want to excel. if u're not arts-orientated kinda person, u'll definately commit suicide if u simply enroll urself into some subject u find facinating.
anyway, thanks. i'm just some confused fella in here. errr..btw, no 'audrey girl' stuff yeah~ :x

today I just attended the 'taklimat's given by teachers in form 6 first day.
From what I heard from my teacher, like what you said also, the total agregat of 3 science subjects is 18. So, in your case, since yours exceeded 18, you are placed in art stream.
But as long as you are confident that you can cope with the science subjects, you still have the chance to apply to change to science stream. They still can consider it.
However, the most important is, which stream you are more interested in? What's the most suitable subjects to be taken that useful to your future career ?
however, I got a friend that get 9As 2Bs wanted to change to art stream. Teacher told us today that it's hard to change since the government now encouraging students to study science, as want to be more advanced in science and technology, to reach the target : to become an advanced country by year 2020
however, as long as one has convincing reason why he wants to change to art stream such as for the job, e.g: my friend wants to be a lawyer, so ... can't force her to study science right? hehe..

Heh. I switched from Science stream to Arts stream last year. Was a bit of a headache (had to go all the way to the State Edu Dept) because of my 11 A's.
Arts is rather tough as well. We've two papers for our electives, and each paper covers different topics. So instead of studying, say 3 subjects, we sorta study 6. (Eg. Econs--Microecons and Macroecons.)
I'm doing Econs, Math S and Business Studies, btw. ;)

I have a friend who also obtained 11 A's. But the teachers in my school allowed her to change to art stream without goin to PPD. Her application is being approved in the period of one day only.

i have thoughts of changing to arts as i fear that i might not be able to cope science.I've been told that i have to study science for a month before being able to change to arts stream. So in the mean time i've to study it.By the way i'm taking up physic. Is it true that you will stand a better chance of getting into uni if you go to science :?: meaning you can still apply for art courses and science and will still get art courses :? I was also told that taking up physic is better than bio 'cos the competition is not that high compared to bio.Besides it is easier to get courses for physic eventhough you get 2As 2Bs only. For bio all As.Can someone help me ?Thanks.
Which easier physic or bio :?: They say bio have wider oppurtunities than physic.
I think each subject has their tough part, however the art students are always being labeled as'poor students'.So unfair, because the schools in Malaysia nowadays always push the unqualified students to art stream. When u study science stream, everybody seems like respect u and if u study art stream, immediately they thought u as bad students.I tried to transfer to art stream in F4 but actually cannot bear the study enviroment. The students are talking n screaming while some of the teachers are pulling their face down, totally lacking enthusiasism to teach.I went back to sci stream as the teachers say i can always transfer back to art in F6.Now,i want to to transfer to art but all the teachers are bewildered:What!U get 11 A's n u want to study art? When the art students will finally earned the respect belonged to them?
I think the most important of all is still about ur interest. There is no such things as getting higher oppurnity to enter uni by studying sci.If u are interested in art ,study art n vice versa.U will always do ur best when u r doing something u like.Sci might have wide selection of courses in uni, however under the goverment dasar, there r so many students study sci,n the art courses always give priority to art students first including law.i have thoughts of changing to arts as i fear that i might not be able to cope science.I've been told that i have to study science for a month before being able to change to arts stream. So in the mean time i've to study it.By the way i'm taking up physic. Is it true that you will stand a better chance of getting into uni if you go to science :?: meaning you can still apply for art courses and science and will still get art courses :?
