which colour combination is harmonious and which combinations are taboo?

I heard we are adviced to wear clothes fewer than 3 colours, if we are not good at colour combination.

is it true? i haven't heard this before.

i had learned in art that the three basic colours are red, yellow and blue.
i think what i had learned in art was not related with what iQing said about. :P

Black goes with anything and everything. Right?

Not necessarily. You'll have to take into consideration the texture of the fabric as well. And even black has different shades sometimes. Sounds weird but really.

Sometimes it depends on the shade of the particular colour. For example, light blue with dark red is awful but dark blue with bright red is nice.

Black with dark purple isn't that good to me, depends on the shade.

light khaki pants goes with just about anything dark. Basically any light-dark combination should work. And about black, you also need to consider your skin colour. Black and dark brown isn't exactly a nice combination. Makes people look like sakai or something. Point is, it doesn't look good.

I think it looks all fine though.

Depends on your skin tone, if you're dark, you'll blend into shadows.

I think white works with bright colours. For example:

White and red

White and orange

White and yellow

White and limegreen

These only work in one piece, either top or bottom(preferably top)

I feel a person who has tanned skin should wear more white...

an episode of "the nanny" where fran is finally getting married, and she and her mum are in the bridal shop. the shop assistant has a black wedding gown prepared for her, and the mum protested saying :"my daughter is getting married! she cannot wear black! she has to wear white to look like a virgin!"

lol

Lol...I guess white represents purity...that is what I always believe though it might sound crappy and weird. As the Malays always say..."Putih itu suci".Perhaps, white makes a person look more innocent...
Anyway, we cannot judge a person from their outer appearance because looks might be deceiving. As the saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover".

In my point of view , these colours go well together
>> black + white ( that's the classic ~~)
>> black + red
>> purple + black
>> bright pink + blue
>> white + blue
>> teal + yellow
..........

People are more open to accept more colour combinations nowaday......what do you think is the weirdest colour combination ?

Yellow and purple. It sounds weird, and whenever I try to imagine it in my mind it has always felt weird to be honest.

But that changed when I saw this absolutely gorgeous gold and plum sundress at Dorothy Perkins. http://media.dorothyperkins.com/wcsstore/DorothyPerkins//images/catalog/07105941_normal.jpg

The fact that it was 25% of its original price made it look even prettier IMO! 10 pounds as opposed to 40 pounds...it was love at first sight.

So I guess the moral of the story is...even if a combination of colours sounds strange when you picture it, it might not necessarily be so, depending on the actual garment. So keep your mind open!

---------------------------

With that said, however, yeah, always stick to three primary colours, regardless of how well you pick your colours. Even if you're a colour pro, it's always more pleasing on the eyes if you don't exceed three, IMO. Of course, highly colourful tops may look good, but make sure your pants/skirt and shoes are a bit more subtle. Vice versa if you're wearing a colourful floral skirt for example.

I think all colors go well with one another if you mix them correctly. The example if the yellow/purple combination. Purple and Yellow is directly opposite one another in the color wheel and they are contrasting color. Yet if you make it milder by adding white in it, the dress still turn out to be all right. Color is such a flexible thing that it is kind of hard to find a combination that won't work at all. Especially if you have 3 colors. =D

Black clothes can give an impression of a slim figure.
And yes, I agree white goes with bright colours. ;)

Anyway, latest trend now appears to be "colour block"ing. In which you wear two bold and clashing colours. Examples include deep blue and black.

The style's a bit loud for me, but I guess it doesn't necessarily look awful if worn with confidence.

Hmm, i once witness a friend of mine (girl) who criticised another friend (guy) about the colour combo. According to her, the pants/skirt should contrast with the top. (eg one light colour the other dark) At that time my friend (who was being criticised) was wearing dark pants with a dark shirt...so in your opinion which one better?

p/s : i always thought top and bottom should match whether light coloured or not

It's ok actually, just the sight effect, too dark I think. :amuse

Anyway, I think the contrast in colour is better, weither light colour at top and dark color at bottom and vice versa.
