Why worry about what's going to come out?

Study everything, understand them, memorize if necessary, and you'll do fine. I personally didn't rely on any rumours on possible questions during my days.

I agree with gohweihan here. This trend of question/topic spotting isn't healthy. Indeed, it can be downright dangerous as you might tend to focus too much on certain topics and neglect the others.

But if you must, I suggest a quick review of the distribution of topics for past year questions. You can easily see the trends and patterns from there and expect what to see in your question paper come November. Be warned however, that the trend might follow on or be bucked, so like I said, it's dangerous to rely too much on it.

The idea for not spotting is both practical and psychological. When you claim you study on your own, I'd assume that the pressure should be greater than that of normal students who have their teachers to guide them.

Inherent fears would be greater probably in your case, thus it is more dangerous to spot questions. With this fear, there is a tendency to cling on to what's given, no matter if it's true or otherwise. That is why I said don't spot any questions. Trends, maybe, but no specific topics.

My principle is also to not spot questions. I even choose to ignore the 'tips' given by teachers for the school exam, while everbody I know immediately bring out their pens and pencils and make detailed notes on the topics they need to 'focus' on. C'mon, STPM is an examination on the whole syllabus, not specific portions of it.

I was vindicated, when the physics paper I sat for today contained several questions from chapters the teacher didn't (or forgot to) mention. My classmates are quite pissed, but, "I told you so." Let's hope they've learnt a lesson.

If you are doing self-study, think it's better to not spot questions, but skip topics you don't know how to do. This is a dangerous suggestion though, because some topics are interconnected (circular motion, SHM). But if you think a particular topic to be out of your grasp, and you feel that by neglecting it, you will be able to make time for the other topics, then you can choose to do so. Be very careful though.

ya, we shouldn't spot question in exam, we do not take the exam to score but to learn..but exam is a great way of making us discipline to learn constantly and systematically.

Whoa, you guys don't spot questions? so good wan.

For spm, 'spoting' is rampant in my school. IMO, if we are able to understand and consolidate the chapters well, spoting is okay, why not? gimme a reason.

I beg to differ, zqax. exam doesn't make learning fun, instead it stifled learning. Exam sucks. However, it does serve as a yardstick to check on our learning progress, but if there's exam every few days, brr.r.....

Two reasons. First, spot questions but fear it doesn't come out - so study everything in the syllabus. This makes spotting redundant.

Second. Spot questions and focus on those spotted topics - unhealthy practise that makes learning incomplete (regardless what topics come out for exam) because those that are not spotted are ignored.

Agreed. Exam is nothing but a benchmark. It doesn't make learning fun in any way. Fun in learning comes from the freedom to apply that knowledge, which is quite absent in our education system.

You get me wrong here. Maybe your idea of spotting is to try to determine what questions and topics will pop up during the exam, but my idea of spotting is to emphasize on those important chapters and facts that isn't bs and might actually appear in exams. You will somehow or rather feel that after doing endless piles of past years' paper. oh...whatever.

But for SPM sejarah, i needed spoting to survive. cos i know i can't simply get all those dates and names in my head when three quarter the book is about Muslims warrior names. argh...

ps/ hey, apa jadi to this thread. pity the guy who ask that question. :D

Just to note. In STPM Physics for my batch, 8 marks in Paper 2 came from a topic not questioned in detail in 25 years (according to my teacher). Those who spotted couldn't even answer a line for that question.

It was something about particle physics.
