With many Recom members are currently scholarship holders to prestigious universities in various countries, Recom could be a very good source of information for those F5-leavers who would like to seek more information on this aspect.
As many of those F5-leavers will start their national service in mid-January, so we should get this FAQ on various scholarship programs out as soon as possible.
To ensure easier reference, I would like to set up some guidelines for those who would share their information on various scholarships.
We will utilize a code system. So, if your information is for:-
GEN - All scholarship granting bodies.
JPA - Public Service Department (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam)
PET - Petronas
MAR - Mara
TEL - Telekom Malaysia
TNB - Tenaga Nasional
BNM - Bank Negara Malaysia
SEC - Security Commissioners.
(If anyone knows of other scholarship bodies for post-SPM students, please post it here)
We would also have code for reference to which countries:-
ALL - All countries
US - For United States
UK - United Kingdom
GER - Germany
FRA - France
JPN - Japan
KOR - Korea
UKR - Ukraine/Russia
AUS - Australia
NZ - New Zealand
CAN - Canada
SG - Singapore
OTH - Other countries
So, you will post based on this format:-
JPA_JPN:
PET_US:
etc.
I would also hope to compile at this area those Recom members under various programs, so that those in need could contact. (Hope those whose name is not here yet, could kindly message me - i will be outstation from 30th to 2nd)

(Really hope those scholars in UK, Aus, NZ, France could share their contact, thanks.)
Really hope to see a lot of responses from Recom members to share such information, from how long is the course, how long is the bond, what course you are taking, how's the chances of application, etc... practically anything that you deem necessary for those who would like to apply for those scholarships.
I would also urge everyone to spread the words around to your friends, esp those in your high schools, to attract more people to Recom
If anyone has any suggestion on how Recom could better serve for this purpose, please kindly suggest it out.
For those F5 students who are looking for information on scholarships, please feel free to post your questions here.

Really hope to see fellow Recom members, especially those scholarship holders would chip in, to support this sharing of information with fellow Malaysians, who are waiting anxiously for their SPM results.
Really hope that all of us could share the information, besides inviting your friends, especially those of your juniors in your high schools to join Recom for those information.
Happy New Year to all.

I wish to introduce the Technical Study to Japan I am taking now. I spent around 10 months in KL and a year in Tokyo to study the Japanese language and some Maths, Physics and Chemistry (but our juniors have to study in KL for 2 years now, Japanese teachers are teaching them in KL). and went to the National technical college in Japan for 3 years. we will get a diploma from the college but we can continue our study in universities in Japan as third year students. and JPA is still sponsoring us.
One may spend altogether 7 years to get a degree after SPM, but for those who dont care about time, this is a good choice, since you can master another language and try different life in Japan (staying in different places for language school, technical college and university). and the study in technical college is not so difficult, so you have time to do sth you are interested, like Robot contest, programming contest, music, sports or Japanese Karate, Judo, tea ceremony and so on. have a colourful and meaningful student life here.
But the most important thing is, make sure that you are interested in engineering and have some confidence in your language. but it is not so difficult.

Yeah,
We will be able to experience the life in Kampung area when we are in college and the city life when we are in University.
To those who has watched the last Samurai and seems to like the living style or the sceneries (well, can?t find it in big cities though) then join us: wink:
There are 2 different courses that JPA offers in Japan.
1. The course that will allow you to enter university directly which will
takes only 6 years to get a degree. This course is open for
Bumiputera only and you will enter the university after 2 years of
language course in UM.
2. The course which will need you to get a diploma. You will need to
study the language for 2 years in UTMKL, and then enter technical college
for 3 years to get a diploma. We may REAPPLY to continue our studies in
university if we manage to enter the university to continue our studies.
However until now, for those who manage to enter the university, all of
Their applications to continue the university are approved.

JPA_UK:
Hi,
this is my first posting and i dont know what i should be informing the juniors abt the JPA scholarships. :) The info that i provide may not be accurate at this point of time coz policies may have changed. It is essential that students get at least A2 for Chemistry and Biology. As far as i know, this is probably the major prerequisite to apply for med. 8)
JPA sponsors students to study medicine in any uni in the UK..no limitation in the choice of uni if u study in a private college for ur pre-u. The Alevel subject that is preferred by most unis would be chem and bio up to A2 level. However, some unis do accept students who take either one up to A2 level...please check uni prospectus for exact details...
The personal statement is the most impt thing to gain entry into a UK uni, at least for medicine. Please put in a lot of effort in the essay, giving proof of ur deep interest in medicine. Seek advice from counsellors from ur colleges...they can provide very good tips to write...
The interview process is also another dreadful time. The only thing that i can say that speak truthfully coz u chose to study medicine due to ur own interest, inspiration and motivation. Show that to the interviewers and i m confident u would be able to get thru that difficult time....
all the best to all aspiring med students... :P

I think it would be so much easier if those who have inquiries post their questions here and we can answer them. If we were to type out all the information that we have, it could be a waste of time because I feel that many students (secondary school leavers) already know them from newspapers and by calling up the respective departments. It is the more insightful questions and doubts that students will want addressed, those with answers that cannot be obtained from newspapers but from those currently under the scholarship. So, I say we let people know about this forum, and hopefully we will get questions here that we could answer.

There are 2 different courses that JPA offers in Japan.
there is another scholarship sponsored by various sponsors such as mara, tnb, telekom which goes under the name of JAD program (Japanese Associate Degree...do i get this right?hmn).mostly for engineering courses.
I dont think that its open for non bumiputra. Not sure.u guys check it out la.Anyway, under JAD the students will do their preparation inmsia(kypm ,kolej yayasan pelajaran mara bangi) and then will enter 2nd year university.so basically its only 3 years in jpn n u'll get a degree .mostly private universities around tokyo n some in osaka .sometimes they'll send students to nagaoka too.

1. Is there a US policy which allows international students to work in US for a year after they graduated?
2. I reckon that the Government would want more Science or Technical (ie. Engineering, Computer Science) students, therefore are there less allocation for Arts (ie. Economics) students? Is there any quota of this sort?
3. Am I guaranteed a US university once I am granted a JPA US scholarship? Will my scholarship be retracted if I do badly in the ADFP? Are we given the liberty to choose the universities that we want? I understand that different universities have different school fees and that our Government have a rather tight budget - so the Gov might prefer us to go to a cheaper university. Naturally, I will want to apply to the Ivy League, but if I fail to get into any one of them, am I still assigned to another university? I notice that many fellow JPA students are in Carnagie Mellon, is there any special correlation within the JPA and CMU? If not, why did they choose to go to CMU?
4. What do most JPA students do from the time they got their SPM results till the start of ADFP (which is in August)? Study A-level? Form 6? Or local colleges?

1. Is there a US policy which allows international students to work in US for a year after they graduated?
Yes, if I am not wrong, it is called Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows you to work for a year in your field of studies .
2. I reckon that the Government would want more Science or Technical (ie. Engineering, Computer Science) students, therefore are there less allocation for Arts (ie. Economics) students? Is there any quota of this sort?
Basically there is no quota, but government tends to have more scholarships in engineering, computer science, biotech, medicine, pharmacy.
You are not guaranteed a US university. For JPA Scholarship, you will be most likely placed at Intec, UiTM. Your scholarship is only guaranteed if you got a place in the university allowed by JPA for your major. Typically JPA have a list of universities, which is top 10 for each particular major. Doing badly in ADFP is not too big a deal, but that would affect your university application, especially if it is the first semester and if you fail to get a uni within the JPA list, you could be in deep water. But don't worry too much, you will be fine.
You have the liberty to choose the university, but it must be within the list of JPA. The universities in the list change slightly every year. For instance, Electrical Engineering for my batch, the universites approved are MIT, Stanford, Cornell, Princeton, Columbia, CMU, Illinois, Michigan, USC and Purdue. So, if you get one of these unis, you are fine.
There is NO such case that government would prefer you go to cheaper university. It is always government's aspiration and hope that you try your best to enter the best possible universities, based on your capabilities.
You are not assigned a university. Typically JPA will pay for your application fee for 3-4 universities, depending on your performance at ADFP program. Some students choose to apply for more universities on their own. There are placement coordinator at UiTM who would advise you to apply which universities that you should apply, but final decision lies on you. If you have performed well, they would advise you to apply for better universities. So, you have to be realistic when you apply. Typically you will apply universities, based on 3 categories: aspirations(which is the universities that you really hope to achieve, and you have a realistic, but small chances of getting in), good chances(these universities are those that you have pretty high chance of getting in, say 60-80% chances), safety nets(for these unis, you have almost 90-99% chances of getting in).
So, depending on your capabilites, your list will be different from other students. If you want to try and apply for more universities, feel free to do so, but JPA will only pay for those 3-4 unis that you have selected together with your placement coordinator in UiTM.
JPA students doing ADFP have gained admission/enrolled in almost, if not all, top universities in the world, may be the only one not yet achieved is Caltech.
I think the number of JPA scholars at CMU is not large compared to many other universities in US, like Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, USC, Purdue, RPI etc. On why those students choose to go to CMU? I would let those who are studying in CMU, or have studied there to let you know, but CMU's computer science and computer engineering is among the top 3 in the world, if not top 2. Jiin Joo, Hui Lin, Sue Yi etc will be able to tell you more.
4. What do most JPA students do from the time they got their SPM results till the start of ADFP (which is in August)? Study A-level? Form 6? Or local colleges?
The start of ADFP is typically in May/June, unless you are like me, getting in as 3rd intake in August. On what they do after they get their SPM results, it depends. Some may be studying in local colleges, some in UTM (it used to accept SPM leavers), private universities, ASEAN Scholarships in Singapore, Form 6 etc. It is up to you. It won't make much difference. To choose where to study, just imagine that if you do not get JPA scholarship, where you hope to study, then go there and study.
Feel free to bombard us with more questions.

you could be in deep water
could you clarify on this? What happens to a student who fails to gain admission?
silverblue
04-01-2004, 01:18 AM
It is very rare that a student will fail to gain admission in all the 3 or 4 University applications, because like what Chen Chow said, all of us are required to apply to at least ONE 'safety net', which means a University that will almost definitely accept you (meaning you've met their minimum requirements). However, for the very few who are unlucky and fail to gain admittance in even their safety net unis, not to worry, cos JPA will still help you out. JPA has very good relations/affiliations with some of the US universities and sometimes, they can talk to the admittance officers and persuade them to accept you (this usually applies to safety net unis only). But anyway, my advise is don't think so much about failing but concentrate more on getting good results and writing a good application to the Unis. I am sure you can do it if you really want to! :)

GEN_UKR:
Generally it's easy to pursue medical degree in Ukraine. The only catch is that you need to use your own money for the first year, and the next year you need to apply for GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP be it mara or jpa. These boars tend to sponsor because the cost of study here is cheap, for the whole six years it's only 120 thou, including food and hostel, provided you don't splurge much on luxurius items. Fees is about 3000USD per year.
Another catch is that you have to go through agents, and these agents CHEAT. They will charge you extravagantly to pursue medical degree in Ukraine.
If anyone is interested do contact me at amirulnazri@<hidden> for more information. I can recommend good agent which take minimal fees.

Thanks a lot nad067 on the information in Ukraine.
I would like to add on that by saying that JPA does have scholarship directly from SPM to Ukraine as well.
I think among the JPA program to various countries, the information on the JPA scholarship to Australia, New Zealand, France, Korea has not been touched much on, so may be we could have someone who is under those program, or those who are familiar to share.
Among the things you could mention briefly include, how long is the program, what preparation program you did, which uni/college are you expected to be sent to etc.

Anyone admited 2 UC Berkeley b4 from ATU?
chenchow
04-01-2004, 10:16 PM
If I am not wrong, there were 2 JPA scholars who awee under ATU program in Sunway College got into Berkeley, but their program includes A Level. They were SPM 1998 batch. Yeah, I think I should include UC Berkeley and UCLA in that list of exclusion. The main reason being those UC colleges require A Level.

as far as i know, studying in germany is very good if you are planning to do engineering. JPA does offer scholarships for studying engineering in germany, in the university of applied science. (Fachhochschule)
anyway, what i can say is german language is VERY important if u plan to study there. germans do not or rarely speaks english. :?
anyway, check out this site.it's available in english too.

To those who are interested in studying in Japan, i think the link below will answer most of the questions that you have. There are also details on scholarship offered by the education minitry of Japan and students exchange programmes.
http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj_stope.html
To those who want to know more about Japan education system, all the information can be found there too.
There are a few (financial) options for an American education:
1. Scholarship from Malaysian government
2. Scholarship from local private corporations
3. Scholarship from foreign corporations (usually Singapore)
4. Education loans
5. Financial aid package/grant from university
6. Individual sponsors (I'm sure you've read these stories in local papers.)
7. Last but not least, FAMA $_$
Generally, one apply for scholarship after gaining admission to (i.e. securing a place in) a university.
JPA is actually consistent with this practice. JPA sponsored students, in fact, sign two different contracts:
a. ADFP -> post-SPM
b. US -> post-admission-to-American-University
Note: ADFP = American Degree Foundation Program, which is a different program from ADP (American Degree Program). ADP is the most common program (2+1, 3+0) offered by local private colleges (e.g. INTI). ADFP, on the other hand, is a PRE-university (side note: university is better known as "college" in America) program. While ADP implies affiliation with a particular American University, ADFP may or may not have such an affiliation.
The easiest way to describe the difference is that students in ADFP will have to apply for and enroll in an American college while ADP students are basically enrolled students of the particular affiliated American college. (With the multitude of programs out there, it's almost impossible for me to cover every single case, so I apologize for the really generalized summary.) What this means is that students in ADP are more often than not, inclined to pick their university from a pool which, unfortunately, is rather limited in terms of Top Tier universities.
US News www.usnews.com annually ranks American universities (e.g. Top 10, Top 50 lists). I would encourage prospective students to survey the list and have a general sense of where the universities stand. However, it would be counter-productive if one is to decide which college to attend to solely based on rankings.
Back to financial matters. Securing a financial aid package from a US college as an international student is not an easy task (you not only have to compete for limited resources with Americans, but also with other international applicants). Some college even explicitly state that "your chances of admission are reduced if you apply for financial aid." Nonetheless, there are also colleges which offer "need-blind admissions," meaning that your financial capacity (will you be able to pay for your education?) does not affect admissions chances (do/will you "fit" in the college?).

I am helping a friend (lilet) to post this.
Is there anyone out there who knows about the JPA Biotech program? Which country has current JPA scholars doing Biotech. I know US for sure, but is there such biotech students sent by JPA in countries like Aus, NZ?
Thank you.
To SPM leavers, please feel free to ask any question on scholarships here.

NZ and Australia--yes, popular for biotech.
but US is not bad too...although to be honest, there are not too many top u's offering biotech...most universities offer biotech as masters degree/above..
a few schools ATU 9 people have attended/applied for biotech program include UC San Diego, Penn State, SUNY Buffalo.....dont think there are many more...
hope these help!

Thanks Shian Ling for the information.
Since most SPM leavers will be looking for scholarships, and JPA scholarships deadline is due in a few days, I hope that those who have any advice on which course, which country to choose could shed some lights here. May be you guys could share with those who would be applying on roughly how many people JPA selected for each course and each country that you know...
To fellow ReCom members, hope that you can spread the news to those F5 leavers about their prospect of asking questions to fellow ReCom members.
To those SPM leavers, please feel free to post your questions here.
Questions are for any scholarship/loan information, so it is not only restricted to JPA.

MOE(Ministry of Education), UK,NZ,AUS:
Hey ppl.
I'm currently under this twinning prog, sponsored by the MOE (is that a GEN, chenchow?) :?
It's a TESL (Teaching English as a 2nd Language) prog, and for those interested in becoming english majors or future English Language educators, this is the one prog for you. I don't know about the situation now, but when i was applying for Univs, i found it was kinda difficult to get a scholar for TESL. this one pun, thanks to my mum,i found out bout it.
Ok. The prog is kinda like this:
It's split into 2, local n overseas prog.
You hv to go thru a test, Ujian Sahsiah Keguruan (to see whether you're a suitable candidate. Then, hv to go thru an interview. you'll be channeled accordingly, (depends on your SPM, the Ujian Sahsiah ... interview results) to either prog (local/overseas).
Then, 1 and a 1/2 years in the foundation prog, in a teacher training college (TTC) . One major exam at the end of the foundation prog, then you're off to the first year.
At the start of Year 1, you'll be placed in either one of the 5 univs:
St. Mark n St John College (UK), Victoria University of Wellington (NZ, Univ of Auckland(NZ), Queensland University of Technology (AUS) and Macquarie University(AUS).
One more year in Msia, then you're off to the overseas Univ for 2 years - your 2nd n 3rd year. Then, final year come back to Msia for the practicum etc.
You'll grad here but the degree'll be given/endorsed by the foreign Univ which you go to for your 2nd n 3rd year (like, me..i'm going to Queensland. So my degree'll be given by QUT..those going to UK will get a degree from the Univ in UK).
So..that's it.
perks?
You'll get monthly allowance, accomodation etc tak pyh risau..coz college policy - students must live in the college hostels. Plus, this place's real near UM, good transportation (buses, PUTRA etc) very easy.
Jaa...Oh ya...almost forgot...Upon graduating, hv to work with MOE for 3-4 years...but after that, if you wanna cabut, work somewhere else, it's up to you.
Anyway, if you're interested in TESl, then this is the one for you. I didn't wanna take up this course at first, but thanks to my mum, found it to be quite an eye-opener. Since this teahcer training college's an international one ([i]e.g we hv foreigners coming in n out, loads courses are held here, we had this MASSIVE international conference last year), it's quite a good experience. Plus, you get to learn French/Japanese language coz it's the college policy - the students hv to take up at least one foreign language. :D
Gimme a holler if you guys wanna know anything. Hope i've been of help.

While I'm not an expert in biotech, I am pretty certain that a good grounding in molecular biology is required in any biotech area.
And universities like Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Berkeley have Nobel-prize winning (or equivalently brilliant) professors in these areas.

Although I'm a chemical engineer, most of my research and participation are concentrated in the biomolecular@<hidden> and biomedical applications. As for what I know, I think US has the greatest capital thats being put down for biotech advances and research.
Take for example the Lincoln Institute in MIT, their research in biosensors and nanobiotechnology itself is like 20 years ahead of the current time. Well, you may ask if its 20 years ahead why are we not seeing ayn of this gadgetry in the market. The think about the US is most of their high tech research are done under the supervisory of the intelligence service thats CIA. And most of thier achievements are published in scientific papers but not implemented comercially. So thats why we dont see any of these advancements...if you're lucky you might come across reading about it.
I personally think that the best place to do any kind of studies in Biotech would the US. Not to say their the best, but the just have a lot fund to seized oppertunity. That's why a lot of foreign researcher comes to the US whether they conduct thier research wiithout worrying about the funds. And there's like super abundance of Uni's offering biotech right now...i8ts simply the next big thing after the so called glorious information age.

Hi Mish, Welcome to ReCom family~!
JPA Scholarship has been on meritocracy policy for some time and there is no quota system. As long as you perform well, you should be able to get the scholarships. There are many ReCom members are the holders of such scholarships.
On interviews, JPA interviews have been on group interviews for the past 2 years due to too many students, but I think the main thing is to highlight yourself well. On what should and shouldn't do, there isn't any clear cut answer since it is very subjective. But a compilation of suggestions given by many scholarship holders are available in an article I wrote at ReMag, ReCom Magazine http://remag.recom.org . Read it. There are a lot of good advices for you.
On what language is the interview. Get ready for both BM and English. If you are asked in English, answer in English and if you are asked in BM, answer in BM. As a deserving Malaysian scholarship holder, you should be able to show good commands of both the national and international language.
Welcome to ReCom~! Please go to Introduce ourselves thread to introduce yourself~! Feel free to spread the news around about ReCom~!

I can't tell u for sure about the quota or the interview since I took the interview ages ago.
My interview was in Malay though and they ask stuff like what your dad does for a living and what german factories/companies are there in Malaysia. ( since i chose Germany as my first choice)
What i know is they change their policies every now and then, so what is true today might be gone tomorrow.
and i just got to know that I have to pay back RM 160,000 (amended recently) instead of RM 100,000 if I break the contract.
See, they never tell you when they will change their policies and they are not obliged to do so cause it's in the contract clause.

i was wondering if we may divide the scholarship links in the web links to those for SPM adn STPM as i think it will be easier for the use of others.
we may add for master course too if there is any.

we could definitely do so, but I think as of currently we have too few scholarship links yet, and also almost all of the scholarships are for SPM level. Once more members submit more links up, we can definitely do that...
On the price for breaking contract, I think we should never even bother to think of it. I, for one, would definitely vote for increasing it to RM1 million or something like that. I think that way we would be able to select those people who genuinely need the scholarships and as well provide loyalty to our country. If every scholar who has a mind of not wanting to serve the nation, then I think you don't deserve to be a national scholar.
Thailand has a bond of 20 years and if broken, they have to pay triple the price the government pays for it and I know that they stay loyal, so why Malaysians can't do that?

Bad news or good news, i dun know, but JPA has just changed the policy recently!!!
If you break the bond, you are not paying 160K only, that was the "good" or "bad" old day(depending on what you think!!)
The new policy is:

As far as I know, i don't think JPA has any scholarship on Psychology. Most of the scholarships are in engineering, medicine, pharmacy, bio tech, com sci, economics, international relations, accounting, architecture, law etc...
Mish, which courses and which country under JPA that you applied to?
You can also go to remag.recom.org , where we have an article on Pointers to Scholarship Interview. you can learn some tricks from there. It is an article that compiles advice from many ReCom members who are scholarship holders of various prestigious scholarships and are studying in many established universities.
As I pointed out in the Introduce yourself thread, ReCom is a good learning opportunities for all of us~! You read and write a lot and practice makes perfect and we learn together~!
Have you applied to any university or junior colleges in Singapore?
Feel free to bombard any question to ReCom~! Welcome to join ReCom family~!

So far, I still can't find any scholarship which I can apply to study at Sg. As I know, I must at least STPM, A level or quivalent holder to go in d uni at sg. I can't as a spm leaver.

i'm one of spm leavers for the year 2003.. i had apply for jpa scholarship to study actuarial science in u.s.. because u.s is the only country that offer this course in the jpa's application form.. actually, in secondary school, i was a technical student... in the jpa advertisement, it said that students who apply for this course need to score at least b3 in english, add maths, physics, biology & chemistry... and the problem is i don't take biology during spm... but i think that actuarial science has nothing to do with biology cause there are not so much related, right? but, now i'm afraid that my application will be rejected.. i hope anyone out there can tell me more about this course (i only knew a lil' bit about this course & i'm interested with it).. & can anyone tell me the frequently asked questions during the jpa's interview..

Hi~! Welcome hamiza and Sylvia to ReCom family~!
Hope that you guys can go to Introduce Yourself thread to introduce yourself~!
Hamiza, on actuarial science, I will leave it to other fellow ReComers. You can check this thread or the introduce yourself thread and you will find a number of ReCom members are current JPA scholars who are doing actuarial science. they will be able to give you more details about it.
I would also like to ask those who had recently had JPA interview (SPM 01,02), which has group interview to share your experience here, as I believe that would be more relevant.
hamiza, I would think that you get ready with an alternative course that you would want when you go for interview. Ask the interviewer about the fact that you didn't take biology and seek their opinions politely. If you need to make a change of course, please mention it at the interview.
Sylvia, on when and where is your JPA interview, you would know when JPA sends you a letter. But be forewarn that the time frame will be very tight. The letter would typically reach you about 3 days before the interview. On where is the interview, it is usually at the center that you choose. JPA will let you know via email.
On the sample questions, as I mention above, will let those who just had the interview in groups to share...
yekban81, thanks for sharing~!
main scholarship to study in Singapore would be ASEAN Scholarship. There are ASEAN scholarships for SPM leavers, but guess the deadlines are well over. So, perhaps, the best way would be for you to go through STPM or A Level before applying to Singapore.
Good Luck to everyone who is applying for scholarship~!

I am helping a friend (lilet) to post this.
Is there anyone out there who knows about the JPA Biotech program? Which country has current JPA scholars doing Biotech. I know US for sure, but is there such biotech students sent by JPA in countries like Aus, NZ?
Thank you.
To SPM leavers, please feel free to ask any question on scholarships here.
well... as the infomation i get from my juniors that came to korea last year, which were 2002 SPM leavers, they get to choose Biotech as thier major after they finish thier korean language course at february next year... they will enter selected university that has been selected by JPA, but i am not sure which university it is.
Those choose Biotech is different with those that taking other course. JPA_KOR is just alike JPA_Japan, we have to learn korean language for around one and half years in the Seoul National University. After finish the language course, u will be placed into a technical college which called DongYang Technical College. It depends on the course u choose, some of the courses need 3 years to complete the diploma course. but most of the course only need 2 years. Besides to be placed to study in the college, we can try to apply for other universities that recorgnised by JPA. But we are encouraged to study in the college first because it is not easy to study in a university by using korean language just after finishing the language course.
After we get the diploma, we can apply for university to complete our study to get degree. so far the universities that most of the malaysian students apply are Korea University and Hanyang University. Korea University is one of the TOP 5 university in Korea and HanYang University is the TOP university for the School of Engineering.
That's some general infomation that related about JPA_KOR. if got anyone that interested about JPA_KOR, just try to message me. I will try to help if i able to. thanks.

naturesimple: i am 1 of the graduates of spm 2003. now wandering about and doing nothing and jobless. regarding about the jpa scolarship i myself have already sent in my application form and i have choosen engineering in australia. is that weird to choose the course in australia cause many replies stated that us and uk are the best place to go for especially in engineering??? n ........any tips about the interview later on??? i know many have asked this question before ... but i just hope to get a proper answer even tough the truth is that i'm lazy to search for it.
>> Hope that those SPM 01 and SPM 02 people can come in and help answer those questions about the group interview process ok? Thank you~! I think it depends on preference and how you look at it~! I don't think many here are doing engineering in UK.

There have been many questions about the JPA interview. So here it is:
1. You will receive a letter from JPA if you are shortlisted for interviews around the end of March/the beginning of April.
2. Remember to bring documents needed.
3. On your interview day, students will be separated into few groups, with around 20 students in a group.
4. Each group will have the interview together.
5. It is more like a presentation rather than an interview actually. Each group will have to respond to a same topic. You have to voice your opinion regarding to the topic given. The topic might be any social issue. For example:
a. Tell us your opinion the development of music industry in Malaysia.
b. How to imporve the inter-race harmony in Malaysia?
c.....
You will be given som time to think about the topic. Anyone who is ready can volunteer to present.
6. Language
The languages policy might be different, depending on which location you have your interviews. Some allow you to use either Malay/English for the entire presentation. Some reuqire you to use both languages (means you have to use Malay/English first, and switch to another language at the middle of your presentation.
7. Time
Everyone is limited to a certain amount of time, 10 minutes, in general.
8. Before the interview begins, the interviewers will go through your certificates, result slips, identity certificates of yours and your parents. They will also reconfirm your courses and countries. If you would like to change your mind in the courses and countries, you MUST let them know on the spot. That is your last chance. Although you can always appeal after you get the scholarship, the process will be very complicated and hard.
If you need any further information, please let me know. I will try my very best to remember what happened 2 years ago.

Thanks Chenghau for the information provided.I am sure they will come in handy. You said that it is more like a presentation rather than an interview ,so do we have to interact with the other members in the group or we just stand up and present our opinion one by one?If with do have do interact, how should we do it ?Can we do it like a group dicussion? But tere are 20 people in a group and that's a large group ,won't that be hard to dicuss?

Very rarely that there will be interactions between group members. What most likely to happen is:
"I agree with MR X that....."
"As Mr X pointed just now, we...."
In short, it is more like voicing your personal thoughts rather than discussion. Anyway, it really depends on the interviewers.
Things might change. Like my year (2002) was the first year they change the interview format and many did not expect such format. No one can tell whether they might do it in discussion this year.

general piece of advice:
avoid personal attacks. make positive/constructive remarks about other people and keep the conversation alive.

I also think it's about your listening skills and how open you are to suggestions and maybe not only criticise other people's opinions but to build on them

Well.. after all of us met each other in INTEC, we talked about our interviews .. and we found out that different places have different styles of interveiws... so i guess it depends on the interviewers u get!
However, no matter what, u MUST TALK during the interview session. Try to grab any ooportunity u have to talk.. Hmm.. u really have to "fight" against the others to talk... try to "crap" anything related to the topic u get... as long as u talk then i guess its ok !
Another advice is that make sure u have some knowledge of the field u r applying... if not.. it shows that u r not interested enough.. For example, there was one gal in my group who applied for Medic... she din even know what is the difference between high colestrol and low colestrol food!after a long pause, the interveiwer just said" Ok.. thank you.."...
Nonetheless, there are many people who said that interview is not important.. Well.. for my case.. i guess it is true.. the interviewers just looked at our certificates and documents while we were talking.. he din even know who was talking... sigh~
BUT do take the interview seriously.. u never know what will happen ~ Try to make urself the most outstanding one in ur group~ Good luck u guys! :D

I would like to say that listening is very essential in this kind of interview setting. As had been said, build on others opinion and have constructive opinions. Make sure you listen and not just making up your thoughts. It would be a humiliation if you just merely repeat a point that had been mentioned by others.
It would be great if you could relate personal experience to those topics mentioned. Say, How to imporve the inter-race harmony in Malaysia?
Give an example of an effort that you had worked on and showed it to them~! And frankly who knows something that you had done in ReCom, connecting with Malaysians all over the world and discussing stuff, could potentially be something that you can talk about during the interview~!
Another thing, read widely and make sure be polite during interview. While it is important to speak, never speak too fast. Speak clearly. It is the quality that matters. Hopefully your points would resonate with the interviewers. Be confident when speak and look at the interviewers. Hopefully get some head nods from them.
May be those who had gone through the interview could share some more topics/questions related, so that those who are preparing could get a good preparation on that!
One month to go to the interview day, so sufficient time to prepare~!

to mish n every1 who interested:
actually petronas interview is similar to jpa scolarship as what chenghau has stated.but there is also some different between them. first all students who have been shortlisted will be divided into groups n each group comprises only 20 students. the different is that this number of students then again be divided into 4 each in smaller group. then only these smaller groups will be given situation n about 10 minit to get ready. u will be called up to be interviewed accordingly n INDIVIDUALLY! only after all the 4 members in smaller group finish individual interview then again they will called ur smaller group to do a negotiation in front of them.
okie about it :?:

I understand that now is a very frustarting time, as you have no idea how the interview is going to be. Nobody would know what the interview topic is going to be. But people did post some "past year topics." Check it out.
You have to wait for 1 hour - few hours before you are "interviewed" for 10 minutes. Kinda sad, isn't it?

Why don't those who have gone through interview, post your interview topic here, and those who are preparing can discuss here on those topics.

I couldn't help wondering whether there is anyone out there who doesn't feel frustrated when it comes to facing interviews. Can someone actually go straight for interview without doing any substantial research first and then come out successful? I bet the answer is no. I'm also facing this dilemma now.. fresh out of SPM too. Guess there's just no short cut around this, is there? :D

I believe the interview should be around mid April.

of course u have to put in ur best effort and hope for the best...
prepare? if u read the newspaper every now and then, u should be fine without much preparation...
if u never flip the paper and never crack a book, i can tell u that u must really cross ur fingers and try to read about some important current issues...
fresh out from SPM? dilemma? make up your mind by meeting ur school counselor... try to ask urself what u wanna be in the future..
what's ur interest??
in order to be productive, u have to make up ur mind ASAP..

Yeah, really a very frustarting time!! I even feel that the pressure is more than the one when I was facing the spm! Wait for 1 hour to hours for the interview? I don't really mind that since that maybe they are busy for other groups of interviewees but.... I will probably get nervous n more nervous when I have more time to think of it.... every jpa scholars faced the same situation of waiting 1 hour to hours?
I was actually asking about the topic for the petronas scholarship interview which naturesimple has just gone through. I'm sorry for not mention it. :)
And of course, I will be very appreciate if you can share the topics of the interviews u have gone through!
Thanks a lot!

pressure?? dillema?? frustrated??.......kinda serious already i think
i admit that interview is some formal thing but felling of pressure n frustrated only stuck u during interview. i have heard once that interview is just like a dating where u go with desire n happiness! then u would have the passion to keep the conversation going on n on. also of course u would talk normally with ur loved 1 right? so y wanna change it now  ??? however u must equip urself with ideas n things like current issues n .........................knowledge(too formal already u may say).in other word i agree wat decentmerson have said actually.

Haha.. have to admit that I don't really read much newspaper until lately when I no choice as I have to go through General Paper. lilet, I think the main thing will be to read Malaysia-based newspaper and I would say that it is different than those biased view point of Malaysia in ST. To prepare for this JPA Interview, I think Berita Harian, Utusan, NST and perhaps The Star would be useful. Do read those. Those links are available from ReCom Weblinks.
Yeah, you should view interview positively. I would say that you need to make your presence felt once you reach there. Everyone you interacted with, be it the interviewers, the clerks, other parents or other students, treat them nicely, talk to them nicely and who knows that may turn out to be positive outcomes to you.
And you should sell yourself, especially in those questions related to stuff that you had done. Say your question is on How to Improve Racial Integration in Malaysia. Talk from your own experience with real-world example that you have done will be much better than merely stating the fact.
I would say that participation of you guys in ReCom, could perhaps be brought up during interview~! That will shine very positively on you guys~!

the style for JPA interview is very much like the MUET discussion....
normally, a group of 5 - 6 will be given a topic to discuss about 15 minutes.... it is wise to give others a fair chance to speak... dominating the whole session doesn't prove u to be superior over others.... some session will have some warming up question... but others go directly to the discussion...
just organize ur point well, try to make urself heard, listen to others, refute if u dun agree, give ur support....
dun try to add ur own flavour of artificial accent....it's grotesque and GROSS
before the interview, u'll called to confirm ur courses and countries... if u have any queries, ASK IT.... I;m really remorse that I kept my question , and i got something wrong...I applied for another course becoz the form for 2002 has no column for Actuarial Science... Fortunately, I am not accepted in the first intake, and fortunately enough, I got the appeal one and I changed my course thru the appeal letter.... LUCKILY, i got the appeal.....
THANK GOD I FOUND YOU....hahaahah :P
the BNM interview has several stages. i hear from my fren that there's 3 interviews... not sure as i wasn't contacted after i submitted the form online....
can't help much about the BNM

i haf been to a few interviews..juz tot of sharing a little...
the first interview in my life is of coz the JPA scholarship...
i did not prepare beforehand or anything...serious..i was in spore n it was the SARS period...i was more concern n worried abt how to go back to kuching without approval( i need MOE, my principal n my hostel director's permission--none knew i left the island in the end)
in kuching, the interview was conducted in 6s...we all went in 6 by 6..most of us had the debate style interview...which was fine with me coz i had experience debating...but it was not exactly a debate. 6 of us were divided into the pro side n the con side. then given the topic, we were given the chance one by one to talk. my topic was patriotisme in malaysia, i think. only a few minutes given, i said my stuff n tad was it.
then i had a selection interview in my college in spore for a research attachment....tad was basically quite basic....some interviews' aim is juz to find out certain things...like why are u interested...why do u thnk u r suitable...why u think u can cope...etc...i also had selection interview for leadership positions in interact club, student council etc....
the last interview i had was the yale university interview...
the interviewer juz ask abt my major...why i pick the major...
it was a seriously normal conversation....he asked abt my short stint in spore...ask me to compare there n here...etc...
my advice?
yes, u haf to be well read n well verse most of the time....
but most importantly..

Huh? I know that returning back for JPA interview is kind of allowed if we are under ASEAN, but we still have to inform at least the school and the hostel first if we are leaving, don't we? What about other scholarships? Is there any ex-ASEAN scholars out there who came back to Malaysia more than once for scholarship interviews? If yes, can you please tell me how you did that without getting into trouble with the MOE Singapore? Reason is because I will have to do so too myself...

dear chenchow,
thanx for the reply. glad i've stumbled upon an actuarial student. just wanna ask whether it's tough to compete for that particular JPA scholarship? is it as tough as for medic?
and another thing, my sis got 8a1 and 1a2. what do u think of her chances of getting shortlisted?
she's supposed to be the one doing all these researching thingie. damn frustrated that she's in an army camp (National service). best part is they have no access to tv and newspaper!! urrgghh..just hope that she can talk when the time comes. if there's anyway i can transfer my brain info to her i would...

It will be hard to get JPA without straight A1s this year but for BN scholarship, it is the extra-curricular activites that count.
Well, I went for the BN interview last year. There are two interviews altogether. During the first interview, they asked us to write an English and a bahasa essay. After that, each of us was asked to do an individual presentation. The topic was: Given RM500,000 and a 10 acres land(I don't quite remember the size), write a proposal plan on what how you are going to develop it.
After the individual presentation, we were grouped together and were given the same topic again, but this time we had to present the proposal as a team.
If you make it through, they will call you up for the second interview. At my time, I was interviewed by three people(not very sure which department they came from). They first asked about the role of actuarist in Bank Negara. Then they touched on the achievement.

haha... if u really need to come back for interview, just tell them straight into their face for the first time.... but for the 2nd time, u have to convince them with other lame reason...
just make up a story and come back.... missing a few days of school is still ok...
the most important thing is to get ur parents' letter... and u can go anywhere u like...
the SIngapore system is not to deter u from coming back to Malaysia, but they just want to know where u are.... and they dun have to b responsible if anything happened to you....
i was luckier last year... with the SARS around, i can make up any story and extend a few days of holiday back in Malaysia...

Hahaha... May I know if there is anyone out there who has any creative ideas? Cause I certainly can't think of one really convincing one right now... The teachers told us before that they have heard lots and lots of *cute* excuses from the ASEAN scholars, Malaysians specifically, therefore, they are very prepared. What a good warning! So, I'm wondering whether are there any ways to make it seem more inconspicuous?
Haha... cute excuses? I dunno .... Last time my interview was conducted during the SARS outbreak, so not a prob for me. But then, if you are really desperate, just say that you lost your IC and need to get back to the Malaysia to do it, blah blah blah... they need your parents signature as well as yours, blah blah blah ....
THey'll allow it. By the way, which JC you're from? Do they keep your passport? Do not submit to them your passport to the hostel unless they keep requesting it for it from you personally. If general request is being made, juz ignore it. Otherwise, it's very cumbersome to get it back. Trust me!

err.... a school Hari Kecemerlangan is quite a good reason...
or U can say is 'Ching Ming' if u are a chinese....
if u want to say something about a wedding dinner, u need to prepare a copy of invitation card...
or if u are desperate, u can just say something very emergency...
i remember one of the rul says that if u need to come back to Malaysia on emergency, u just have to tell ur housemaster.... so get to know a housemaster well and play with ur charm.... then u will be fine....
one of my fren came back for 4 times.... 1 for petronas, 1 for posting the JPA application, and the other one is JPA interview...
the 4th time, cancel ASEAN with JPA in hand....

my sis got 8a1 and 1a2. what do u think of her chances of getting shortlisted?
From my experience .... ermmm... kind of tough to get into the 1st intake, unless she has her lucky stars. Sorry for this demoralizing statement, but my batch (2nd intakes) are the ones who has an A2 and other A1s in our SPM, and that is, most of us have more than 9 A1s. I've a friend from St. Xaviers in Penang who got the same result as your sis, but he did not make it... What's more, this year's performance is much higher than my year's. So can you imagine the competition there? Unless your sis has other outstanding performances in co-curricular activities, or other prowess which distinguish her from the rest, or she has been very fortunate all the while... then you'd better pray for a miracle. However, what I would advice is to still go for it. I can't be too sure what JPA has in mind...

one more question for deedee.... where did ur sis wish/choose to go...
if UK, then i can tell u frankly that it is nearly impossible...
if US, then she has to be really good in her interview, she must also has good CCA...it is not impossible because the JPA is kinda weird in their recruitments becoz.... they are a few of them who got a B and get into the first intake...
for 2nd intake, last year, only those who have 10A1 and above have confirmed offer....
one more question, are ur parents/parent government servant?? if yes, then, u stand a much higher chance....

I'm from Anderson JC, the JC with the most fantastic PE lessons in town. On passport, it is not compulsary to surrender ours to the hostel but most of us do so. Caused me to forgot about my passport the previous time I came back to Malaysia. Okay, I admit that I am forgetful too! Missed the bus.. ~sigh~

Hahah.. my excuse back then was: "I'm having lunch with the PM :)"
which of course was true but i stayed an extra few days for JPA interview at home.
I think there's no harm in telling them directly that you're going home for a scholarship interview. In fact, I don't see why anyone should hesitate leaving JC for legitimate reasons... unless you really do intend to stay in JC for 2 yrs... have other academic commitments or you're representing the school for tournaments...
I agree that it's a matter of liability. As long as you release the JC/MOE from any liabilities during your absense, should be okay.

Ermmm... Are you good in TSD (Theatre, Sketch and Drama)? I picked up a few skills from my friend who's into that, and well, it's very useful. Always keep a straight face, try to look desperate, and get ready to cry if the housemaster says no (of course i dun cry, just look panic). And i dun think Victoria Hall needs to print our wedding card. Just say you are supposed to be your cousin's bride's maid... Or your long long distance uncle coming to visit you. ANd it would be another long long time before u can meet him again... whatever you do, be serious and try to come up with reasonable answers to what they ask u (they like to ask questions, i guess). As long u can convince them verbally, then you're through. No black and white needed (except parents letters).

thanks for all ur replies. btw i'm a GIRL..not a brother! LOL...only a sister can care so much for their sibblings..no offense to the guys out there.
quite demoralizing comemnts. but i have another question, all those ppl applying and getting straignt A1s, does it apply just for medicine course? what of other courses like engineering, business, etc...surely the academic requirements are much less?? well i pray that's the case..it's a difference between A1 and damn A2...
she applied for actuarial science in US (which i think requirements are quite high for this course..not an easy one to take). my dad works for sarawak electricity cooperation...which is half gov and half private. so i don't really know how to answer whether he's a gov officer or not????? does that count?
btw is there a way to check whether one's been shortlisted or not? or it's just a waiting game now?? i hate waiting...
thanks to chuilin for sharing BN interview...hope there's some chance!!! pretty tough questions there..do they btw repeat the same questions every yr?

For your info, i'm also concern about my sis's academic progress... Haha.
Like what i've told u earlier, i dunno what JPA has in mind. For those who are applying to UK medicine, some may end up in Russia or Indo. Others, might actually end up doing bios in aus. Result is one thing. Competition is another thing. You must be certain with what choice you want. Actuarial Science has only 1 choice, which is US. And i think US is really good for actuarial as well. But ATU 10 has lots of actuarials liao. Dunno why ler ...
Anyway, i think the interview doesn't really help much, not in my case, at least. When i went for the interview, the only thing that they are concern of is my A2. Haha, do you get what i imply? Most peeps say it's just for the sake of formality. But i reckon there are some cases too which the interviews help... BUt i think what matters most is what other quality your sis has.

hi, just another newbie here....
i wan to tell u about my dumb experience. i enrolled for a-levels program in one of the private colleges, and when i got my spm 2002 results, i was so happy (you know la, those private colleges offer merit scholarships for their students, and i was eligible for the full scholarship). And bcos of that, i didnt bother looking at other scholarships, and i didnt know about jpa at all, sad case. and my friends applied without letting me know, i was so disappointed of them. now, i am goin to complete my a levels soon, this june, is there any jpa scholarship for a levels student?
i'm actually loooking forward to study biotech, and i am currently holding conditional offers from uni of bristol and uni of newcastle from uk, and unconditional offer from uni of queensland, australia. how should i look for scholarship? i am tired of searching from the net, cant seemed to find what i want... so need plenty of help here... :(
i had also applied for scholarship by japanese goverment, to study in japan. it is called....monbusho or something like that, i cant remember. anyone here applied to that scholarship before? if accepted, i have to undergo 1 year intensive japanese language course. i wonder how am i able to study japanese for all my subjects in just 1 year? that will be very tough, rite? even in english, which is my language since young, science subjects are already tough, cant imagine wat will happen if suddenly i have to change to japanese.... hope seniors studying in japan can help with this :)
thanks a lot everyone. how i wish i came across this website last year. i missed the jpa scholarship chance. sigh...take care.

i am goin to complete my a levels soon, this june, is there any jpa scholarship for a levels student?
sorry to hear that... but just wanna tell u that there is no scholarship from jpa for A-levels student...
u can try to search for Singapore based scholarships... i remember reading about a Singapore Government Scholarship(no bond), it is an agreement btwn government....
or u can try to use ur A-level results to get a company to co-sponsor u.... try some big company...
conditional offers from uni of bristol and uni of newcastle from uk, and unconditional offer from uni of queensland, australia
when u say offers, u just mean offer for a place to study rite.?? then, try to get some aid or scholarship... but i dun think there are many out there for UK and Aus... try to hunt around during the education fair....or ask the counselor at ur college....
well, when there's a will, there's a way....learning a 2nd language is no doubt difficult, but it is possible... I have a Malay friend who know how to speak and write in Japanese and Mandarin... she really put a lot of my Chinese friends to shame...
try to check that the 1 year of intensive course, it is more a language course than science course... and if there are willing to offer u the scholarship, dun ever doubt ur ability.... no one is offered a scholarship by chance....
so, good luck and happy hunting.... :)

the first thing you can try is to contact them to see if they actually have a scheme to sponsor students, like YTL or Sime Darby for instance, they have a student-sponsoring programme.

Since you are into Biotech, i doubt there's many companies in Malaysia that give scholarship or sponsor students. Perhaps you can try to apply scholarship from the United States as well, since you are going to complete your A-Levels. Most universities in the States offer scholarship, but u must be really good, i think.

my story is a simple one..
i sat for my spm in 2001 and got the result in 2002.. after that i applied for everything.. included da TESL course.. it was a long process.. the application, the interview and the final result.. i was in UIA about 2 weeks taking an English course before i got the final result for TESL.. full scholarship from the government.. how lovely.. so, i withdrew from UIA and now i'm studying in IPBA.. somewhere around KL.. nearly 3 years already.. still 3 years more to go.. next year i'll be enrolled to VUW in NZ.. so wish me luck, guys! :)

Hmm.. acting skills is it? I'm not a pro but with my current status, should be enough... hope so... By the way, I don't stay in Victoria Hall, I am in Oldham Hall..
btw i'm a GIRL..not a brother! LOL...only a sister can care so much for their sibblings..no offense to the guys out there.
So sorry about that... Maybe cause the name Deedee sounds like younger brother in Mandarin... Yeah, sisters DO care more... This fact is partially proven true by my two elder brothers at home!
Thanks for all the advices given. Really appreciate it. But anyone who has other interesting alternatives, please feel free to enlighten me! :D Going back for interview is a valid reason, but I am afraid that doing so more than once or twice is not so appropriate.. for the MOE, at least! Will need to find excuses...

Yeah, it's a little hard for me to adjust to the ADFP system when I first come here. But nonetheless, it's nothing too difficult. It's rather unpractical for me to tell you the process through here. Why don't you go and ask around, especially if there's anyone whom you know who went to the States. THere are only 2 SAT centers in Malaysia, i reckon... one in Subang, one in Penang.

Hmm... i agree.. i dunno how does JPA select their students... our results are almost the same... but some may get Germany and some, like me, got USA!!! However, there are more boys then girls in Germany A level Program.
Well.. for those who didnt get straight A1, for my year, two of my frens got KOREAN program... they r now in Korea ade... so... dun give up if u din get straight A1... u may still get korea or Japan...
ADFP program.. its different from UK system.. thats for sure... the application process for Uni is quite tedious compared to UK uni... we have to write a lot of essays... get recommendation letters... Hmm.. i wont deny that its quite troublesome... especially for those who dont live near KL... we have to go back home quite often just to settle the forms.... but.. its worth it!!!!!! :D

definitely, u have to sit for SAT and maybe even SAT2.... and with ur A-levels, u can get lot's of transferable credit.... and University of California- Davis requires A-level for admittance... dunno how true...

I can't speak much for you on this as I'm an ADFP student, definitely not ALM. If you get to UK, i think they'll appoint you a university, so u dun have to take the trouble to apply, i guess (hey ALMs, correct me if i'm wrong!!!). But many, perhaps most, ALM students have to undergo twinning program... I've a friend who has to go to a university (in Scottland??? or Ireland???) and come back to some Malaysia university to complete his course. It actually depends heavily on your country and course.

Uhmm... There's a wide array of universities in US for you to choose, and they rank according to their majors. I have very little knowledge of what each universities are looking for. Some look for special talents, some with unique personal background, some co-curricular activities, some high SAT score. But still, you have to achieve certain scores in SAT to get into the unis.
It's good for you to check it out from your nearby MACEE (Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange). They should be able to guide you through the process. But beware that they charge high fee too...
any uni's u guys would like to recommend for biotechnology?
Top-notch universities would be Havard, Yale, and John Hopkins. Others like Wisconsin Madison, Penn State, and more ...

it's safe to say that most Unis in US RECOGNIZE a-levels... it is not a requirement though, except for UCs (University of California universities).. in fact, most top universities would prefer their inernational applicants to have a complete 12-year education (i.e. completed form 6 or a-levels)...
but one thing is for sure: u need SAT and TOEFL...
ohya, under JPA, thanks to the stunts of our dear Pn. Suriana, those applying to UC Davis dun need A-levels dy... hehe.. special case... :)

I think you can find a lot of friends doing A-levels in Taylor but still apllying to US's universities. I think they can help you more because they have the most current info. One of them just get accepted into MIT. A-level is more preferable than INTEC prep course because it is widely accepted in US, and you will stand a better chance of getting a UC school if you apply using A-level. There is some senior from JPA who did thier A level in Taylor and Sunway before they come to US. I think they will be a big help too, if you have a ny specific question that need to be answered, feel free to email or msg me, i will be glad to contact them for u.

I think probably we are getting out of the topic of this thread (sorry, its all my fault! hehe). I would like to look for scholarships for A-levels students.....(STPM, A-levels equivalent). There are not many scholarships available for A-levels student right? Mostly are for STPM students to pursue their tertiary education in public unis (public u's dun accept A-levels). There are a lot of scholarships for Form5 leavers as well. But for A-levels students (or maybe it is just me), what other scholarships available for local or overseas studies in Science? So far, I had only found scholarships like Yayasan Sime Darby and YTL Foundation. I just applied to Yayasan Sime Darby recently and I dont know whether they accept my forecast results or they wanted actual results, just try anyway. Not much info I can get from their website , though. Anyone with information about scholarships for A-levels students to pursue Science degree, kindly let me know... Thanks in advance...

You can try the ASEAN university scholarship. I think you'll be fully subsidized, but it is heavily bonded. You have to work for the government for about 5 years or more, i think. If you think that you can cope up with Singapore's university's standard, give it a try. NUS should be good for biotech. If not, SMU.

in kuching, the interview was conducted in 6s...we all went in 6 by 6..most of us had the debate style interview...which was fine with me coz i had experience debating...but it was not exactly a debate. 6 of us were divided into the pro side n the con side. then given the topic, we were given the chance one by one to talk. my topic was patriotisme in malaysia, i think. only a few minutes given, i said my stuff n tad was it.
BE YOURSELF!!!
Wow! The interview was conducted with 12 people in a room! From the sound of it I wouldn't even call it an interview anymore, it's a debate. Did the interviewers give you a choice in your language - english or bm? I hope they do and I'll certainly opt for english if it's a debate. How long was the time frame given for a person to give his point. I'll be glad if it's a debate and I'll be even happier if it's a one on one interview (gives you more time with the interviewer).
Thanks

Where do JPA send the students after they agree to give us the scholarship (I applied for dentistry in UK) and when will we know the results of the scholarship?
Mmm...Dentistry in UK... my fren applied for this and got it !!!! well.. for my fren's case.. .she is not doing her prep course in INTEC.... she is now in Kolej MARA Banting (Ask me if u want to know more about this kolej.. there is a long long story for this kolej... feel lucky that im in INTEC.. hehe.. ) instead.. she's studying IB course... Heard that this course is quite difficult... has to study sciences and languages... the exam is quite hard too... but.. When there is a will.. there is a way rite ? she seems to be enjoying herself too !!! good luck ya!
I think ALM is mostly for medic... not dentistry.. correct me if im wrong... JPA wont neccesarily send u to the country u apply... most of us who got USA din even apply USA for our 2nd choice... i guess it depends on ur luck ! :) and the result will be out around JUne... for ur information... u usually will have about a week time only to prepare for registration after u receive the letter... this year... we had to register on 10th June !

IB stands for international baccalaureate which is a pre uni course if you are refering to the diploma level. IB was intentionally created for students who travel a lot (moves from one country to another). IB has an international and standard curriculum which means that wherever the student go and if he is under IB he will be studying the same curriculum and will be using a familiar educaiton system everywhere. Until now, IB has been adopted by around 100 countries. And the course is a two year course. :D

err...no..it was in 6s..meaning there was 6 ppl all in all...
i don quite remember did they give us a choice to speak in which language bt my grp, we all spoke in english..so tad shudnt be a prob for u...they only gave abt 5 minutes or so..probably bcoz my grp was the last grp in the morning so they r desperate for lunch break...
it wont be a one to one interview, trust me..there r juz too many applicants....esp tis yr got so many straight As students....there might be more than 6 in a grp tis time, i would presume...
n if u ask me, i think the interview is juz a formality....as long as u haf the grades they cant deny u the scholarship..BUT..as i said...tis yr there r juz too many applicants so they juz might use the interview to sieve students....
so as long as u can speak english fluently....there will be no problem...trust me..

it's not really a debate. more like a group discussion. during my interview, we were given a statement, mine was 'malaysia as the centre of international education' something like tat, and we were given a few minutes to think about it and then give our opinion one by one. of course, if u disagree with the person preceeding u, u can always refute it but stating your point will be fine enough.
no, the choice of language was not given to us. however, we were asked to answer in english, but there was one question we had to answer in bm. each person is given about 2 minutes, if u talk longer than that, the interviewer might just stop you.
don't worry too much bout the interview, as what gal flower said, if you are fluent in english, you'll be fine. besides, the interview isn't the main deciding factor, i doubt if it ever was. some said it was just as a formality to reject other applicants.

Is that so? It sounds so depressing and disheartening to those who didn't get straight A1's...

Gal_flower and Jaclyn,
Thank you both so much for providing me with information regarding the JPA scholarship interview. I'm glad that the language medium used is mostly english. Gal_flower, when you mentioned that you went in 6 by 6, I thought it was a 6 by 6 debate style as in 6 people as the pros and the other 6 as the cons. Thanks for clarifying it. I do admit that there are quite a number of straight a's this year and I think that they are going to use the interview to narrow up the good ones (besides looking at your co-curricular activities and other qualifications). And Jaclyn, thank you for describing your interview, it was indeed an eye opener for me. I'm glad that it's more of a discussion because the time frame given is pretty short i must say - 5 minutes (in your case 2 minutes). Thank you once again and I wish you the best in everything.
Melvin

dont worry lilet...all you have to do is choose the right course to the right country...such as this..if you wanna do engineering, choose USA.if medic/dent/pharm,opt UK.
i dont think jpa is sending engineering students/science and tech students to UK.so by playing the right tune with jpa,u save jpa work loads.and increase your chance of getting the scholarship.
bear also in mind that not all straight A1s will take the scholarship.if you wanna do engineering, you have better chance since i guess and i assume 1/2 of straight A1s wanna read medic/dent/pharm...
1/4 wanna read sciences..
and so you are left to compete with a smaller figures..
if you think that way...you have better chance...even if you dont get the 1st intake..APPEAL AND APPEAL AND APPEAL to JPA.if you want JPA scholarship so badly, prove to them you are stubborn and deserve it.
it's better ending up at private colleges as 2nd intakers.u'll have blast.
finally...remember this: God knows what is best for you.what is the used of studying overseas when you will have more fun at local unis?though this may sound like pulling you down, i think there's rainbows after each storm.
but like i say..hendak seribu daya, tak hendak seribu dalih..if you want jpa scholarship, prove to them that you deserve it..

My experience during the interview was before i went into the interview, the officer asked me to check my result, and delibrately highlighted my A2... sigh ... i think that's what attracts them, not the A1s.....

That's their policy during our year. They look for straight 1As and nothing else. Hopefully, with so many people getting straight 1As, the policy will change this year to take into account co-curricular activities.

Back from a long hiatus (holidaying!!!)...
I would say that irrespective of what is JPA's consideration, prepare your best case for the interview. Anyhow, it is better to showcase yourself well for the interview. This is especially true for those who got 1 or slightly more A2s.
If you could let the interviewers watch you in awe with your knowledge, skills, communications, leaderships etc, you will do fine. The most important thing is Selling Yourself. You need to do so tactfully, without showing that you are too proud.
Say a topic on Education Hub. Talks about all the initiatives by Malaysia on this aspect. Compare to other applicants who just state the basic facts, who shines? Go to remag.recom.org to read about the Pointers on Scholarship Interviews. It was compilation of advice by many ReCom members.
A lot of times when the interviewers ask you whether you wish to accept the scholarship to a certain countries, think very carefully before you say yes. If you say yes, you will almost certainly get that particular country. Remember that it would be very difficult for you to appeal to change the country given to you, since you yourself has said ok during the interview. If you say no, your chance for scholarship will be very slim. So, think carefully then.
I would look at the interview as a very subjective case. A basic good advice is to send a thank you email to the interviewer. Check out about the email of the interviewer, or may be name and you try to find out about the email of the interviewer. That will help make you shine.
Arrive early. May be you get a chance to talk to those interviewers, before the interview. I had friend who got invited for lunch by the interviewers. I myself was there at the interview centers (INTEC) early enough to catch a chat with an old man, whom I thought to be a parent of another student. We talked for some 15 minutes and we had a good chat, and of course, I sell myself a little bit too. Little did I know that he was an interviewer of JPA (although of another center).
During the waiting period, I was talking non-stop with other students. We talked about many stuffs and one of it was Mensa. And little did I know that this question was posted to a few students before me, and the question they got was Mensa. And apparently some of them talked about me and Mensa. So, that's good publicity for me.
And use some tacts in replying the questions. I was asked whether I am willing to accept the low wages in government servant. I posed the question back to the interviewers, by saying that they too were gov servants and they seem to be enjoying the job. I talked about the job security, service to nation and a lot of fringe benefits, from EPF, Socso, to low government loan etc. I calculated to them about the amount of money they saved from gov loan etc. And I also calculated to them the amount they are going to spend on me for the scholarship, so I said that those are also part of my future salaries over the next 30+ years etc and etc. I can't imagine, but I spend 5 minutes talking about this.
Then a favorite question during my time, would you want to accept a scholarship on medicine. My brief answer to them was something like: "I am not qualified and there are other better candidates to serve the nation. We want those who have a heart to be a doctor to serve the patients. It would not be nice if I choose to fake saying that I like medicine and later break the bond. It is just a disservice to nation and I am depriving other student who may serve the nation better by being a better doctor. And I mentioned about my poor results. 2A2s. " Their reply was that I got A1 in Biology. Again I play with figures. I show them that there are whatever percentage of students get A1 in Biology, that translates to about a certain number( I forgot the number already, but that is some thousands). So, I said there are only so many scholarships and odds are within those A1s, I may be those that get lower scores.
In fact, I don't know whichever above may help or not help... That may not be so relevant now, since it is group interview, but you will never know.
No matter what topics you get, use some points on your personal thing that goes along with national agenda and also say something that attracts the interviewers. It is subjective.

Well, my interview was a screwed up. I got this topic - Social Issue. Easy, rite? We are supposed to discuss it in a forum way. However, when we just finished discussing one factor that leads to social ill, there's this girl (I guess she's too nervous thinking that she needs to say something) suddenly jump to the consequences and started listing all the consequences all to herself. Because of this, the interviewers said my group was no good... :(

Then, does overall group performance influences individual's chance of getting scholarship aside from personal presentation?

I would think that the individual performance in ensuring the flow of the group discussion will help. So, if the group performs very well in overall, that would help everyone's improve a bit. I would say that say, someone in the group, helped to make the discussion more orderly, and it would help reflect positively on that person.

Thanks phantom for the reassurance! :) Am aware that I have to choose very carefully... The bad thing is that I don't want to do Engineering, but am more interested in the Science category... 8) Appeal is not a bad idea, but it takes time and my ASEAN bill is going to shoot up the longer I take.. Haha.. :D

Hmm... juz like what i said b4.. different places have different styles of interview... so... dun be nervous if its not like what u r expecting!
For my case.. there is NO given time for each candidate... We have to FIGHT to give our points... it is an open discussion... u can talk whenever u want... so... FIGHT for any chance available.. try to think as fast as u can then straight away give ur point when someone just end his sentence... this is what i did to survive in my interview session.. hehe..
Well.. to have a higher chance to get the schorlarships... choose something which is less competitive... however... i know that it is VERY VERY WRONG to tell u to change ur intended major juz to get the scholarships... what i can say is... think carefully... maybe u also like engineering instead of Medic ??
Good luck to all of u ~

Slyvia: Yea.. IB is juz like what Melvin described... according to my fren... its a bit hard to study.. but... im sure with great determination.. i can do it for sure..
Well.. "Long Story" means that there are a lot of stories (Mostly Negative one. hehe) of the college in which my fren is studying now.. for example... gals have to wear baju kurung everyday... boys and gals cannot study at the same table in library... only after all boys leave the cafeteria gals can enter and eat... boys and gals take turn to go out during weekends...
However... the facilities are better then INTEC one i guess... since u have to be locked in the college.... hehee... :P
i've actually visited Banting and KMYS for tennis matches.
they're not too bad. they have all the basic facilities. here's what i gather from my rather limited exposure to all three places.
both banting and kmys have good facilities like laundry rooms, libraries, courts/gym, and the rooms are pretty decent. they even have air-con and in-room internet for kmys. the sucky part about banting is that they don't have electric outlets in their room. so they have to charge their handphones outside, at a centralized place with outlets somewhere along the corridor. during my time, uitm had the worst rooms among the 3 places.
however i liked uitm because we really had more freedom. yes, at uitm there are "stupid" dresscodes too. but it's much much better than that of banting/kmys. i guess it's because they're in kampung area and the kampung folks are really sensitive about dresscodes.
at uitm too, it's not uncommon to see ppl hanging out with each other regardless of gender. also, we have more freedom of mobility. not forgetting to mention that it's much easier to catch a bus to MidValley or take Komuter/Putra to KLCC or other places. and there's Giant section 18, lots of mamak stalls, lots of cybercafes, and section 25 (for more variety of food) is not too far away.
of course, all these freedom may come at a price. to make a sweeping statement (which i really shouldn't haha), ppl at banting/kmys perform better academically because they have less distraction and honestly, they have nothing better to do than to study. if not mistaken, they even have study hours... sports only in the afternoon/evening i think. unlike at uitm, you could just go makan-makan jalan-jalan everyday without any supervisor forcing you to study study study or sleep at a stipulated time (i'm pretty sure they have lights out hours).
this information is 2 yrs old. so please correct me if i'm wrong:)
