i really need help....
i plan on doin my alevels at help and i'm uncertain on whether i should take further maths ....
coz my prob is i want to do engineering after that,,,and some ppl told me that i have to take further maths...
is it ok if i just take physics, chemistry and maths??
another thing is i plan to go to Australia or singapore to further my studies after that ...will they accept me for engineering if i dont take further maths? btw do we learn mechanics and statistics in maths?

pls give ur comments...i really need to make a decision

This thread is redundant. Go search for an earlier thread about taking FM in A Level under the Education forum.

i suppose u are thinking about Help's July intake.

U can ask other recomers who are currently doing engieering, and i can assure u many of them entered university to do engineering with just maths.

The general requirements for engineering is Maths and physics plus another subject of ur choice, however if u are planing to do chem eng, then chemistry is compulsary. So most students usually take maths, physics and chemistry. With these subjects, u can go into almost any field.

Yes, u will learn mechanics and statistics, however i must stress that u will only be taking one unit from both streams only.(ie M1 and S1). If u opt to do double maths, u will complete every pure maths units, and 5 applied maths units out of 6. Do u see, u do learn a lot in further maths, but the bad thing if u are entering in july is that u will need to complete ur pure maths(7 units) in just one year, which is really hectic.

Further maths helps u, but it is not necessary to take it during ur A-levels.

I am now doing civil engineering in NUS. Before going to NUS, I took the combination of Phy, Math and Chem when I did my A-Levels in Taylor's College. It is enough to gain admission into engineering course. If you wish to do Bioengineering, maybe you should take Bio. Do check out the uni website for more details about the admission before you make your decision.

For the engineering course, I had to take two Math modules in my first year. They are pretty demanding if you do not take Further Math. You might have the upperhand, but it is manageable actually even if you do not take Further Math. So, it is up to you.

All the best.

thanx for all the info..
so it looks like i'll be taking further maths and will see how it goes...
if i feel it's dropping my grades i drop it later on...

books are dirt cheap.......we buy the 'alternative versions'

In july u will be coming in..........If u are weak in ur add maths, i suggest u do not take FM in july, it will kill u, the workload is tremendous, because u need to finish 7 pure maths units(books) in just 7 months, not including ur applied maths, physics and chemistry......in 7 months u go from simple form 4 completion of square.....to loci of complex numbers.....there are some tough stuff in between too......

However if u can manage, it will be good.......even if u can't try not to drop FM during ur first term, trust me, there is much to gain.....PM me if u want to know why.

Yeah, if you can manage it, do go for it. However, it really depends on what you want to do too. I'm not too sure whether chem will help in certain fields of engineering (need to check the requirements of the universities you plan to apply to). However, if you have FM background in A-levels, life will be easier in uni (at least for the first few semesters). After all, math is everywhere, i believe that anyone who has a good math background can do most fields of studies. I did FM, Math and Physics, but no chem and it was ok. I got into EE for Melbourne U (but didnt go there though).

Good luck! :)

thanx pathfinder...
i'm taking chem coz i like the subject and my bro advised me to take it...so i'll try it..and it looks like i'll be taking FM ...so see how it goes....
i plan to do aerospace eng or mechanical eng specializing in aerospace after that.....
with spore or monash the likely destinations...
any advice?pls tell me

Hi there! I'll be taking Aerospace Engineering in NTU this year. For A-levels I took F Maths too. I took F Maths because I believed it would help me in university because i was intent on studying engineering. And I think it is really interesting (although I kinda disliked the statistic parts of it...). But F Maths is not a compulsary entry requirement to any course in Singapore. You can always check their websites for more info...
