As Recom keeps on expanding, an idea came into my mind. As we are such a diverse group, I believe that there are many interests among many Recom members. To specifically cater to that purpose, I would suggest that we create Special Interest Groups (SIG) - a phrase I borrow from Mensa.

So, basically we can have SIG in many aspects, like ReCom Investment SIG, ReCom Unix SIG, ReCom Reading SIG, ReCom English Premier League SIG etc.

I would like to hear more suggestions on this and if anyone has any idea on how we could implement this, feel free to suggest it out! With this, we could have people who may be interested in some aspects of interests, could join Recom and meet with like-interest people!

Feel free to comment on this and I hope to hear many responses!

Welcome to Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football.

You have created the Private Group called Recom and entered
the team called I^/|NN3R in that group. To allow other people to
join this group send them the Group ID# (65846) and the Password
(recom).
Remember, it is the Group ID#, not the group name, that other people
must
use to join your group.

That's a brilliant idea chenchow!!! It would certainly make our ReCom more interesting, appealing and (add some more adjectives here) ... It would be great if we have some kind of section of the website for this SIG idea ... like we could have subforum for the SIGs like what we have for the ReCom magazine ... only people in the group can talk, have to apply to join etc etc stuff like that ... I'll see if we can have those in our forums ... I think it'll most probably be very simple to implement ... let see if more people are interested ..

BTW, I'd like to start Anime+Nihongo SIG ... I'm pretty sure there are quite a number of anime fans among our members ... anyone?

i wonder if anyone in recom is capable of doing fansubs for animes... maybe we could start our own fansub? =)

that's not impossible .. we have schye, math, cloudberry and braechno in Japan so they could provide the raws .. maybe they could also send the translation but I think we have some here who knows japanese (a little also counts) .. then there are also some video experts here .. hey, we have enough team! ... anyway, let's not dive into the topic yet .. let's wait till we have this SIG group thingy .. then we could work on this wonderful idea ^_^ ..

Thanks for the support on this SIG idea. I think we could deal with it, like the subforum we have for the ReMag. I am sure Lukman knows how to do it. Lukman, since you are free and bored, I am sure you would be willing to do it. Guys, we really have to thank Syamsul, Yusuf and Lukman for those programming part, they have been doing a lot in it!

I would suggest those that would like to start or join any SIG, just mention here. As long as you can have 3 more extra people who share the interest, it can have a go! What do you guys think? With this SIG, we can have those interested people, who would really delve into doing stuff in it.

Thanks schye for starting the English Premier League one! Am sure many other people have other interests, so I really hope that you guys can suggest those things up!

So, get set and get into action! As of now, I guess Schye will be the SIG Coordinator for English Premier League and luke will be the SIG Coordinator for Anime and Nihongo.

Is there any chess or chinese chess enthusiasts(or maniacs) here?

chenchow

chess i am sure there are. Hui Lin, Kenny etc are chess addicts too. They were formerly state player. I am sure there are more chess addicts our there... or should i say chess enthusiasts, as chiunlin calls.

I've explored the forum admin function and I found out it's very easy to create a subforum for each SIG complete with permission control (eg: all can read and view, only moderators can post and poll etc etc) ... I've also examined the PHP code for forum listings on the front page and I think it's fairly easy to exclude the SIG topics from the listings or maybe only shows the topics from the SIGs that the current users are in ... (have to do this or else I believe it would take up most of the space there ^_^0) ... I have to ask Syamsul or Bachok or Kevin about this first before I make any changes to the forum structure ...

anyway, have interest in some stuff? create an SIG here@<hidden> !!

Thanks a lot, Lukman. You are always efficient. So, I really hope that Recom members would back this SIG strongly, if it sounds good to you! It would be an added feature to Recom!

chenchow, masterof_none and I have already planned and created this SIG idea ... click the following link for further details:

What is Special Interest Group (SIG)? (http://www2.recom.org:8000/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=289)

By the way, maybe the SIG groups should be listed at the bottom of the Forum page as i think the other threads are more important and have more readers. Further more, the members of SIG definitely know where it is hence putting them at the bottom maybe better (as long as we keep this thread up top 10 OR move it to join recom thread so that new member will know about it). We may make a list of SIG group on the main page too which looks likes our creative corner now.

Thanks Schye. All about SIG that appears on the main page is temporary. Lukman is doing a separate section for them. He has more or less got the design done, and I think he is testing it out. Once it is done, SIG would move to separate section! So, it is just temporary only!

yeah, I'm working on a portal system for the SIGs ... I already finished the design for the "SIG Portal" ... what left is the SQL functions and stuff, and the new section would be ready then .. however I couldn't start working on it yet since I'm at RPI right now so I don't have access to an SQL server (which I installed on my PC) .. so until I return to Cornell, the section won't be finished .. sorry you have to wait ^_^

Dear Schye,

I am also interested in the Investment SIG group. I think that we should also work to get a professional who knows alot about this subject matter so that he/she can advise us. What do you think? Are there any other interested members? ;)

investment SIG.
What are you planning to do?

silverblue

I am not sure... there are lots of things we can do

eg
1) learn how to invest our money (in stocks, bonds, property, etc etc) and how to go about it
2) start a mutual investment plan among our group... long term, short term etc
3) learn from each others' experiences in investment
4) invite professionals/experts to give advice or guidance
5) research about how investment works in the financial world and its importance
6) create a project to teach people smart investment techniques

anything else u can suggest?

I am also interested in Investment SIG. Looks like we have at least 3 interested members. Hope to get a few more, before we start.

I think Ying Ying (I have posted an article of her in another forum thread of Working In Wall Street or something like that). To those who hasn't read it. She is a ReCom member, currently a senior. She has worked in JP Morgan over last summer and she got a permanent job by JP Morgan Chase in Wall Street. She knows a lot about investment and am sure she can help a lot.

On what we could do, thanks silverblue for the details. We can start from basic and slowly we can share more and more knowledge and we learn together. Once we have one more members, we can start the SIG, since the requirement is 4 members to start. Lukman is working on the interface, so it would be great!

I think this wont be a problem after we get the PRO-project done --- in process though
