IMO, this field is not as popular as medicine or pharmacy.
If you take up optometry, then you'll be a qualified optometrist. Which means you are able to make spectacles and contact lenses for others.
To do this course locally, I think UKM has this course. International University College Twintech (IUCTT) also offers this course, although I'm not sure whether it has been recognised or not.

ah...thats the difference between an optometrist and an opthalmologist. An optometrist only specializes in eye care which includes makin specs, contact lenses and minor eye probs. Only an opthalmologist can perform surgeries. To be an opthalmologist, you need to be a medical doctor first and then further specialize into the eye. Hope this info helps.

well, i not taking optometry but i am a UKM student, same faculty with optomery. (my room mate taking optometry)
There has only 1500 optomerists and opticans in malaysia, still need a lot of optomerists, has a high demand in this field. Don't worry about it. The most important is your interest. :)

An ophthalmologist is a specialization of medicine, not related to optometry.
I know around 5 people doing optometry in my uni.

oh..tnkx for ur information..totally agree with what ariesgal said...interest is the more important...actually im very interested in pharmacy...but doing pharmacy in any local private unis/uni colleges...are very xpensive....and i just got to know optometry has the 'same rank' with pharmacy...so in the end,now i ended up in iuctt optometry...before that,i was actually offered to do pharmacy in UGM and ITB(both indo)...but since too far and having money difficulties...so i didnt go there...at the same time, local uni gave me a sc course that i dont like...n i didnt accept too

optometry actually earns more than a pharmarcists in Australia i think. The highest is Dentistry followed by medicine then optometry, saw it in my friend's lecture notes.

how come dentists can earn more than doctors...i tot doctors earn more than dentists...yeah,i heard be4 optometrists earn more than pharmacists too....but the plight in m'sia rite now is that...every single optical shop u visit...u can find more opticians than optometrist...actually,according to the law, opticians cant make contact lens or even TOUCH ur eyes to fit in the contact lens..coz they do not provide primary care...so when next time,u enter an optical shop...ask for a optometrist for safety wise..haha..i heard places like uk,us and australia..they do not call optical shop...instead they call optical shop as optometry clinic..where everytime u want to make glasses, that person have to book 1st...so pro...haha...
actually same thing happening for pharmacy in msia...in uk,us or even japan..they have a rule whereby beside a doctor clinic there must be a pharmacy....

Opticians are not responsible, nor trained, for eye examinations or treatment solutions for eye disorders. They help you pick our your frames and adjust them to fit comfortably.
Optometrists are doctors who perform annual examinations to treat any vision problems and detect signs of disease and abnormal conditions. Examinations may also include testing for glaucoma, color perception, depth, and the ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Optometrists must be licensed, have a Doctor of Optometry degree, and pass a state board examination.[LaserSurgeryForEyes.com (webmaster@<hidden>)]
:laugh Optometrists usually have to obtain professional qualifications such as Degree in Optometry. But opticians by training (such as undergoing training in a shop).
