Study awards to seek out future leaders
DENNIS CHUA, KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23:
The Maxis Scholarship For Excellence is a step towards creating 'towering' and 'glocal' Malaysians.
It offers qualified Malaysians a chance to pursue post-graduate studies overseas and is aimed at encouraging graduates with working experience, aged below 30, to study in world class universities.
Megat Zaharuddin said the company will allocate up to RM400,000 per scholar and it will support five a year. They will pursue two-year post-graduate courses.
He said the recipients are not bonded to work for the company, but it expects them to collaborate with one another to promote world class standards of work in society.
The minimum criteria for applicants is a second class honours undergraduate degree from a Government-recognised university.
Applicants must have actively participated in extra-curricular activities or voluntary bodies, and must have achieved academic excellence.
They must also have a good knowledge of the country and a good grasp of global issues.
The scholarship is for students pursuing Life Sciences, Engineering,
Medicine, Arts, Business, Management, Law and Government Studies, in 18 universities in the US, Britain and Switzerland, among others.
Successful applicants for the January and September 2006 intakes will be notified by November this year and May 2006, respectively.
