Hey There!
How are you all? I'm new here. Just thought I'd introduce myself and give a desperate plea for help all in the one post. I am an Journalism Honours student at Tunku Abdul Rahman University in Petaling Jaya, and as part of my ongoing project for my honours, I am required to research a subject of my choice - A Cyber-Ethnography of Video Gaming.
I currently have a survey running online, it won't take you too much time on answering the questions. Your personal opinion are greatly welcome and the more you say would help my thesis better.
I'm really trying to get a good response so if some of you guys could fill it in I would really appreciate it. Also if you could pass the link on to others it would be a big help. The more responses I get the better.
If the mods of the board could also encourage some people to fill it in I'd forever be in-debted to you.
Thanks very much!
-Apple Teo

anyway,
age: 20
gender: Male..
Q1 : FPS, RPG, RTS, MMORPG
Q2 : It's challenging(some AI are really good)... It's competitive(can play against other ppl)... It's a way to de-stress(although taking computer games too seriously is stressful, but that's another matter) ... It's a relatively cheap kinda entertainment(a game will last you quite sometime)... The graphics are wonderful, the storylines are interesting... It's a good way to socialize(a bunch of friends getting together to play a multiplayer game) and a good activity to kill time(good if u know the limit, good if u know what kinda frens to mix with, good as in efficient in killing time)...

Q1: RPG and FPS
Q2: mainly to release stress after classes. but here I would like to make a remark that I think playing shooting games (be it FPS or 3PS) really improved my navigation skill. After playing so many shooting games ranging from the oldies DOOM2 and Hexen to Half-Life and Max Payne to the superb DOOM3, I can feel that remembering ways to go around places has become relatively easy for me. I strongly believe the games I played did contributed to this.

1. I play strategy and FPS games. Currently engrossed in battelfield 2 and Warcraft 3: Frozen throne's DoTA. Other than that i play simulation games as well, such as Freespace, Freelancer, the very old Jane's simulators. I also play a little bit of racing like Underground 2, as well as a little bit of The Sims.
Some of the games i've played:
Ground control 1 and 2, half life 1 and 2 together with cs, Soilder of fortune, command and conquer series, Doom 1,2 and 3, quake 3 arena, Unreal tournament, UT 2k3, UT 2k4, Halo, Area 51, Battlefield series, VOS, Gunbound, homeworld.. and many more..
2. I play games to release stress as well as for leisure. Currently though, DoTA is getting too serious and its actually quite stressful. I believe computer games also helps me to gain knowledge of physics as well as to improve my english. Furthermore, games can actually stimulate the mind to think rationally. I believe i've adapted many things that i've learnt in games, such as driving skills, spotting things, avoiding obstacles, etc.. haha!

Q1: Ages Of Empires !!! (and civ3.)
Q2: I think in my case it was just habit/addiction. was forced into learning the game as peer pressure mounted at one piont in life, after I discovered bigger and better things, I gravitated towards them and away from moving graphical elements on a PC. But this habitual thing... hard to destroy... must play....
ok, sorry, i need to play another ronud now. feel like drug addict...

Q 1 - Sims, SimCity
Q 2 - Started playing Sims during my pre-teen years. An extention of playing dolls & doll-houses in a simulating format?? Later, the SimCity series were like 'power trips'. The games were simply absorbing.

Hmm... so it's true. Gals love to play Simcity and the Sims. Maybe I'm stereotype, but maybe it's true. I've seen Simcity lovers playing Starcraft. OMG... I'm speechless... You should see the way they organize their structures.

These demos are for you or maybe you've already got better. Games that fit the male stereotypes perfectly, an extention of toy guns ? :)

RTS and first-person type, mostly single player games, not much multiplayer. black and white (the board game, mind you)
the storyline, the most interesting it is, the better it is, and of course, popularity ;p
