Just wondering, are there any other people who enjoy jogging/running? I do it when I have time, although I'm not that fast (2.4 km timing between 9min40 sec to 10 min 20 sec). What's it like out of SEA? Do you guys jog or run at all in the States/Europe/Australia/NZ/etc?

What's your favourite brand of running shoe?

well, im based in the UK. and am a GrEAT fan of running too! nevertheless, my times here are not an inch close to urs though...haha
well, back in Malaysia, i do participate in mostly 10k runs organised aorund KL/PJ....and am a member of the PaCEsetters Athletics CLub as well.....go check out their website:
they have a really good layout for the club's events/organisation.i reckon this is the most active and most well-organised athletics club around the homeland!

anyways, have'nt been really going for much runs here myself cos weather is crazily cold! not much motivation to run too....furhtermore, when i was at the one of the BUSA cross contry events recently, i must say that the runners here are one hell of a fantastic lot! yours truly here only managed a bottom 10% position then.....haha!!
but events here, i must say a really well organised, n hope to make it for the london (half) marathon next (most prb wont be ready by then yet).
\
malaysian runners are a dying breed!! therefore t's our job here to promote a healthy, running community ..

ooh..and bout the shoes, i personally prefer Reebok....never go for Nike....cos its moreso style over function;the rubber peels off damn fast.....adidas workmanship is great also..and New Balance is a superb brand too, though not so stylish! but i believe NB caters mostly for the market with wide feet>>

a good thread indeed!!

well, i suppose so reebok is the best so far, thouggh i havent personally tried adidas.... but then again, i believe that adidas climacool range is ridiculous..water would splash into the sole whenever one steps into puddles!

I like Reebok as well.
I have just read a review of latest running shoes.
It claimed Nike as the best latest running shoes - but it is expensive. Reebok, Adidas and Asics are on the list as well.

I bought Nike twice and yar, they usually have some problems with the rubber soles... I think people just buy it because of the brand.

If you are really into running/jogging, Asics would be a good investment. Heard that it's quite pricey in Malaysia though... can come down to Singapore to buy, cheaper. Adidas and New Balance also not bad.

Nike Free... i'm not sure about the newer ones, but the Nike Free 4.0 - 5.0 are not durable for running. There's a design flaw, where the mesh near the back heel will tear easily. Even for walking, the 2 pairs I bought (1 for myself, another for my bro), and another pair which my friend wore, tore within 6 months, and that's for daily wear and tear. If i were to wear it to run, don't think it's gonna last over 3 months...

Asics, and New Balance are pretty good brand for running shoes... Personally, I wear Adidas ClimaCool, that's because I run on treadmills most of the time... and even if i run outdoor, the weather in the States are so predictable, and there is not much puddle of water that can't be avoided... I'm on the look out for a new pair of shoes, waiting to go back to the running pro shop back in Ann Arbor to get some professional advice on that.

Enough of shoes. Yes, I like running too. It's hard to get the miles in during the normal semester, but, now in the summer, I have been really gung ho, running 20-25 miles a week.

And to Oneforthelord, 9.40 - 10.10 for 2.4km (1.5miles) is pretty fast pace... but just wondering how far can you run at this pace.

My ultimate goal is to run a marathon next year. My current running pace is 8 minutes/mile.

Well, you can jog for whatever reason you want, but I hope to injure your feet, ankle, knees etc. is not the reason. And that's the reason to get good shoes.

Jogging will increase the bone mass of your ankle, that is what I know. Never heard of jogging can stimulate the growth hormone.

High intensity sprints will help growth hormones iirc

If GH's are stimulated then I've been cheated for the past 3 years of my life lol.

Hey by the by, is there anyone else (girls esp) who's starting to think twice about jogging because it enlarges the calf muscles?

Does that mean we should sprint instead of jog if we desire to grow taller?

By the way, could you please share the source which illustrates the point you made above?

What about, "jogging tones your legs?"
Sure, jogging will develop your muscles...but not in ways that will make you less attractive to the opposite sex. Enlargement, perhaps yes, but VERY VERY minimal. Of course I'm assuming the intensity of your jogging session is only for the purporse of keeping yourself fit, and not for the purpose of being on par with track athletes.
In simpler words, do jog. Your legs will look firmer and sexier. It turns us guys on :p

Hmm I didn't mean it that way. Apologies if anyone thought I meant jogging-> big muscles-> ugly.

I think it depends very much on the individual per se. Like, I'm pretty short, so my muscles (which would be normal on average girls) actually make me look.. uhm.. like a trunk lol. Firm? yes. Bulky? yes too.

Nevertheless, I agree with Destiny. It destresses and helps you sleep better too. And ntm letting you enjoy your food better :)

Based on a report, jogging in the long term can cause harm to the uterus. Can anyone provide further information on this?

Hmm... flat-footers like me would find jogging or running a painful sport, but would love swimming very much. Often after I jog, my feet feel terribly tired and sore, and sometimes even my knees are affected, too. But when it comes to swimming, especially free-style swimming, ten laps ain't a problem!

I realised that my feet are so flat that when I jog, the bulk of the impact on each foot is not all transmitted to the heels, but rather at the centre of my foot where it is soft. If I want to go for a jog, I need to jog in such a way that my heels land first before the rest of my feet do to prevent the pains.

Anyway, I wouldn't attribute jogging to being tall. I'm tall but I don't jog much. Rather, I used to swim.

Swimming is definitely a better form of exercise that builds up stamina.

As for jogging, those who have not jogged for a period of time would usually have to endure pains. By the way, according to my primary school coach, the correct way for jogging/running is to land on the front part of your foot.

Speaking about height, I think playing basketball and netball helps make one taller. This is said judging on the height of most of the basketball and netball players.

I'm 183 cm, and I ain't a basketball player. Having said that, my old classmate of mine, the shortest guy in my class at around 167 cm, is a three-point-scorer in basketball.

Of course, I'm not ruling out the possibility that basketball and netball can make you grow taller. But I don't think jogging can.

Yep, me too. I jog to increase my stamina and better train in the martial arts. I completely blank out when faced with a shoe that is way over the three digit line. I don't know about injuries though.

(2.4 km timing between 9min40 sec to 10 min 20 sec)
Heh. I don't even know if I can jog that distance in twice the length of time.....

A friend told me that jogging can be bad for the joints..hmm..
and it is also said that brisk walking is better for health as opposed to jogging.

any opinions on this?

Jogging in moderation is good. Over-exerting yourself in jogging (or in any other sports, for that matter) is bad. I haven't heard of uterus being harmed in the process though. If anything, the only thing I have heard is excessive cycling activity harm a man's fertility.

I thought the relationship is the other way round - people who are tall to begin with tend to be good in basketball and hence love to play it, and people who were short and grew tall naturally as they play basketball remain enthusiastic in basketball.

What is the heal and what is the ball of the foot? Is the heal the back part of the foot and the ball the front part?

Which should touch the ground first when running? Which should come up from the ground first?

Also, when running, if you breathe in through your nose does your stomach expand or collapse? what about when you breathe out?

Thanks for the advice.

cycyling also increase the risk of bone diseases(dang, forgot what's the disease!) if i'm not mistaken. remembered it from an article, as cycling don't really involve any impact, so our bone will not be tat dense compared to other athletes who plays impact sport such as football, rugby .....

and i do enjoy jogging too. is there really differences between running and jogging?
and when i stop jogging for lets say 2 or 3 days, then continuing it will make me feel more tiring, is that our physical's trick or just our mind?
and when i play football(soccer), sometimes i feel tired easily and sometimes not that tired, what's wrong with me actually?

can anyone tell me?
thanks u in advance!!

p.s. sometimes i jog(or run) for 3.++ km and sometime 2.++ km(in around 10mins), not really that good, haha...
