In malaysia intelectual properties might not be protected.

I suppose getting a book published overseas is more difficult as competition is tougher. I heard that publishers get thousands of manuscripts a month and very few actually make it to the bookstores.
not to be rude or anything, the author's father owns a publishing house......a great previlege......i guess she is from a well-to-do family, studying at KYUEM and all......

loosely speaking, here are a few reasons why publishing is hard in msia:
1. not many read (let alone buy) books
2. it is not cost effective to print in small quantities. this will be all the more a factor to consider when publishing for the first time, as the chances are you wont have a fan/reader base already, and you aren't sure how well your books will sell.
3. erm if you're self publishing you would need to be well informed/networked to penetrate the existing literary circles.. not only to sell the books directly to these people, but to get them to review your writing so as to build up a bit of credibility. a good review in mainstream papers will definitely help too (something like nurjainis would do.. though not much of a review there)\
4. if you're submitting your work through a publishing house, be prepared to part with a large cut of the revenue (and hopefully profit). Again, if you're a new writer, don't expect a bargain.
that said, if you're a good writer with lots of determination, you'll eventually make it (as is the case with most of your endeavours in life).
my apologies for nothing solid. i can't retrace any of my bookmarked articles or links which are in pc back home. perhaps someone more informed could enlighten us?
if you're into creative non-fiction/fiction writing, a good platform for you to see your work getting published would be inkyhands.net. Read about it here - http://bookreviewblog.blogspot.com/2005/11/inkyhandsnet-malaysian-online-litmag.html
inkyhands magazine (http://www.inkyhands.net), an online Malaysian litmag which features fiction and creative non-fiction writing, and "hopes to showcase the best that Malaysian writers (of ages 14-24) has to offer."

Seeing as to how difficult it is to publish a book in Malaysia, considering the fact that she actually went through the whole process of writing a book and publishing it, I think she deserves some respect for that.
Me? I have trouble writing a 7 pg paper.
