With few months going on in Recom, we are currently hoping to reposition ourselves and to have a much better outlook. Syamsul and Yusuf are working hard on it and we would be welcoming as much feedback as possible.

Remember that Recom is a gateway by Malaysian students for Malaysian students, so everyone can play a part in it and contribute in whatever form you feel comfortable.

Hope that this would start the ball rolling on improvements to come.

Thank you for your support!

ah hah! a resurrected thread! 8)

i just wanna suggest something for Recom News Network. i think having a simple menu bar at the top of the page with hyperlinks to the different sections may help improve usability. you know, for folks like me who are too lazy to scroll down.

also, have a "Back to top" link at the end of each section that links back to the menu bar...for folks like me who are too lazy to scroll up...

That's a good suggestion...

I would suggest that we have more newspaper links from more newspapers. We could get those links from the Weblinks section of Newspaper/Magazine in ReCom.

we can have multiple links... multiple articles... but i think a good way to encourage readership is to have a single highlight everyday. and display that special article along with the comments... so ppl will feel inclined to comment on the article. otherwise, most ppl will just browse through the headlines and not read the content/summary.

z's idea is somehow inclined towards our old-style news section than towards recomNN .. i'd like to second z on that ... seriously (sorry chenchow, masterof_none), since the new recomNN being introduced, I haven't really browsed the headlines and read the articles beneath them, partly because too many headlines entries compiled together in one single page are too uncatchy and make me kinda dizzy ... plus it takes eternity to load even for an EDU line (I think because the page retrieves the headlines from individual news sites)

I would hope that those active ReCom members can help bring the important topic, or hot news for the day or week, to be discussed at length in our forum. Another thing would be to share comment on news article after reading it!

I think we have done all we can to make them active ... forum too serious? we have Creative Corner and SIG ... want to share? well, Gallery, Forum and Creative Corner ... want to know people? we have Instant Messenger, Private Message and World module ... not to forget the Introduces Ourselves thread which is now given the 'honorable' sticky attribute -- it stays on the top of the forum listing on the front page ... what else?

now it's up to those ppl .. we can't force them .. everyone have his/her own life and priorities ..

my opinions:

a place to display members major(just below the avatar) to make a directive question(will it sounds rude),

and have a 'quote' function when typing a reply in order to make a multiple quote or something.....

Thanks for the opinion. I support the availability of some functions for members to put in their major. Luke, any suggestion on how to make it working? Thanks~!

To everyone, brainstorm. Really we have to thank Luke for a lot of development that we have in ReCom today, although we should not forget our dearest Syamsul and Yusuf!

Yeah, English~! And I think one of the side benefits of ReCom is that we get to read and write a lot in English.

For quoting, there is a function there...just keep looking on the top right hand corner.

to add new features to a module (especially if it's created by someone else) requires lots of work and headaches ... but to create a new module for those features is fairly easy ...

in other words, I can create a new module for the Majors thingy just like what I did to the users' locations using the World (http://www.recom.org/modules.php?name=World) module ... but if you want me to mess with the forum codes to add one line to under the avatar then I think I don't want the troubles ... sorry ...

I think something like what Luke has done for majors would be sufficient... May be not necessarily to have any graphic. What do others think?

erm....i just took a look at the forum guidelines and unless there's something wrong with my eyes, there's nothing saying that spamming the forum is not allowed.

it should explicitly mention that no unsolicited ads/spam are allowed, or somethign like that. thirdshifter?

I just have one problem with the policy of this website.

"If you have a problem with the moderation of this forum do not address it in public. Send an IM to one of the mods. If you do address it in public the topic will be locked and your comments ignored." Thirdshifter, no offense here.

I'm afrid that this rule will lead to "tyranny" here.
I think, if a moderator can publicly delete/alter someone's message, it is fair enogh if the author of the message can publicly question/protest the action. The moderator should be able to stand behind his/her action, publicly. Let us have a little more freedom of speech here.

Perhaps make it a policy for mods to inform the person who put up the offending post (via e-mail or something), to edit it, delete it, or do something to it in a given period of time, maybe 1 day, or risk being deleted. At least the poster can edit the post and justify his or her position better etc.

If it is just a spammer then he or she probably won't bother anyway. If a random Guest posted, then too bad for him/her.

Well, i think it is time for us to have a more complete(=long n in details?) forum guide and maybe those unsuitable thread should be locked first before being deleted/edited.

However, still, i found nothing wrong to delete ads. or spam directly

As you all know, the member's list and some forums have more than 40 pages. When I would like to search only on a particular page such as 33, i can't directly go to it, but need to start from page 3 and click next all the way to 33.

is it possible to have a kind of 'jump to' selection box as shown below on this screen so that it makes it easier to jump from page to page please?

regards,
tmnt007

here's a suggestion to draw more participation and visibility for recom. why not hold maybe one large project every six months to a year? not just any project, but human projects involving people doing things, pooling resources, meeting together, etc.

it could range from food and clothes collection drive, postcard art projects (send'em from where you are), regional or city meetings/party/gathering (like in nyc, which i've been trying to push for), and other creative and meaningful project which can range from being small and simple to large and global.

right now recom just appears to be just what it is... a forum. of the 2000 members or so, how many are transparent, and how many overly vocal? if we want participation we have to reach out and involve others so that they beget a sense of ownership and will later taste the sweet returns of their contribution - sort of like an IPO. 8)

Based on Recom's experience, people who try to advertise tend to abuse the forum. They'll post something like "join this website and get rich!" kind of thing (deja vu from your Hotmail spam?).
As a result, our forum won't be a discussion anymore, it become some sort of spam.

We could, however, create something like "Classified @<hidden> Recom" or "Ads @<hidden> Recom" where there are all no-nonsense ads being posted on the board and people who're interested come and see the ads.
But we need to make sure that, the ads are for real, it's not something like they made it up, or simply spam.

Please tell us what do you think, and we could always rethink to get the best out of our forums.

I like craigslist. Anarchy, but yet useful coz people don't read things they don't want. They just search for the posting they want.

tmnt007, i'm looking into the paging issue. It's much harder than I thought coz we have to calculate which post to display for each page each time we display them. Do you think we should have a link to every page? Or just a selected few in intervals of 5 or 10 post?

Participation has always been an issue - why aren't people posting????

chenchow
01-09-2004, 04:10 AM
Thanks tmpj007 about the page list. Jiin Joo, I think an interval of 5 pages would be good enough, if that is easier to be done.

One observation I have found is that if the moderator deleted any thread, it seems to screw up the page pointing, like the small little link on the main page, where we go to the latest post. It seems to me that say if we have 61 posts in a reply, 1 was deleted, so 60 left. So, the last message is in page 4, yet the link from there is in page 5.

Personally, I don't know how to solve this and it may be quite complicated to solve too perhaps.. so, just bring it up for everyone's knowledge.

I notice that there are a number of anonymous postings in SIGs. Is there a way to block that? Is anonymous posting allowed in the main forum as well?
