I'd like to know what you think are some of the new areas of research in computing? Everyone knows about artificial intelligence. What are some of the hot new areas of research in the IT world? Luke probably has the insight.

Erm, I'm gonna venture and guess Quantum Computing? But I think before the Comp Sci ppl can work on quantum computers, they have to wait for the physicists to finish the very inexact science of quantum physics first =D
I think everything in computers right now depends on the creation of quantum computers. Even with AI, there's only so much you can do with the limited power of typical computers today. If you noticed, there has been very little significant leaps in terms of real-world computer application compared to the early days when the computer is first invented. Even now they had to squeeze multiple cores onto the same CPU to keep Moore's Law going.
There's also a few-fangled thing called Stream Computing which I read about in Scientific American recently. Basically it's research into manipulating data from a stream (like from a LAN, etc). Sounds promising.
