View Full Version : United World Colleges Scholarship
Read more about it in the Star Education article here (http://thestar.com.my/education/story.asp?file=/2006/2/5/education/13266384) and also a personal account from a current Msian student in UWC here. (http://tinkosong.blogspot.com/2006/01/united-world-colleges.html)
For more information on the IB, there is also the Official IB site (http://www.ibo.org) and article in Tinkosong (http://tinkosong.blogspot.com).
I would be glad to answer any further questions.

Thanks Bert! UWC sounds great... imagine being able to study in Norway!! Are you able to select the college that you want to attend?? And oh btw, is the College of Adriatic (pardon my spelling) for undergrads too, from what I garnered from The Star?
Thanks!

UWC is very good, too bad that it doesn't offer full scholarship last year, only 25 percent...

I believe it is a preparatory college for those intending to do physics.
nalgene87: One would be able to rank the colleges according to his or her preference. But then again, the colleges have their different strengths and you won't really know about them when you apply. Looking back, I am really glad I got sent here even though it wasn't in my top few choices because I really got to experience the outdoors here.
Adriatic conducts the IB too, just that maybe their strength is in music and physics. I'm not too sure about that actually cos I haven't spoken to any Msians who went there cos the last one was 3 or 4 years my senior I think.
Salvation: yea that was a pity, there was some restructuring going on at that time which caused us to lose a few places.
what about the other colleges (their advantages and disadvantages ?)
i'll just talk about my school here. If anyone else really wants to find out about the other schools, PM me and mayb I can try to put you in touch with people from that school.
as for my school, if you wanna do a lot of hiking and outdoor activities, it's an awesome place. the school is really in the middle of nowhere and you can always go hiking behind campus anytime. we have an excellent wilderness program and also a search and rescue team. furthermore, our location in the US means that you will get to experience the local culture and architecture not found in many parts of the US.
In terms of quality of life, we're also the richest of all the colleges and our facilities: computers, dorms etc are of high standards. we also have hot springs on campus! However, if you're a city kid, this place is in the middle of nowhere and there isn't any mall for you to hang out or just chill around at night. The city is 2.5 hours away so no one really gets to go there often. Also, weather here is too dry for a msian used to humidity. The mountain desert climate means a lack of opportunity for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. If you can't live without the sea or a swimming pool, don't come here.

UWC has a need-based financial aid policy if I am not wrong. It depends on how much your family can afford to pay (yep, they want your family to contribute a bit towards your education). If you cant pay any, I think it might limit your chances of entering but if you do get admitted, they will pay the fees for you!

erm nope. i think we're trying to work towards that but at the moment, the msian national committee does not have a need based fin. aid policy.
it all depends on which place you get. the scholarships range from just a spot in one of the schools where one would have to pay full fees to a full scholarship in certain circumstances.
According to an officer from the National Selection Committee :
excerpts from her mail which i received together with the application form (2006) :
SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships offered are for the 2 year study for the IB Programme only.
Scholarships awarded to Malaysia are small ie either 1 or 2 places with 2 - 3 places on partial scholarships ranging between 50% - 75% of the school fees over the 2 years.
For the latter, parents have to provide funds to make up to school fees plus other costs such as travel from KL to the country and during long winter & summer breaks, pocket money especially during holidays, living expenses, visa fees, medical insurance and other incidentals.
Should there be any further enquiries, kindly email me or call the Secretariat's Office.

yea, you would have to provide your own pocket money and travelling expenses like I am doing now. I am on a 75% scholarship but my co-year in canada is getting a full scholarship for tuition(not sure about pocket money).
Hello ....... i have a problem here.
What should we write in
Line 9. If you are applying for a specific scholarship, please name the scholarship. If you aint applying for a specific scholarship, you will be considered for the available scholarship(s) to the colleges of your choice.
Let's say i apply for UWC Hong Kong. What should I write if i want to apply for a scholarship to study there?
What scholarship are you applying for?
Any scholarship available to study there ? I mean scholarships that are provided by UWC colleges worldwide. I.e : UWC Singapore.
if you are looking for scholarships from the colleges themselves, you don't need to state any other scholarships on line 9.
the scholarships you get depends on where you get sent to. in some colleges they give you a full scholarship, in some partial, and in some may be none at all. so you can't really control that. you don't need to apply for a scholarship from a particular uwc.
