I know that in general everyone seems hooked on cool series like Naruto and Bleach. Nothing wrong with that, but I just wonder if anyone else shares the beauty of more serious Animes like Noir, Serial Experiment Lain and Gunslinger Girl. They are thought provoking and although not very action oriented, have awesome storylines coupled with magnificent art!

If you ask me, Gundam SeeD and Destiny can raise a lot of issues too... you really question what's right or wrong under those circumstances... Not to mention the wonderful Mechs you get to see... maybe it's a guy thing, but those huge humanoid robots are just cool...

I'm probably just rambling, but I do wonder if anyone else shares similar interests as I do in terms of taste for Anime. It might be a lot more interesting than the common Naruto/Bleach threads (nothing against them but something different wouldn't be bad no?)

I have all three seasons actually... and I absolutely loved them all... The first was interesting, 2nd season (fumoffu) really funny and the 3rd serious and interesting albeit a little short. The reason I didn't list them here is because they're not really 'serious' animes... if you get my meaning...

I do like all sorts of anime... FMP being one of the ones I love the most... but I'm also attracted to anime's which bring out issues that are far more relevent to life... :P

FMA is cool too, and so is Black Cat... but I think we've deviated from what the original topic was supposed to be...

I was just wondering if anyone had similar interests in serious animes... meaning the tone of the entire anime is not about making you laugh with slapstick comedy or antics, but about important issues, telling a compelling story which provokes thought and may even be dark or gothic. Another good example would be Blood+. That's the kind of serious anime I was kind of focussed on. Granted, these type of animes aren't necessarily good to destress, but I like such serious, provocative anime too...

I hope that cleared things up a little... :)

Hmmm...well, I suppose Hellsing could be considered one, as others have already mentioned. I like mostly the dark and gothic undertones though, in terms of storyline, it's a little short for me heh.

And to a certain extent, I guess Saiyuki too falls under this category (if you can excuse all the humorous parts). Heck...the one reason the plot moves so slow is because each episode takes its time in examining a certain theme or such (though most of the themes that are used are pretty much similar).

Animes like 'Grave of the Fireflies' and 'Kimi ga Nozomu Eien' are really thought-provoking. I have Serial Experiment Lain, but have yet to watch it.

Gundam Seed is a VERY good anime that has action AND issues that raises ethical questions... How far are humans allowed to play God? Simply adore this, highly recommended!

As for Ghost in the Shell... I have watched both Standalone and Innocence twice and I still don't get it :/

haha. I myself don't understand gits:innocence too. When I saw the end where a doll smiles, i have a feeling the animators were laughing at us.

Full Metal Alchemist and Trinity Blood are a few anime's that i found that has 'substance'.

If you like really technical animes, try going through the whole macross(robotech) saga. The amount of detail they provide for each ship in the series is so great its almost real.

I think Neo genesis Evangelion is a great anime, too serious to the extend that i can't understand the storyline, lol!

Anybody tried elfen lied? Its really bloody.. haha![/quote]

Zeroth, I actually chuckled at

"Full Metal Alchemist and Trinity Blood are a few anime's that i found that has 'substance'. "

... because FMA = alchemist = utilizes subtance... or maybe i'm just a huge geek so ignore me.

Elfen Lied is another awesome anime! It's a pity they didn't develop it more... love the gore, man XD.

Oh, their soundtrack is the creme of the crop imho

Oh my god, Elfen Lied! XD I just finished watching that today. So sad...;_; ...but at least it had more or less a happy ending - not one of those 'everyone dies' kinda ending. I think the plot development was all right. If they had made it any longer, they might accidentally make it drag out too much that some episodes could feel unnecessary (seen it happen to quite a number of animes before). But yeah I know what you mean, the usual 'wish there was more' feeling.
