Etymology

I was reading the Lord of the Rings again and as usual that got me to thinking about languages and etymology. For instance, where does the name Dickinson come from? And also I was thinking about the Malay language, and I don't ever remember having seen the etymology of Malay words in Kamus Dewan. It's not really necessary, but it'd be nice to have it just to for those who are interested.

i have a question here, what's the different between linguistic major and etymology? do people make etymology as a major??

my brother has some problem lately, he intended to change his major from engineering to linguistic....now that i discover there's etymology..so can anyone help me with that? Does anybody know which university is good in linguistic major??

hey sze min! etymology is about the origin of words. it's one of the subjects i took before in usm. and i don't think we have a major in that though. but maybe i'm wrong too!

and qedx, i don't think kamus dewan can tell where certain word came from, maybe you should look them up in etymology dictionaries.
