Know the phrase "Yes, but...."?
So instead of saying that, let's play the "Yes, And..." game. It's very easy. Two person have a conversation and one guy (say A) propose something hard to do. The other person (say B) will have to say "But, ...." and complain about why it is not achievable. Then A will have to say, "Yes, what I find valuable in what you just said is ....., And, .......", then switch again, B will have to complain about the new proposal, and switch etc.
Here's an example:
A: "Let's open a restaurant in US and make authentic Rojak! We'll be rich!"
B: "But, this plan won't work because Americans don't like the stinky smell of Rojak"
A: "Yes, what I find valuable in what you just said is that the food industry is very sensitive to taste, and what we can do to solve this problem is to tune the taste such that the Americans will like it, and this willl give us more business."
B: "But, if you tweak the taste of the Rojak, then it won't be authentic anymore. My grandma will disapprove of the taste."
A: "Yes, what I find valuable in what you just said is that authenticity matters as a marketing strategy, and all we have to do is to claim that the American version of Rojak is the authentic Rojak, after a few generations of people eating this new Rojak, they will take this as the Authentic Rojak"
B: "But, this will take forever ...........
and so on and so forth.
Wanna try? Let's make this a forum thing, so you can reply to anyone, just make sure you alternate between "Yes, And" and "But".
If you find the conversation utterly boring, you can introduce a new topic (say: "Let's go sail from Mexico to Alaska", for example) and we'll switch, but give every question the benefit of going through at least 2 rounds or so before switching. Make the topic hard so that everyone can practising arguing while standing in the other person's shoe.
Anyone cares to start?

Let's build a car that can fly, just like in the movie star wars ..
(answering to myself...)
But.. , why do you need a flying car? Just want to be look like you're sometihing from the future? In addition, the cost is just too high to build a car like that. Imagine you have to build a small jet system inside every car.. it cost you thousand of dollars to build such system for the plane, or space shuttle.

Yes, what I find valuable in what you just said is two things, one that we need to justify the reason of building the car, and two, cars need to be cheap. And at the same time, I think having vision into the technology future is an interesting endeavor that humans have been practising all the time. And to drop the cost, all we have to do is to produce more cars and achieve ecmonies of scale!

Yes, we can achieve the economies of scale but in order to achieve it you would need a great lot of manufacturers willing to produce such expensive goods. You would also need people to buy these goods and enough demand to create balance with supply.

But, do we really need flying cars? Flying objects for sure require a whole lot more of energy sources to begin with. A large extra amount of energy is required to maintain elevation. More fuel, more electricity (if we use electromagnetic elevation) People dislike the idea of spending more money for fuel.

Yes, what I found valuable in your argument is that we might be better off to stick with the current mode of transportation, cars, for the average , and plane for the luxury
But, as an analogy, let's take computer. Think of computer in 1960's. It's a behemoth that only a few know how to operate, and , for the average income people (or even students) to own a computer at that time is only a fantasy.
And , just look at how it evolves. intersect with the invention of Internet and viola, it's one of the best piece of technology that ever existed that benefits human race.
Now, with the emergence of personal computer, we now can say goodbye to the old huge computer.
Now, Is it now possible to intersect the idea of having personal jet plane and car, at an affordable price?
A flying car. that is.

But comparing computers and cars is not really 'kena' here ... if the cost that you prioritize, you should think about the cost of operation rather than the cost of attainment. Computers became smaller, thus it uses less electricity. But we are changing cars from earth-bound vehicles to flying machines; the power requirement will sure increase.

Yeah, that was in the 1960s when computers where as large as your bedroom. Then innovation happened and Steve Jobs created smaller systems which people can afford.
Power is not a problem if you can re-use them. There are plenty of solar power and wind, etc..Perhaps they would size-down the cars, with new inventions. Then like the computers, everyone can have them.
Of course, it is not possible to imagine that now, but who would have imagined the World Wide Web back in 1960s?
And if you tell someone in 1800s that you wouldn t need a horse and people would run(jog) for pleasure instead of for their lives, nobody would have believed you back then.

The analogy with fying car with computer , :
small computer use less energy, after the invention of transistor. Transistor allow us to build a small personal computer which performs hundred times faster that the first electronic computer built by researchers at UPenn (ENIAC).
That means, more research to replace the current source of energy
(i.e gas) ?.

Ok, let me clarify again - to play this game you HAVE to answer in this form:
"Yes, what I find valuable in what you just said is _______, And ________" while the other person should answer starting with "But, ____________".
This is very important - please use the two phrase above for your replies.
Ok let me try a new topic:
"Let's make a new law that forces people to only marry people with different skin color, so that in the future, we'll all be the same."
Again, use the phrase: "Yes, what I find valuable in what you just said is _______, And ________" and "But, ____________" only.

Yes, what I found valuable in what you just said is:
we have to follow the rule of the game
BUT
we are still newcomers in this game, so , we are not used to the format. If you give one or two more chance, rather than cutting a good discussion , it would be great.
We can save your discussion about the marriage after we finish with the flying cars, shall we?. those interested in playing the flying cars discussion, please do so with BUT, AND , and a little longer phrase that you have to memorize:
Yes, what I found valuable in what you just said is: ... ne?
---------------continue-----------------------------------------
OK, let's continue with the discussion of flying cars.
BUT, technolgical breakthrough will make it possible to produce a relatively cheap car in the future. In fact, it's a political side , rather than economic side that might influence the usage of gas in the automotive industry as the source of energy to this date.

Yes I did... :) what I find valuable in what you just said is that it is hard to try out a new game when the players don't want to play by the rules.
And since I'm just trying to do a dry run for some of the tools I found recently in order to organize the forum thingy, I guess it is still not too bad. At least people try to follow the rules, and the conversation is such that we try to speak in the shoes of the other person, then this game is still running well..

I don't know if I got it right, but the rules are as follows:
1) The person who replies to any rebuttal has to start with
"Yes, what I find valuable in what you said is..."
2) At no time should this person use the word "but"
3) the person who gives the rebuttal has to start with
"But..."
and to keep the flow going, we have to alternate between rebuttals and replies, even if you think you have a better rebuttal or reply than the last person.
Right?
So, let's start a new game of "And, yes" !!!!!

Yes - bingo! You've got it!
In the real face to face game, the two person will take turns being the "Yes-And" man. The "But" person's role is easy, just try to find faults in what the other person say is almost automatic, arguably even a "Malaysian" thing.
Since we're in the forum setting here, we'll just play whatever role we want, as long as the conversation in this forum follows the alternating Yes-And vs But format.

Yes, what I find valuable in what you said, is that failing to do achieve a goal might lower the moral to continue trying. And after failing, we also have a concrete example of how we failed, and this great example will help us understand why we failed, in order to correct it and do better, thus increasing the moral again.
