Hello cloudie89,
You can only apply for it after you have completed your 11 years of education, that means graduated from f5.Actually there is no quota for the scholarship.Who scores well in the exam(top 15 normally),and does well in the interview will get the scholarship.
Number of student got the scholarship so far;2006-7,2005-3,2004-4,2003-3,2002-3.
asian youth fellowship ,young leader programme are normally for those who already graduated and having working or research experience if i am not mistaken.
Theoretically, you can apply for it just after your SPM,but until then, nobody get the scholarship while he/she is just lower 6 when sitting for the exam.

I sat for the Monbukagakusho scholarship 2006, but I took the English Paper only.

For the Exam, there would be 3 papers, 1st paper English test, which takes 1-1.5 hours (forgot the exact time) & around 40 questions. All the question will test u on english language. So if u want to prepare for it, study TOEFL. There will be comprehension, word substitution (choose the best word to fit in sentence), Sentence correction (choose the best alternative to replace certain words in the sentence) etc. There were no mathematics, or other questions. All questions are objective, A~E.

The other 2 papers are Japanese test. I believe 1 of them is objective, another one is written test. But i'm not sure as i didn't take it.

This year, there are more than 1000 ppl sat for the written examination, out of which, i guess 400 sat for the japanese papers.

You can get the statistics for the successful application for scholarship here
http://www.mlab.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~ylfoo/Monbusho.html

As you can see, the chances for undergraduate (after form 5) is very slim as compared to postgraduate. However, it's worth a try.

does that mean we have to sit for the japanese papers too?? what if we don't know the languagE? does that mean we have to attend japanese classes before sitting the exam??
