core 2 duo for laptops are formally known under the codename merom...
according to the sources that i have, it's already out in the open, but availability will be low for now... look out for mass numbers of it in approx nov or before it...

Well, as far as I know, there's already a Core 2 Duo powerstation by Dell in our market. No information on normal PC and notebook but I believe the wait shouldn't be too long. Intel Malaysia's currently having a contest for Core 2 Duo which will end this September and the prizes promised are PCs equipped with Core 2 Duo. Just my conjecture though.

The reason is that the Core 2 Duo is a scarce commodity right now. Why? Because Intel doesnt seems to be able to ramp it in volume. Rumour has that the supply will remain thight till end of this year.

their fabs haven't been upgraded enough to produce core 2 duo processors...so yes, more availability can be expected during the holiday season end of this year...

Starting today, Dell Malaysia should have Core 2 Duo avaliable for selected laptop models. Not sure about the rest.

core duo isn't that bad anyway... it just lacks the 64 bit support, but will run any of your games well... =)

Call back next week.

yes...
I've noticed that acer's merom laptop is out as well.
quite cheap... rm4199 for dell m1210...
i wonder if my dad is going to buy it for me or not....

Thought M1210 would be light. It's pretty heavy... =P
Anyway, it's still quite portable though I think the battery doesn't last long enough, only 3 hours.
Overall, quite good la... a few people around me swoon over it cos it looks really cool and sleek with the black casing.
Had some bad experience with my first unit, though, got some electric shock from it (terrifying....), called up Dell and got a replacement. So prob settled.

hmm...for those of you who have dell based notobooks, better check up on their website to chack if your battery needs to be replaced. There is a massive recall now about their battery might cause fire and they are doin a massive recall of it now...

Yeap, Dell notebook users better check the battery.
Anyway, those who have just recently bought their notebook need not worry. :D

More powerful and cheaper but I heard it generates a lot of heat ler.....

that's relative... my laptop based on centrino dothan also produces a lot of heat that it can't be called laptop anymore...
it depends on the manufacturer to implement efficient cooling systems for a laptop, or in this case, mobile devices...

True also...
My laptop gets very hot most of the time. I called up Dell but they said was that all new models are like that, blah... so they can't help. :?

Ever heard of undervolting (http://www.notebookforums.com/thread70943.html)?
I do that on my pentium M Laptop. cools it down. does not work for C2D yet though..

Cheaper, but not necessarily more powerful.

A computer's performance is ultimately limited by bus speed, L2 cache size, graphics card performance, memory speed, memory latency and hard drive speed. A fast CPU isn't exactly everything.
Right nowAMD is phasing out all the 1MB cache processors in favour of the 512KB ones. This will hurt AMD in the long run.

not really...you had jus quoted one benchmark out of many many out there..and it doesn't even contain AMD turion proceessors
AMD turion have their own advantages... and their intergrated memory controller makes high amount of L2 cache unnecessary. In fact, i had seen tests that makes 1MB cache have negligable advantage against the 512 kb cache versions...

You are right, this is one benchmark, but it is only right to compare core 2 duo with AMD X2 processors. comparing it against a single core 64 bit turion processor would be unfair. My Banias laptop easily trashed my roomate's Turion laptop, but only because of the OS limitations. I can pull up a whole bunch of benchmarks that proves that the Core arechitechture is more superior if that is what you want, but i see not point in that. You can see it youserlf at Anandtech.com or tomshardware. Hypertransport can only do so much. Without OS that supports 64 bit computing, your 64 bit processor is pretty "castrated".
AMD is definitely cheaper, but we will see. Hopefully with the new merger with ATI, we can get a better chipset/cpu match.

nope, there are double core turions in the market now. and yes, core 2 duo processors are kings of the hill now. i am just giving an example of a viable and more value for money system than intel, since most of us are stuck with the name intel centrino, that alternatives simply don't even exist.

I see, they released it faster than i thought..Hrm...interesting...I used to be an AMD fan but heat problems and chipset compatibility problems changed my mind. Now i use mostly intel, particularly since i usually underclock my processors to keep the heat down.
AMD X2 maybe cheaper, but not necessarily "better". As I have said, there are other hardware factors that may affect the performance of a computer. Remember, you get what you pay for.
For those who are interested, here is an article to a benchmark of Turion X2 vs the Pentium D (http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?id=1904&cid=2&pg=6). Note that the Pentium D architecture is put to shame by the Core architecture in the Anandtech benchmark.
Which one is better? I'll let you be the judge.

cant blame it on intel for releasing pentium D
they are only doing it to reduce losing the market to amd...
they were planning to jump directly from pentium to core... but the time is not with their side...
so they had to release pentium D in the mean time to compete with amd

most laptop are using intel core 2 duo, it is more prestigious
here is the comparision between both of this processors:
