You cannot get into medicine directly in NZ. Only 2 universities in NZ offer medicine - University of Auckland and University of Otago.
First, you'll need to do the first year of Health Science. In Auckland, you'll also have the option of doing the first year of a BSc (specialising in Biomed Science). Entrance is very competitive based on grades (think high 80-90% averages) and the UMAT test. Auckland also conducts an interview.
Note that it might be even more competitive for international students cos there is a quota. On paper it doesn't look bad but keep in mind that students on govt scholarship fill up most of that quota. They get priority. The remainder is left for private fee-paying international students to fight it out.

hmm, im not in auckland right now, im in Otago Uni, Dunedin (incidentally its bloody freezing here - and its not even midwinter yet!), doing First Year Health Sci - me and another 1500 ppl trying to get into med
From the seniors -
about 190 places for undergrads (total)
set quota (40? 60?) for Maori - Bumiputera equivalent - but if there are not enough with the minimum (70% in all papers, NOT average), these places go to general undergrads
10-20 for "rural students" - if youre from rural NZ and say u wanna go back to practice in a rural area.
10-30 places reserved for "arrangements with other governments" eg JPA, Brunei scholarships
Getting into the Auckland or Otago , especially if you are under JPA, shouldnt be a problem - the admissions ppl are quite flexible. Plus, their NCEA (form 7, kinda like our form 6) system here is even lousier than the easiest ALevels courses -one of the chem lecturers was telling us the other day that the year NCEA started, that batch of students dropped the chem passing rate by 10% from 85% to 75%... and the passing rate remains until now (3 years?)
Repeat, no direct entry into Medicine for both Otago and Auckland - everyone needs to do either First Year Health Science or Postgraduate Entry (do a undergrad degree first, and try to get into Med - theres 40 places or so if you choose this route)
For Otago - these courses need First Year Health Sci -
Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Medical Labaratory Science
methinks its similiar for auckland - but check with somone else
*all numbers are for Otago... and may not be entirely accurate cuz this is hearsay
if i am not wrong, auckland uni does not accept international students into their pharmacy programme.
and yes, it's around 200-350 malaysian students in auckland.

Enter the University itself, no, not that i know for.
After that (during Health Science first year):-
Medicine:
"Selection into Medicine is determined by a combination of a students GPA in the HSFY course (2/3 weighting) and their UMAT score (1/3 weighting)"
Dentistry:
".. requires students to pass all HSFY with a B(70%) GPA or better, with no paper less than a B-. Having achieved the academic threshold, selection is based on performance in UMAT, and and interview/oral assessment"
Pharmacy:
"..admission to 2nd year classes in pharmacy is competitive and selection is based upon the grades achieved in the HSFY course"

dont look at me for JPA ... im under FAMO (father and mother) "scholarship" =P
anyway- English requirements - for University of Otago:
* IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0)
* Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 (TWE 4.5)
* Internet-based TOEFL of 80 with a writing score of 20
* Computer-based TOEFL of 213 (Essay Rating, 4.5)
* Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) - grade B
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - grade C
* GCE 'A' Level General Paper (English) - grade C or higher
* APIEL (Advanced Placement International English Language) Examination - grade 3
* International Baccalaureate - no evidence of proficiency needed if programme taught in English
In addition, all HSFY students has a compulsary English diagnostic test during the orientation/course approval period. 2 chances to sit the test, if you fail the first one, the next is in May/June, if you fail again they ask you to take an additional English paper in the 2nd semester (but there are rumours that this disqualifies you from professional courses esp med)
yeah, thats right, no interview for pharm.

How about student under moe scholarship? Is there a lot of them studying in Auckland? So do the malaysian students often hang around with each other?

malaysian students generally stick together... but it also depends on which residential hall you get into (assuming ur staying in a hall) and what course ur taking..
um.. eg, i have 3 "groups" of friends here,
1. the HSFY group at my hall
2. malaysians in HSFY + phychology (since we share papers)
3. the postgrad/internationals from my hall.....

there are quite a number of students doing tesl / science under the MoE scholarship
well, my three current flatties are under moe's sponsorship
malaysian students do hang out with each other most of the time, esp those who stay nearby each other or studyin the same course in uni
there are malaysian students clubs in almost every uni in nz
http://umsanz.com is for the auckland's malaysian students club

the first sem of first year is often a repeat of A-level materials, partly because the local students' year 13 NCEA3 (their equivalent of highschool leaver qualification) is not as rigorous as A-levels. Possibly in between SPm/STPM level. don't worry, it ll get more challenging! (unless you're super brainy). :D
canty has mostly engineers, so I am not surprised if health-science guys like yourself don't know us....

For a list of halls (the uni officially changed all names to "College" in 2006), see
http://www.otago.ac.nz/about/accommodation/residentialcolleges.html.
Each hall/college has it's own culture and reputation, from super-nerdy St Margaret's to party Unicol.
Eve88 - what hall do you live in?

Arana. Big plus - near the uni. 3mins walk to lectures only. but the food is so-so.
formerly Abbey - the postgraduate college (temporary since they couldnt offer a "normal" one... Abbey is cool!! hotel standard rooms, ensuite bathrooms + buffet-ish style dining)
Druid: and you are..?

Arana... are you in one of those new rooms?
Me? Graduated 1 1/2 years ago. Stayed in Unicol, but food also so-so. Biggest plus was location. Most of my lectures were in Archway, it took longer to get to my room from Unicol's entrance than to walk from the entrance to my room.
Then went flatting and back to Unicol again as an RA.

nawp, im in one of the flats - white house.
they tend to put "proper" 17-18 year old first years in the floors/main buildings and the "older" ppl (took a gap year / a levels / postgraduate /non-first years) in the flats.
so its nice and quiet for me...
even tho my social life is not as happening as the ppl in the main buildings.
