WEll, i think it's odd as i'm part of the medical system, however, may be it's good to think about, can doctor be trusted, may be totally or not all?
i'll share with u all later.
Just think about:
1. When u are told that u have terminal illness, how would u response?
2. When u are asked to give consent for operation which may endanger your life, how would u make up your mind?
3. Will u look for information or other resource besides doctor about your illness?

I wouldn't trust any self-proclaimed doctors or non-main streamed medical doctors ie acupunturist, holistic doctor, homeopathy expert, crystal energy, chiropractic doctor, chi gung master.

Personally, i would accept the resources given by the doctor, but I would definitely try to look into some of the resources myself.

I would suggest that we had one or two doctors that we stick to and really trust of. So, we can always go to that family doctor to ask for opinion or advice on any advice that we had gotten from other specialists. Having a specific doctor that we had known of for a long term, would give us more confidence in the doctor and know that the doctor can be trusted upon to give good advice.

We can always look for health care information from internet or health care magazine. Doctors do not necessarily know all these as they have no time to absorb all the latest health care tips such as how to detox yourself in a week

However, the main job of a Medical Doctor is to diagnose what is actually goes wrong in the patients, and you can't get these from elsewhere.

To avoid false diagnosis on serious disease such as cancer or heart disease, a second diagnosis is always recommmended from different source.

well, it's correct that Dr's job is to Diagnose and the treatment is comparatively easier(anyone can do it if u follow guide line when diagnosis is clear, hehe...). however, in m'sia it's still very dependent on Dr to do everything(Diagnosis, Treatment, remember the Drug-drug interaction, social care etc....) as we still lack of good support system now. Even doctor can't know everything, for example, i've never learnt that Dermal Patch which can 'cure' Diabetic mellitus is available( news from S'pore'), because it's not in the text book and personally, i won't recommend on that as we emphasise on Eveidence Based Medicine.

True story.........doctors may misdiagnose and manage patients carelessly sometimes(or even most of the time depend on which doctor u meet), especially those who stay in rural area, they can't even have a qualified doctor to treat but treated by Medical attendant, and we, medical students found that sometimes they really treat wrongly and we feel sad about it....

Yar...the health care system in M'sia is really poor relatively to first world country. Anyway, with the increasing of health conscious M'sian in the society and the increasing of medical field graduates, it is not a dream to have an advance health care system in Malaysia.

I would like to think I can trust my Doctor, and when I am a doctor i would like my patients to trust me.

Patients trust their doctor based on the relationship. In no other profession is trust more important.

The Dr-Pt relationship solely depends on it. A patient tells a little, the Dr listens and responds. The patient thinks "Yes, this is someone here who is truely concerned about my wellbeing", and tells a bit more. The doctor gets a better picture of what's happening and can help the patient more. The patient benefits. The doctor benefits and society benefits. Tests, investigations and treatment are not needlessly utillized.

If the relationship goes sour by "lying", breaking confidence, etc... trust goes out the window. Patients tell less, or possibly even lie, and the doctor can't figure out what's wrong with the limited information supplied. Patient remains ill, doctor's work piles as more patients do not get better, more tests are done.....more resources wasted. Everyone looses.

Have trust in your doctor. Be a trustworthy doctor. Then will healthcare work.

I am wondering what is the role of white lies between the doctor and the patient or the doctor and the patient's family members. Being truthful will lead to greater trust and stronger rapport between the dr &pt. However, terminally ill patient may not be acting in the rational way that we would expect of normal human being because they are pushed into the corner of accepting hard facts that they might not be willing to accept.

Another damn relative issue...

YOU MUST TRUST YOUR DOCTOR. The doctor-patient relationship is a 2-way street. If the doctor wants to help you, you should help him/her too!!!

As today's medical training shift towards a more 'patient-friendly' model (I'll spare the details), we should be able to see better doctors who are comfortable in giving patients more empathy and care. I hope...

It is true that there are misdiagnosis and negligence cases. But please look how many lives we saved or how many illnesses have we cured...We are not perfect but we strive for it.

BTW, depends also on your motivation to be a doctor in the first place
