My brother intends to quit his study in MMU(Multimedia University) in Malaysia and wanted to apply for colleges or universities in US. His major right now in MMU is Telecommunication Engineering, and he is studying his second year now. Recently, he find that his interest is actually Linguistic but not engineering.

As his sister, although I am studying in US, I have totally no idea what Linguistic major is.(well, i started to know a little bit now as I have been searching for this major lately) Also, I have no idea which university in US is best of linguistic.(this is the main question) I have been trying to find some information over the internet, but there is not much help.

May I know if there is any Linguistic major ReComers here? Or, can anybody help me with that? Your help is very much appreciated!!! :)

im only a TESL student but dis sem we have ta study linguistics. we're now studying non verbal communication n b4 that we had 'sounds of language' (phonology) where we learned phonetics and stuff.although we havent learned the hard stuff (the ones with the weird names like :? morphology, syntax and semantics) but i think its an interesting subject (plus we have a really cool lecturer :D ). But i guess majoring in it'll be diff but hey wish ur bro all the best

my the other question is, can he transfer his engineering subjects to the colleges here in US?

I think this would actually depend on the college he's planning to enrol in, whether they recognize his old university and also on the requirements of his major.

Since he is planning to switch to arts and sciences, I doubt that many of his courses will be transfered. Probably just core courses like math and physics and if they have science requirements, then he could probably pass on one or two more courses.

I think TESL is very different from Linguistics. I took a Linguistic class before. Based on my understanding, linguistic learn about the structure and history of the language while TESL courses deal with how to apply the language. Here's the link to Linguistic department in my university. It may help you get a brief idea on what Linguistic is all about.

or combine both ?

just a story that might inspire your brother,

last semester, I attended a talk about speech recognition.
basically, researchers at USC now are studying speech recognition.
the goal is to intepret/analyze using digital device,
the state we are in,
based on how we speak (anger, frustation, happines, etc) so appropriate action can be taken.

today, that Indian guy who does the research (with his other partner) was in the news. (MSNBC)
More news :

More about the research :

so, now, maybe you can tell your brother,
hey, combine those 2 (engineering + linguistic ) skills and see what happen. Pretty cool stuff.
