Welcome back! :) Back in Germany?
I never had a good answer to this question: how do you measure EQ? Is there a numeric scale that's comparable between human beings? Much like IQ points (100 normal, 180 genious etc.)
I also recall a study that we went over in class some years back about correlations between different attributes of people and their work performance. It is a study done over 5000 random sample cutting across industries in the US, the methods of which they were recruited and following their job performance for 14 years.
And contradicting to the popular modern preachings to develop high EQ, it seems that people with high IQ were the ones that were usually the best employees. It wasn't exactly IQ, but rational thinking (something like what you get in the analytic part in your GRE if you have taken one before) that is the key to a good employee. Some companies took this to heart and only hire "smart people". Can there be any rational behind this?

I think the combination of IQ and EQ and possibly SQ and other Qs to be a balanced people. Quoting our Falsafah Pendidikan Negara, it is to create citizen with Jasmani, Emosi, Rohani and Intelek (Physical, Emotional, how to translate rohani?, Intellectual). And Intellectual ranks last in it, but seems that everyone in the society seems to over emphasize Intellectual Quotient...
Jiin Joo, have to beg to differ with you. I don't agree that IQ 180 is genius. Perhaps IQ is a measurement how people think and perhaps it could be linked back to rational thinking that Jiin Joo is saying.
We need everyone to be a balanced people and it is hard to find people who are balanced. Hopefully we in ReCom, can find some ReComers who are good in at least all four of those aspects!

i think both IQ and EQ are important in working but EQ is more important than IQ. Having a high IQ means you can do a given task well and having a good EQ means you know how to do a task with the right way at the right time.
a person with high IQ but cannot cope with the stress and cannot get along well with other people and work in a group is no better than a person with average IQ but pretty high EQ who knows how to handle different stressful situation and work efficiently with others.
if you only have high IQ but very low EQ, you won't be able to do great in working place especially in the corporate world. of course, doing research in the lab with just one or two assistants is different story as you only need to come out with some great idea without dealing much with other people.

According to Howard Gardner, an influential Harvard theorist: ?Basically, your EQ is the level of your ability to understand other people, what motivates them and how to work cooperatively with them,?
Psychologists have generally agreed that, among the ingredients for success, IQ counts for only about 10% and the rest depends on everything else?including EQ. A Harvard study of its graduates has also revealed that there is little or no correlation between IQ indicators (such as entrance exam scores) and subsequent career success.
While IQ is thought to be 40% to 80% hereditary (various studies disagree as to the level), EQ is regarded as virtually totally learnable.

anyway, yeah I agree with all of you guys ... IQ with no EQ does not help much especially in this era of globalisation and world-level competitions ... I cringe whenever I watch in TV those guys in neckties running around with briefcase, being scolding by bosses etc etc -- realizing I might be one of them one day ...

spritual?
Anyway, how does one measure EQ? If EQ is a measurement of how well we react to stress and how well we use the knowledge that we have, doesn't this mean that a pre-requisite is that we all agree on the proper with dealing with people? Is there such a way rite now?

5 basic emotional and social competencies (by Daniel Goleman):
Self-awareness :
Knowing what we are feeling in the moment, and using those preferences to guide our decision making; having a realistic assessment of our own abilities and a well-grounded sense of self-confidence
Self-regulation :
Handling our emotions so that they facilitate rather than interfere with the task at hand; being conscientious and delaying gratification to pursue goals; recovering well from emotional distress
Motivation :
Using our deepest preferences to move and guide us toward our goals, to help us take initiative and strive to improve, and to persevere in the face of setbacks and frustrations
Empathy :
Sensing what people are feeling, being able to take their perspective, and cultivating rapport and attunement with a broad diversity of people.
Social Skills :
Handling emotions in relationships well and accurately reading social situations and networks; interacting smoothly; using these skills to persuade and lead, negotiate and settle disputes, for cooperation and teamwork.

Very well, I've read all similar "studies" etc. on EQ and it's importance. Firstly let me clarify that I myself place a large part of my own self-learning process on EQ development, because I think it helps more than one person at any one time if you know more about how to behave in a socially inviting manner.
Actually, I suggested the opposite side of the picture to spark a discussion, brainstrom session, not another advertisement of EQ. Statistics aside, especially if you have working experiences, what do you find valuable in these qualities? Let not dismiss the fact that everything (IQ, EQ, SQ, WDUQ) is important, i.e. you "should" have these qualities or at least you "should" try to learn it. But what is your experience? Is it necessarily the case that a smart person who can't interact well with his or her boss makes the company loses money? On the other hand, does it mean that a emotionally sharp person in the office will be able to bring joy to the workplace and increase productivity? Can you relate some particular incident that you experienced?

Oh btw, I just want to totally reaffirm everyone that results have entirely no correlation with future success, except one caveat, it will affect you when you're trying to get your first job, especially when you have no working experience. I heard rumors that 7 years ago during the .com bubble, oracle and microsoft have been putting resumes in the dumpster if it doesn't say 4.0 on it. Do you believe it?

According to Howard Gardner, an influential Harvard theorist: “Basically, your EQ is the level of your ability to understand other people, what motivates them and how to work cooperatively with them,”
I think EQ has something to do with Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory. His studies show that we all have differerent abilities and that each one of us is more 'gifted' in one way than others. So don't fret if you can't do Math, probably you just don't have the Logical/Mathematical Intelligence. But you might be good in playing musical instruments if you have the Musical Intelligence.
One of the eight human intelligences discovered by Gardner is the Interpersonal Intelligence-which is rather similar to EQ.
Check out this site to find out what the 8 Intelligences are (and in which category you fall into) :
