I am doing A-level and IELTS now, do i still have to sit for Sat 1 or/and Sat 2 ,TOEFL when I apply for Universities in US ? I started my A-level in Jan 2011, What timing should I take the exams ? Can I handle the exam only with my preparation in A-level ? Thanks in advance.

Generally, the colleges do require SAT even though you're taking a levels. The timing depends on when you are applying to the universities. Ivy leagues uni and other similar type have their application due on the end of December. So, it's advisable to finish the exam by a month or two before that so that you can retake it one final time if your score are not good.

With a-level, the SAT II should be a cinched because it's slightly above SPM but below a-level standards. For the SAT I though, I would recommend you to prepare for it. You need to get used to the format and the english used.

Thank you very much for your kind advise.

I wonder do the 1st/earlier result(either worse or better than the final result) affect the chances to apply for U ?

SAT is required which mean SAT 1 or SAT 2 or both ?

Can IELTS replace TOEFL ?

Generally unis look at the highest score in each component. So, if you get 800 in CR on one sitting and say 750 on another, they will consider that you have scored 800 for CR.

If you are applying to more competitive schools, SAT 2 is required. You need to check on each uni's website.

At some university, IELTS is acccepted, while others do not. You need to check with individual university. I suggest you to take TOEFL, because you will need it for at least 1 uni, assuming that you are applying to more than 5 unis. Some reject international students who do now have TOEFL score. Sometimes, TOEFL can be waived, and sometimes not, depending on each uni. If you have scored certain score in SAT CR, then it can be waived.

if your first language is English, then TOEFL can also be waived.

How should we verify our first language as English ?

There is no need to. BUT I suggest when you are applying, you should email the admissions committee to request TOEFL to be waived (this assuming your CR for SAT is not high enough). In that email just explain that your first language is English and you can say stuff like the medium of instruction your college uses is English. :)

As far as I remember, we can't.

They usually judge your first language by geographical location. (i.e. Singaporeans will have their first language as English, while people from the PRC will have theirs as Mandarin.) Some more lenient colleges will say that they will waive the English testing requirements if you have been educated (for 4 years or more) in an institution in which the language medium is English.

You don't need to. In fact, for IELTS it doesn't matter whether your first language is English or not. This information is only used for your certificate.

Only a handful of US universities do not require standardized testing.. I would suggest you take the SAT 1/SAT 2 or ACT and TOEFL.

There is an Opportunity Grant Award by MACEE that sponsors everything including your application fees and standardized testing fees. Check it out.
