Mmm..the supernatural thingy, ghostly stuffs, spiritual thingy seem to be the dominant across Asia....well, as long as one is clear to his/her conscience, I think there's nothing to scare about....

hahahaha that's damn weird ..

uh, suddenly I remember I also have some weird fears ... one of them: as soon as I switch off the the light b4 going to sleep, I'll immediately jump onto my bed .. the reason? I have this "there's-a-monster-under-my-bed" feeling ... of course intellectually I know it's not true but still ... *sigh* ... I guess it's one of those persistent childhood legacies ..

I think sometimes, we feel scared not because we believe or think there are ghosts or spirits around, awaiting to pound on your back...

but rather... it's just that eerie and ghastly feeling we subconsiously get that makes us lose our nerves... for example, if you were to enter an old empty building late at night, the air is cold and the wooden floor squeeking... doesn't that just sends shiver down your spine? Hahaha... I was in that situation last Thurs and I just dashed my way to the comp. lab I was heading to...dying to get out of the freaky environment. Funny thing is, I wasn't afraid of ghosts or spirits... I just got scared because of the spookiness!!

Maybe because when it's dark, our body sends alarm to other sensories to be more attentive, cos you lose the power of sight. But now that we are accustomed to the ghost stories that we hear everyday, we associate the body change with spooky-hantu-behind-your-back kinda thing. :?

This is pure theory.

Thailand: Heights; cockroaches; dental surgery

I found this different from other countries.
can anyone who has being to Thailand explain this?
or they have watched too much of the movie "the dentist"?[/b]

You know, I've always reckoned it to be so. Also, when you consciously involve your lesser-evolved senses (everyone has their favourite over-relied on senses, for me that's sight and sound), everything freaks you out. Training my peripheral vision and hearing for very soft noises, for example, now gets me freaked out because I see more than I'm used to. Moving reflections are a big freak-outer :P

We Asians fear the supernatural as much as we are interested in them. It's part of our culture! The best thing is, our Asian ghosts are much, much scarier than the Mat Salleh ones. I have achluphobia - fear of the dark. (Hope I spelled it right ) I don't know...sometimes things just tend to take weird forms in the dark...

 one thng that i still don't like to look at at night, is the top of my locker. Coz back in school they said there's this old lady who sits on top of lockers and swings her legs like a pendulum (that's why we call her the "makcik biore pore-pack coz the ad has a girl who sits like that n swings her legs juz like dat). She does nothing but observes the students from her perch, and sometimes even calls out to em esp the still nt sleeping ones..Nvr seen her..but i don't like the sound of her LOL

Hmm...Until now, i still don't like that... :?

Although we shouldn't be afraid too much, we're just afraid we might see something ghastly or that it might hurt us. It is possible to deaden yourself to these things, but at what cost?

:?: Think of it this way: if we live our lives rightly, where if we were watched we could not be reprimanded, whatever else that watches (that we cannot see) shouldn't be able to. I'm sure there's something flawed in what I'm saying, but it seems appropriate right now.

Do you mean to say that watching tv is the main thing that contributes to our fear of the supernatural?

i think more like we love to watch shows that scare us to death (like Ju On, The Eye)..then we start to think about the unseen things and frighten ourselves..

People often take interest in things which are challenging horrow shows are one of them. asians especially take horror for entertainment. that's why many horror flicks sell and people throng theme parks with adrenaline-pumping rides.

people, i think you're all over-analyzing this issue...that "survey" was done by a TV channel...clearly it was meant to be light-hearted...

I actually welcome the tangential discussions... which are, after all not unrelated. :) One person's fear, while it may be of the same thing, may be totally different from another's.
